Күн бұрын

As everyone who tunes in to the Urban Gentry regularly knows, the now discontinued iconic Seiko SKX is my favorite dive watch. Naturally, I had to do a quick episode of Gentry In A Jiffy (GIAJ) to share my first impressions of the rumored replacement of the SKX007, SKX009 and even the SKX011!
But this is no ordinary release, as it coincides with a 2019 rebranding of the entire historic Seiko 5 line of affordable watches. Why are Seiko doing this? What’s changed, and what has stayed the same? What do I like and dislike about them so far? In this video I am joined by the right dishonorable Hugo Mountbatten for a first look at this new era for the Seiko 5 and what it means for the brand and watch enthusiast community.

@UCr4aUXslStRRlgxRGjp3Eew people will still want the classic skx for that water resistance, thats gonna raise the price on those right there. All the same, there's already dozens of desk divers in the seiko 5 line-up. I have one with a 4r36. I don't understand why they sacrificed the water resistance for it.

Part of the allure when I bought my first SKX was that it was a professional rated diver. Even though it never saw the water it's just nice to have that pop of red that says "Diver's 200M", and knowing that it's built to true professional standards. It kills the magic a little bit for me and I'm curious how that'll affect their sales on this new line.

disastrix47 Agreed. It would be a shame to lose that combination of affordable professional diver. The only thing I wanted them to do was put in the balance rather than counter-balance position. That and make it hackable.

These are Seiko 5's broken up into niche segments. A dive watch is a dive watch. They have taken the iconic look of the SKX and use it for the Seiko 5 level now. These clearly aren't divers as Seiko 5's have never been. The iconic look lives on instead of being killed off completely, and I for one appreciate that.

Roger Dottin “diver watches” have been a style of watch for many years now. A lot of manufacturers like Casio make diver style watches that are only certifed to 100m or less. It’s like being pissed that a pilot watch doesn’t have an altimeter. It’s become a style of watch, not a lot of people actually use specific type of watches for specific jobs. Divers don’t wear watches, they wear diving computers. Pilots don’t wear pilot watches, they have their instrument panel.

No, that was also one of my first thoughts. Especially when TheUrbanGentry mentioned the "shield-like-character" of the logo! :) The new logo seems to me a bit fancier for the targeted younger audience... I like the classic one better. And I don't think there can be a real replacement for the SKX...Even if they would replace the movement with hacking and so on. The "new SKX" would lose the characteristics, that made the original SKX special... You can't replace an original! :)

I'm not! 😂 I take my old skx013 on every dive, and I dive for a living. But if I was buying now I would hardly be stuck for choices from Seiko, Citizen, or Orient to name just 3 at this approximate price point. I agree wholeheartedly with you that this relaunch is giving the majority of buyers what they want. That said, I have always felt that part of the legend with the skx, which added to its appeal for whoever was buying it, was that it was a real dive watch that could hang with the big boys. It had a seriousness that belied its accessibility. It was a bona fide tool watch. These new ones lose something with that, but perhaps they make it up in other ways.

The drilled lugs, hacking and manual wind of the upgraded movement, added to the new colours and its a winner. I wanted am all green diver style for a while and the 5 fitted the bill perfectly. I've owned mine now for 1 month, and it's hardly left my wrist. I even wore it to work erecting a built in robe one day. I really do love it, and love the comfort of the SKX style casing. Even though, it's heavy and a decent size, although wears smaller, it is very comfortable and I like the bracelet. It's keeping great time, with no noticeable loss or gains. I'm very happy 😁

Just bought mine and it’s great. I’ve changed my mind. It’s really spitting image of the old Seiko vintage SQ150 diver. For the office and running around it’s solid piece. The finishing is great. The movement pleasant. The details lovable. Diving? No. Movie date night? Yes. I have other divers for oceans days but this was a pleasant surprise. The crown is not a big deal. The screw down crown is not for water pressure. The seals are for that. The screw down helps divers with not getting their gear or equipment snagged on the crown.

It's a nice move but it makes me want the SKX even more now. I might have to bite the bullet. To have an affordable watch with the ISO stamp IS AWESOME. If there is a hidden trend these days, it would be to have a "style" like design, but not the functional side of things. Mmm, back to deciding between a K or J SKX :) I would of liked to see a version without a date window. I feel like Seiko constantly tries to impress with more but I'd like something that can make a statement with less... at least as an option :)

As stated already, the majority of consumers (myself included) buying a "Professional Diver's" watch will never wear it in the swimming pool, let alone to the depths of the great blue. You have to say this is smart business by Seiko- why let other builders/ modders take your potential business? I'm not distraught that it's not a 'true diver' now, and after seeing the range I would love to own so many of these, so perhaps the marketing department does know what it's doing! Although I am a bit of a tart so the case colour and dial variations appeal. Look forward to some of your reviews- if possible I'd love a closer look at the textured dial models, and the dark grey/ black cases. Oh, and please clear up whether the 'proper skx' replacement model has a navy dial or black! Many thanks, take care.

The new Seiko 5 line is all good and nice, but it is hardly a successor of the SKX. What was so special about the SKX was that it is a 200€ watch that can look any Fifty Fathoms or Sea Dweller into the eye and not flinch. Every serious watch guy has one, because it was too good and to affordable too miss. I remember myself sitting at the North Sea, thinking about what end game diver to buy (shortlist was GS or Blancpain) and then looked at my SKX and though: Why buy another diver at all? I perfectly fine! Those new Seiko 5s are more entry level, „just one more watch“ style of watches, while the SKX is a true endgame watch. I‘ve spend much more money on straps, bracelets and mods for my SKX007 then on the watch itself and in the end, returned to factory configuration. The 4R movement though is a nice upgrade. Those movements can perform exceptionally good.

I think since Seiko are the watch modders favourite blank canvas, Seiko are returning the compliment with these watches. They reflect a many of the current trends in watch customisation and demonstrate that Seiko are keen observers of what goes on with their timepieces once they've left the factory. This trend for following the back street heroes of watch modding is precisely what the Japanese motorcycle industry started doing in the early 00's, with the advent of the so called 'factory customs'. The adoption of fashion cues from the bikes that were emerging from custom builders workshops and out on the streets. Its a cute marketing ploy and plays right into the the notion of selling more watches to a younger generation. Cool looking watches, right out of the box without having to do all the tricky moves to have the watch looking just how you want it to look.

After hearing a few other youtuber opinions on it not being iso or a screw down crown, it did seem Seiko might be trying to cut costs, BUT after hearing the always positive TGV speak about Seiko doing this to bring in new enthusiasm for the next generation and making the SKX replacement line a entry level version of their more professional divers, that makes absolute sense. And it actually is kind of genius of Seiko. They are basically offering pre modded SKX’s and they can release new versions all the time to create buzz. I can just hear the young buyers “Oh have you seen the new blah blah blah version?!!” I think it’s a good move, as long as prices are kept at entry levels.

I see this as an appealing alternative to fashion watches, giving younger watch enthusiasts a choice for a legitimate proper mechanical watch. This watch has improved indicies over the standard SKX with surrounds around the lume. Granted the lack of a lume pip on the bezel and non ISO makes this more of a casual watch than a diver. But lets us all be honest with ourselves. First, most people never used the SKX as a true professional dive watch anyway, and second, without the SKX, seiko still has about 11 skillion more divers to pick from, some of which can be had for 300 bucks all the way up to 5000 dollars. This is a welcome mat of colors and styles for a broader range of watch buyers who will not need a PADI or ISO certified watch. Further, this is a nod to the modders, and the fun of making a watch their own. This is Seiko taking small part in that whole modding culture offering a canvas with some work already done rather than the blank white canvas of the bog standard SKX007/009. When watches get modded by most hacks like myself at home, we install a new seal and lube it properly and do what we can, but we do not have the equipment to ensure its 200m water tight any more anyway. So the 100M and the hacking and hand winding is is a breath of fresh air. I see this as pure win for Seiko.. Smart move and will be wildly successful in ushering more people into the mechanical watch hobby. I say Bravo.

Lets be honest. I have many many dives to my name. And the statement “professional divewatch” is one I want to comment on. Not even once in all my dives, did I use a “divewatch” as being sold by all the famous watchbrands. Basically, the main feature you need in a divewatch is a depthsensor (i.e. pressure sensor). And not one of the famous watchbrands has a depthsensor. My main divewatch is a Suunto Vytec. More a divecomputer than a divewatch. My mechanical divewatches in my watch collection I would NEVER EVER use for a dive. Especially not for diving in salt water.

Wow. I am excited. I was checking this new line of Seiko out yesterday. So happy to get your opinion TGV. I’m Planning on buying at least four or five of these over the next year or so.Seiko is King !! What did you think about the new logo? The new five. I think it’s super cool it looks like an S and it looks like a 5. I only have one small tattoo, that I’ve had for almost 50 years, but I’m considering getting that new 5 put on somewhere. If my wife approves. LOL. That’s how much I love Seiko. I think I Will contact Seiko and see I can get about 10 watches for the free advertisement.

I think this is a true half glass full/half glass empty situation. If you come from the Seiko 5 Sports side it is the first, you are getting the iconic case design from the SKX, an improved movement (4R36) which only some Seiko 5s have, and a ton new faces and straps to choose. If you are coming from the SKX side then you are indeed from the empty side of the glass. As far as the price Seiko Prospex and Seiko 5s usually sell at 60, 65% of the retail price even through Seiko ADs, you may expect this watches being sold Around 185 to 220USD, I don't think anyone has paid full retail for a Samurai or Turtle when newly released since they always have discounted prices way below the retail price. With this announcement I'm considering selling my SNZH53J1 and get the New Blue Suits with mesh SRPD71K1, total stunner!!! Greetings from Bogotá Colombia TGV!

Totally agree that it's a smart move on Seiko's part to lure the youth away from fashion watches to automatics. But in my heart of hearts I want to believe that the 'real' SKS replacement is yet to come. I love the Prospex line having recently aquirred the Samurai Save The Ocean White Shark model. What I would like to see to replace the SKS as their entry level diver is the same caliber movement as this new line in a 200 meter ISO certified package at a slightly higher, say +$30~50 price point.

I bought the blue version on a bracelet (Ref. SBSA001) yesterday, the JDM version. It has a beautiful, beautiful sunburst dial with applied indices and Seiko logo. The color of the dial and bezel changes from almost black to royal blue. My excuse for buying it was that I could use it as a substitute for my blue "Bond" Seamaster on occasions where I would not want to wear an Omega. Now the Seamaster looks dull next to the Seiko, and I'm wondering if it's going to become my new everyday watch. (The Seamaster is more comfortable to wear though.)

I agree with your opinion on this watch being a smart move from Seiko. Unlike other established watch brands they’re actually targeting a younger audience with a fashionable line of watches at a somewhat (some might argue) reasonable price that actually has a good automatic movement inside. If the rest of the reputable watch brands would have this kind of mindset the successful fashion watch brands might have more competition. Looking forward to your review of the ”5kx”. I recently purchased the SRPD65k1 and I love it for everyday use. It looks good, has a great movement with hacking, manual wind capabilities, day/date complication, a good enough water resistance and a case that feels sturdy. That’s all I need and for the 270$ I paid I think it’s a great entry level dive style watch that looks great! If I needed a proper dive watch I would just get a Samurai instead.

What will I do without the "extra" 100m of water resistance? Truth is that if my watch and I find ourselves in more than 20 FEET of water, I'm probably dealing with worries far greater than a leaky watch. I don't know why people fret so much about the WR compared to the SKX. I'm happy to be able to buy a Seiko in the SKX style and being able to hand wind it and not bother unscrewing the crown every time I do so. And as far as price goes, I think almost no one is paying $295+ for these watches. I just bought a 95 for

I definitely agree here. It’s funny you mention how unscrewing the crown is not necessary - I just got it today and the manual said to pull the crown out to set the time (probably since it is also the manual for the 7S26!) ... I think that Seiko is a visionary company and this marketing campaign just proves it. While the watch market is being hurt by the fashion watches, the new SKX pops up for young people and give them many choices of a watch such as other brands. Maybe this watch isn't for the Gentry in general but I think we shouldn't be so harsh with it. If this strategy of Seiko brings more people into real quality watches then I believe that all the community would win with more enthusiasts and that's what a community really needs.

I like the new range even if there are some design choices I don't agree with, and you're right in saying that the SKX doesn't fit into the contemporary Seiko range of watches. However, the appeal of the SKX to me was never about the design. The ISO certification at that price imbued a certain sense that this was a "big boys" watch and in that sense watches like the Orient Ray or Mako could never deliver, in spite of them being arguably more refined (from a design perspective) and with higher quality finishing. The new line just doesn't have that anymore.

Yes, this is officially a Seiko 5 with an SRPD ref code now, not SKX. But, I think you'd be foolish to think this wasn't where the former SKX is now residing moving forward. As such, for the SKX line, I still think this is 1 step forward and 3 steps back. Not going to get into the superficial cosmetic options. Yes, you finally get a 4R36 movement. But, you lose 200m WR and consequently the ISO certified rating, no screwdown crown and I believe the lume pip is also removed as most, if not all, Seiko 5's have neither of these lost features. Some say the SKX was always part of the Seiko 5. IDK, don't really care about that... nearly all Seiko 5 specs are unlike the SKX's which were really closer to Prospex watches, imho. I know these will sell either way and almost nobody uses these for any serious diving purposes. But, that is beside my point. What once was a legitimate tool watch for divers has now been downgraded mostly spec-wise. It's ashamed since the SKX's lineage can really trace its way back through many iterations and the famous 6105. I mean that's a long fairly well-known line of watches which many would consider serious and reliable dive watches for decades. Now, it is not. I mean look at all the advert pics and none of them are remotely in or near a body of water, nor share any sort of dive heritage, where the former SKX should naturally belong within. And, in typical Seiko fashion, they either give you something you wanted for a while (such as hacking & hand-winding movement + new colors) and take things away and charge you more for it. Or, they might give you everything you probably wanted (the 62mas and 6105 reissues for somewhat recent starters) but will make the big leap and charge you an arm and leg for it. Don't get me completely wrong. I think Seiko 5's are great. There are a lot of really cool ones. And, these new "SKX-like" Seiko 5's will make fairly good entry-level watches for Seiko, not necessarily entry-level dive watches anymore, however. And, probably a great starting platform for mods also. But, I still think the spirit and more professionally spec'd SKX prior to these watches has taken a negative hit. Personally, I felt it may have been more logical to upgrade and rightfully elevate the SKX status officially into the Prospex line instead of Seiko 5. I mean people saying the Prospex is too large already aren't entirely correct. I mean there are probably even way more Seiko 5 models than many know about.

First thank you for remain original and pay so much attention for affordable watches. New replacement of Seiko SKX and 5 overall is not a mistake if we look from Seiko shoes, as throguh this put a clear barier between a real diver and a “look as a diver” watch and so push the clients to chose an expensive diver if they really dive and to chose only a diver style for less money if clients like the style. From client perspective, personally think that improving movement with only a step above and eliminating water resistance but a double price at the end is a kind of exageration and the risk is that people to give up at one affordable line due to the fact is not affordable anymore and more than this, price are not reflected 100% in quality.

Heard a not so optimistic rant about them earlier and do find the downgrade in diving specs disappointing, but also think some are too quick to see this as a direct replacement instead of a Seiko 5 homage to the SKX. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually added a Prospect variant of the SKX case with the dive specs intact. Then again, if not, many speak of the SKX as a sort of starter watch and the Seiko 5 line runs cheaper and is more readily available than the original SKX was, so this one fits that role just fine while leaving the door open to add a Samurai or Turtle. Not that there wasn't something nice about having an affordable, ISO certified dive watch vs a mere dive style watch, but I followed up my SKX with a lower spec Seiko 5 SNZH60 that's actually still to this day my most frequently complimented on watch. Granted, that's likely because it's gold (I replaced the bracelet with a NATO strap, btw, as it's just too much gold for my liking otherwise), but, being only my second addition since getting serious about watches, it was a nice, affordable change up piece until I could build my collection a bit more and this new Seiko 5 seem like it could be that for a lot of newcomers.

But not everyone like the Turtle or the 3 O'clock crown on the Samurai. I guess if you're looking for a 200m dive watch with a 4 o'clock crown that's not in a turtle case, look anywhere other than Seiko. 3rd-party microbrands are going to take the money Seiko just left on the table with SKX-style cases w/4 o'clock crowns and NH36 movements.
