Are wind knots interrupting your fishing day?
If you are fishing in windy conditions, or even if you're not, chances are you've had a wind knot or two (or ten).
We've tested out the best braided line on the market right now and in this video, we break down the science behind the braid, pros and cons of each brand, and if line color really matters.
We also discuss breaking strength (knots), casting distance, if Luke's hair is tougher than 10# braid, 8 strand vs. 4 strand, and why sometimes it's best to stick with what works for you.
But it's true: not all braid is created equal.
If you want to know which braided fishing lines have proven best for inshore saltwater fishing, even on windy days, tune in!
So what's your go-to braided line for any condition?
Let me know in the comments!

Just tried 20 lb J-braid Grand (Gray Light), and so far it's been A-mazing!! Smooth casts, amazing sensitivity, and awesome hook setting!! Will be spooling all my higher end spinning rods with this exact braid and color. I had it straight braid with no leader and caught three large mouth back to back!! They must not see this color. Love it!!

Have about 90% of my rods spooled with suffix 832. All my fresh water have 10 to 20lb on them and salt water rods from 20 to 50lb. Have freshwater rods that the line has been on there up to five years and have never had a break off or wind not. I fish the Great Lakes three to four days a week and 832 has been exceptional. I do like to test other lines (hence 10%). Used PP original with no complaints but Sufix 832 hasn’t ever let me down. Also use Yo Zuri and have had no issues. Under 40lb is four strand and above goes to eight strand. Only get to fish Florida three or four times a year and sufix has been my go to for many years. Great site and knowledge and keeps me up to date. 👍🏽

J braid grand is great to start with, I used it last year and it doesn't last with saltwater use. After a couple of months fishing it would become very weak and would constantly break it is floored not sure if it is sunlight and saltwater or what is. Sufix 131 it's the best braid I have ever used it doesn't seem to age.

Knots are easier to tie on the Reaction and it is a bit quieter going through the line guide . Power Pro original loses color after a while . I get less backslashes on the Power Pro .

yeah. spiderwire was the first. 90's. and i believe it was 45c/yd. so very expensive considering the year and common popular mono's at the time were $2-3 for a roll. I know people in the shipping industry and I remember them talking about how spectra lines on escort tugs were revolutionizing shipping. They were getting lines in the millions of lbs breaking strength that were a fraction of the diameter of traditional lines. And anyone following the offroad driving hobby knows that braided lines have taken over for their winch lines.

Hey there,… braided line has been around longer than you think,… I’m 62 years old … it’s been around before I was born… and it was called squidding line then… for whatever reason.. I don’t know …. Whatever product you buy ,… there’s going to be a downside to any and all … but if you can’t tie a good knot…. then it doesn’t matter how good your line is…. 🤗 BTW… Spiderwire has been used for cutting out windshields without damaging any part of the vehicle for quite sometime as well…..

I have a few that have color match braid and now im loving the camo spiderwire. The majority have powerpro but my new jig setup has the Japan pe line an its held up well. Im curious as I get more into the longevity is that coating and color lock. PP still has the best to me in regards to not bleeding on the reel it just fades. Love these talks its nice to see how it works for others in different situations.

I have two reels spooled with the J- Braid grand. I have 40 pound on a 6000 clash and 15 pound on a shimano spheros inshore 3000. I have lost about a third of my spool on the 6000 due to numerous wind knots in different conditions. I haven’t thrown one after I lost the line so maybe it has something to do with the amount of line on the spool. I have thrown a couple on the 3000 but nothing I would blame on it being inferior line. It’s a toss up but I think I will stick with original power pro. The frustration and uncertainty just isn’t worth it. Keep up the great work guys I love these type of videos.

Power pro was bougjt by Shimano, still manufactured by inov textiles under the direct of Shimano. I only like 2 braided lines power pro 8 super slick v2 blue and kastKing Super Power X8 blue and blue camo. Kastking braid is cheaper, i cant tell any difference except I've had a little bit of color transfer onto my hands when wet in the beginning. Id get either. The only thing I dont like about braid is that it doeant last quite as long. I used to use monofilament line for the life of the reel and I cant do that with braid. Which power pro do you use? Always 8 braid over 4 for longer casts?

I noticed over spooling can create wind knots. Especially on Shimano. If it says 150 yards of 10lb braid. Then stick to 150 yards. Shimano tests these things for a reason. I’ve put so many different lines and it boils down to that.

@justinszuch6184
@justinszuch6184 3 жыл бұрын
@@wills2397 The diameter seems to be right. Comparing 10lb to 15 lb isn't a great comparison on casting distance. 15 to 15 x9 outperforms. When you get to x9 30 compared to Pp 20 is when it truly. starts making a difference X9 30 is thinner then PP 20, When surf fishing the extra line of higher poundage helps.

Luke, do you compare the diameters of the lines when you're testing breaking strength? Line companies often under-state the line rating and say that they have the strongest 10-pound test line when it breaks at 15. They can legally get away with that because the lines are not IGFA tournament rated. If you're an old Ande Tournament user like I was, if the line breaks at 10, it's 10-pound test, but if it breaks at 15, it's 15-pound test. Tournament-rated lines break at or slightly below the stated rating. Comparison of line diameters with many lines might reveal that the greater diameter line might break at a higher pound rating. This is an excellent discussion. Oh, back in the late 80's and early 90's I was field-testing braided lines for several companies. A local line was Raptor. Berkley had several lines in testing. Some lines that came to market first actually sawed through guides and tip tops. I am aware of two of those lines, and if you'd like to know what they are, I'll tell you if you DM me, but it's not for public knowledge.

Hitena goes up to 16 (granted on lines over +14lbs, i htin the others are 12 ) and it's insanely expensive, more expensive than Tatsu. Found them at a fishing show in the north east. Cool stuff but, only for situations where you main line could never impact any structure and it comes in maximum 300yard spools at a mere smidge over $90 a spool and since it's supposedly thinner than maxcuatro that is going to go very fast on almost every reel. Trying to be informative, but nanofil isn't really braid, closer to a fusion line. Beyond braid is just a solution dyed fiber which I guess is kind of unique, I guess, but like carpets doesn't really mean anything depending on how you use it and the other properties it has (yes I saw the tests). Googan is supposedly made by Sunline a reputable Japanese brand, though there isn't data that it is the "same line" as Sunline sells. I think the braid test methodology you utilize is better than anything else out there, though for the most part is slightly confirms my suspicions. Then, I have mainly used power pro and other lines like suffix 832 so like most people stick with the reputable lines, tie good not's, don't overset drag and catch fish.

I’ve found J-Braid cast farther than any other braid. However, wind knots for anything under 30lbs is wind knot city. Very frustrating! Additionally, it gets damaged easily and has low abrasion durability. Moreover, it’s doubly horrible on a bait caster unless using 40lbs or higher.

Any thoughts on the Soft Steel line - it's on super dooper closeout - I bought a bunch and seems to feel the equivalent of the likes of powerpro v2 or jbraid 8 (I have x8 and x8grand) diameter and smoothness. I have not spooled or fished any of it as yet.
@L0st-n0found
@L0st-n0found 3 жыл бұрын
As far as too thin - and different ratings - really should primarily go w/ diameter. Seen some ratings saying oh Fins is stronger than any other 20lb exept the 832 was close (limited competitions) BUT it's also the diameter of THIRTY lbs test in everything else. So if you test the 30lb in everything else how do they stack up against the FINS 20.. It's a little insane. If something is almost too thin - well go up in diameter Never seen Seaguar tournament braid but unless you need a certified line then if you use 10lb powerpro of Jbraid then maybe go with 6 or 8 of the super thin line or if 30lb powerpro - go 20 of the super thin. If they are equivalent diameter then that is what you need to quantify how good they are in comparison. It's also very noticeable in the likes of Mono - like Berkley Big Game people tout how strong it is in a given weight - but it's also 1.5 or 2x (off the top of my head possible exaggeration - but it's like that it's insane how thick it is compared to many others in same weight - no duh should it be stronger in a lbs test if, say, it's 20lb diameter of 40 in most others)

Oh good your talking about the 50lb braid for bass now it’s harder to cut through vegetation with thicker line they used to flip with 20lb mono now we need 60 lb braid ok I’ll stick to 20 and I bet I can wench a 18 lb out of vegetation

Spool shape matters a lot for wind knots. And how the reel retrieves on he spool. Most reels come with shims to adjust how it retrieves line. If its not correct, the line will slip out from under itself on the cast and the loops cause knots. The "casting shape" of the spool also matters. I buy braid on bulk and use a machine to spool it on. Ive had one reel give me zero problems and another reel nothing but knots. Wind knots is the wrong term. Like sand fleas. But everyone knows the terms. If the braid is spooled loose it can knot. With coils coming out not in order on the cast. Color doesnt matter. I like yellow for visibility. I also love the FG knot. I use 7 or 8 feet of leader. Travels thru the guides. I also use big pinch weights lol. Sharpie might attract bass. It smells like boiled peanuts.

I don't know if this is do-able. But could you test for the best (least) line twist of different braid lines. using ur spooling tool. I find this is my main reason to change lines. I dont usually worry about abrasion on braid. if i lose a fish because of a breakoff due to abrasion, i give the fish the victory.

If a company states a braid to be 10lb and it brakes at 20lb + then it is 20lb + braid and they understating the braking strain. 10lb is 10lb same as 10lb bricks are just as heavy as 10lb features. Match the diameter and PE rating that is a mass rating because some braids are flat so they thin on one cross section and thick on the other.

I wouldn't want to fish for fish that I only needed a 10lb line. I start at 40 and only go up from there! It is salmon fishing and big pike in the clearest rivers and lakes Canada has to offer then right into the oceans off the west coast!

I was under the impression that these bass fishermen used 50lb braid because lighter braid cuts into the spool on a baitcaster reel
@warinotrapp136
@warinotrapp136 3 жыл бұрын
They use 50lb and higher specifically to tow in bass as fast as possible so they can catch more faster. And to cut through weeds. This trend started with the professional circuit for tournament fishing. You know, the $70k tracker boats, 15 tackle boxes and the NASCAR style shirts with sponsor branding all over it. For bass. I match the line to the rod and reel. If your reel has 20lbs of drag, 20lb line is a good match. So for a 7 and 7.5 foot rod, I use 3000 or 4000 size reels which are usually in the 25lb drag range on mid priced spinning reels. 10lb braid is too light for inshore. I was fishing for specks 2 weeks ago and suddenly found myself being towed by a tarpon. I was using shrimp knuckles. 20lb is my goto for inshore.

If any line’s breaking point is more than what it advertises, it’s an intentional false claim. Breaking point is breaking point!! Example: 10 lb braid breaks at 20 lb, then it’s 20 lb. You are actually using 20lb. Losing casting distance. Drop down to what you want and get more distance.
