How To Choose Between Buying A Seiko SKX009 Or SKX007 & New Series Announcement

Hi TGV It’s a good idea with this kind of videos I think... This is more a comment than a question. I know what you mean about being fussy when matching a watch with your clothes. But another thing comes into consideration when you are to choose between two watches, namely matching with the other pieces in your collection... I would prefer the 009 just because of the more original look of it. But I have a blue Seamaster 300 and from that point of view I would probably go for the 007. It would give my collection more variation. If I had no other watches at all I would probably still go for the 007 because it matches all kinds of clothes. But I still love the look of the 009😉 Keep up the good work👍

Agreed. So many watches feature a black dial. I enjoying my 009 because it is a little different from the rest of the pack. Now, if picking a watch that would be my only timepiece, I would probably go 007. Cheers!

I bought the 009 then the 007. I was a G-SHOCK wearer but always liked the dive watch look. I bought the 007 when it was confirmed the SKX was discontinued but felt it was ridiculous to have two of the same styles so I sent it back. The next day I regretted that decision and emailed the company. They returned the 007 to me and now I'm satisfied. The 007 has traveled 3 times across the United States due to my initial buyers remorse then regret of sending it back.

Speaking of cars, there seems to be sort of a parallel in the stigmas surrounding engineering philosophies of Japanese/European car manufacturing and Japanese/European watchmaking with the Japanese tending toward simplicity and reliability, and Europeans tending toward mechanical complexity and craftsmanship (both having their exceptions, of course). Read about European Yellow Peril. The stigma goes far beyond watches. As a South East Asian myself, I have witnessed how lowly some Europeans view Asia. Only recognising Japan and Korea, brushing the rest of us off as poor and stupid. Not all of them, of course. Though the few European gentlemen I’ve met are definitely the exception, not the rule. I got the skx009 because of the colour scheme and fitting. Its unique in the sense that you only need one of that colour scheme and the rest of the seikos or other pepsi schemed wathes have a different dimension/weight/feeling. Whereas if you look at the black sub line, there are so many out there that the differentiation between them can really get nitpicky until it only depends on the branding. So i got 1 skx009 and probebly will get a more higher end black sub.

I would 99% of the time go with the all black 007, but since I wear so many neutral colored t-shirts and sweatshirts with a pair of jeans or shorts the 009 gives me some color. You cant go wrong either way. great watch.

When thinking about an SKX, think also about the Citizen NY0040. I love both watches, but the 0040 has a really special place in my heart, so much that I own it in 3 different dial configurations (black, blue and full luminous). I find it to be more elegant than the SKX, by being thinner and having applied hour markers. In terms of toughness, I put them above the SKX, since I never had a problem with my NY0040 in 10 years of abuse, whereas I had to tighten the rotor of my 007 after a year because it came loose. Both outstanding watches anyway, that I actually use as dive tools.

I had the 007 v 009 dilema and decided on the 009 as i wanted that pop of colour and its a weekend/jeans watch for me so the blue works well. One thing is if you buy and later decide you made a mistake you can change the bezel easily, the face is so dark blue you really would wouldn’t notice its not black.

My father has a Seiko quartz from the early 90s that’s still keeping perfect time; it just needs battery replacements every 7-10 years. As long as you don’t allow old dead batteries to leak inside your quartzes they should be good for awhile!

In Germany the SKX is now like 250-500€ what is way to expensive for what you get! It is a classic and icon but for that price (400€+) you can even get a Swiss Made watch. I boght the new (2018) Seiko SRPB91K1 for under 200€ and it‘s a better choice I think. Biggest pro is the movement that is handwinding and hacking! It‘s 44mm but wears more like 42mm.

Watch prices in EU is a joke... In Lithuanian market, old models with price tags like its the latest model. Also the shops usually do not have models to try them on (shop owners probably a blind men when they plan what watches to sell) it's only for pre ordering... On top of that where is no such thing as proper sales like in US...

I have the SKX009. I bought a Hirsch Grand Duke alligator embossed navy blue leather strap with a matte buckle and a Hirsch Carbon embossed red leather strap with a polished buckle. Both are 100M water resistant and both are perfect compliments to a great diver watch.

I actually set out to get a 007 because I like submariners but am poor, but after much research I have ended up with a 009 on the jubilee strap, it was how it looked on a red/blue nato that changed my mind though dark blue suede & shark mesh are in the post too, love it.

Hi TGV, glad that I bought the SKX013 on the black dial (had a smaller wrist else I would have gotten the SKX007). Yes, you are right. A diver with a black dial is more compatible with any other watch straps (NATO or even leather) if you should choose to buy one. I was feeling quite undecided about which SKX (SKX009 or SKX007/013) to buy initially as I didn't want to end up buying 2 watches (although I would love to buy 2 but didn't want to get a earful from my wife about spending too much money on watches). Now, I am very happy with my SKX013. Thank you TGV.

My suggestion (and choice) is the SKX009 and get an additional black bezel to change out from time to time. The dark blue dial goes well with the black bezel and still gives that FABULOUS option of Red and Blue for summer wear! Best summer watch EVER! SKX009

I bought the 009 over the 007, in hindsight from a collecting perspective I should of gone for the 007. It's the more iconic look and now that the skx is cancelled it's the one that is worth more. BUT from a watch wearing enjoyment, I still absolutely adore my 009.

I am very much enjoying that Matt blue dial and Pepsi bezel. Don't know why I didn't get one earlier. Now, one is on the hunt for the 011 to round out the collection. The perfect SKX trifector. From my perspective: Rado is very well respected here in Switzerland, they have a name for sleek design, and known to be higher-priced. Several people I know wear a Rado Ceramica. Imho the 009 is more of a summer watch, great for outdoor activities especially the beach or the pool. Also I believe the 009 looks better on the jubilee bracelet than the plain black 007. One more plus, the 009 was the choice of Stormin Norman Swartzkopf and Robert Redford! Nuff said.

Bought the SKX007 not long after starting to watch your videos and not regretted it. Took the bracelet off and bought a bunch of Nato straps and just swap them out to match with different outfits.

Something I get asked a lot: how to set time on a non-hacking watch, for example the Speedy moonwatch. A lot of people don't know you can stop/reverse the second hand by turning the time backwards and hold the crown with little pressure. Works with many movements and very easy to do, also you don't damage it when you do this, it's suposed to be like that. You set the seconds hand first and the minute hand when the seconds pass 12. Video would be helpful I guess!

Share problems you have had with mechanical watches and how you fixed them. For example I recently had my Omega SMP magnetized while handling an electric vehicle’s charging plug. Yeah, Seiko SKX007 vs SKX009. Both are great, can't go wrong. I have an SKX007. Should have gone with 009 but the 007 is more versatile at least :D. 009 is casual, 007 can go with a suit in a pinch (not advisable but doable IMHO).

No question TGV just an opinion. I think video is a little too short. I'm confident you'll find the right balance as this is a new format you're trying.. Nonetheless , I added a Seiko to my collection for all the obvious reason. I went with the the "Baby Turtle". I have to say ,I enjoy all the watches in my modest collection. Junghans Telemeter Chronoscope (TGV reviewed) , Sinn 104 (TGV reviewed) and a Vintage Zenith (circa 1942). My Seiko has become my everyday wear. Tough as nails , The alignment is of 9.99% (guessing I got lucky) +6/10 secs per day and I wear it care free. No worries about this watch getting beat up, which make me love it even more.

I really wanted an skx007 to start my collection, but ended up buying the 009 just because I found it at the right prize first. I am super happy with it, and haven't had a single regret. I tend to wear a lot of dark and earth color clothes, and I find that the tiny splash of color on my wrist is a really fresh breath. I never thought it was hard to pair with clothes in general, just because the blue is so dark it looks almost black, and the watch is such a beauty anyways :)

What watch has better quality for the price: Christopher Ward C60 Trident, or the Squale 1521? I have a small wrist, but I heard that the squale 1521 is acceptable on a small wrist, which watch would you recommend. Greetings, Tijn

I was gonna get the 007. Last minute I got the 009 because it played such a prominent role in All is Lost. The watch got so much screen time in that film. It was practically his Co-Star.

Sniper Bay on amazon do nice NATOs at good prices. We'll stitched in loops, burnt curved ends. Burnt buckle holes. Soft on the wrist available in at least 18, 20 and 22mm. I have bond and dark green ones in 20mm. Very satisfied. For reference I have 7inch wrist.

I personally go to authorized dealers that are on the website of the brand that service watches. Sometimes I don't stay local & go a distance simply because I gained my trust with a couple. Those 2 are 2-3 hrs away but I make it worth while.

My preference, if you care enough about your watches don’t skimp on the service. Have had one horror story on my 1st anniversary gift Seiko SKX diver that a local jeweler said he could replace the battery on an...bad mistake. Had to send it back to Seiko USA for repair. Lesson learned, only use authorized dealers for your valued timepieces.

I had a similar question a few years ago when choosing between the 007 and 009. This is what I did: While brick and mortar stores may not always have SKX's, they do have turtles in Pepsi and the Black Bezel/dial models... try the Pepsi & all Black Turtles to get a good sense of how it will look on your wrist with your "general" dressing style.. I got a SKX007 - J .. because it looked like I can wear it with anything in my wardrobe.. as compared to the Pepsi..

Hey TGV, I bought the 009 and i love the fact that i can change modded bezels with it and i must say... if you put a black bezel insert to the 009, it does look like the 007 (on the other hand if you put the pepsi bezel to the 007, it does not look like the 009) so for me, the 009 is more versatile. I have the pepsi bezel, the 007 bezel, a batman bezel, a blue lumed bezel, an orange bezel and a grey bezel... it looks like a different watch with each bezel.

Get the 007. I’m wearing a 009 now, but sometimes I wish I had gone for the 007 instead. I wish the 009 was a lighter blue, it might as well be black. Still an amazing piece, and the lume is wonderful!
