Thank you...I grew up in an old abandon orchard..Moved away came back to mushroom hunt and started crying cause house development is starting in those old fields..Only few trees left. The orchard went out of business in the 30s. Trees left untouched for many many trees.. Thinking they are old Grimes and some transparents. They are like national treasures to me. Many years of playing and eating free apples that tasted nothing like what's in a store. I have never grafted or even planted an apple tree. I'm trying to preserve something from these old girls..Great video. So many out there..

Hi Stefan thanks for the informative video. You mention that if the scion is long you can cut off a bit. At which end would you shorten the scion? Last year's terminal bud section or newest growth section?
@StefanSobkowiak Жыл бұрын
Depends on the size of the rootstock. If you can match the size the cut above the third bud.
@Sami-Nasr8 ай бұрын
Two things not mentioned here, what is the temperature in the fridge and you shouldn't store scions with fruits in fridge, they will bud sooner than the outside kept scions because of the ethylene gas released by the fruits
@skie62823 жыл бұрын
Any advice on what to do when you want a scion from a very old apple tree? I think the only 1 year wood is a few short inches if at all, as the tree is super over grown and old. Should i graft the buds only? Edit, i want to graft it to a young small tree so we can see what well grown apples it used to produce
@StefanSobkowiak3 жыл бұрын
You can gather a shoot that barely grew an inch even half inch. It can work as a scion. You may need to remove the flowers later in season.

Another question: an old farmer (master of grafting) showed me that he is grafting huge, enormous scions - some over 5 feet long, obviously older than one year old. Do you see better success rate when scion is larger 12 inches or so and with terminal buds?

:) Merci encore!
@StefanSobkowiak4 жыл бұрын

I used a little bit more water on paper because of evergreen scions. Set +1 celsius on my fridge, but thermometer shows approximately "0" . Sometimes temperature drops to "-1" celsius and I can feel the paper becomes slightly stiff. The temperature in the fridge varies between +2 and -1. Will it damage my scions?
@StefanSobkowiak7 ай бұрын
Probably not, just put them in a box with an unfrozen ice pack, it will help buffer the changes in temp.

I have only fall grafted plums. Do a bit of searching for the answer. Grafting is like baking, once you have a recipe you like and works stick with it.

Curious if one can use "water spouts" (one year shoots coming off last year's pruning cuts) if thats the right terminology? They seem way thicker and maybe easier to work with then the one year growth I'm seeing on the main branches ?
@StefanSobkowiak7 ай бұрын
You can but you will likely end up with a tree that will flower one or two years later with a water sprout. Hormonal effect is strong but sometimes you want the extra vigour.
@jaspycaspy62047 ай бұрын
@@StefanSobkowiak I'm confused, and interested by your response..it will flower on the new grafted on piece in a year or two , and instead of bearing fruit it will drop flower and just keep on growing wood??
@StefanSobkowiak7 ай бұрын
Where you gather scions does have an effect, as per my mentor Dr Lespinasse. I never got a good grasp of the exact effect but overall taken from a sucker, very upright the branch and scions are in juvenile mode hormonally. Meaning they think they need to grow a full tree before becoming fruitful. Thereby the delay in fruiting. While a smaller branch that is not upright taken from a fruiting branch is in fruiting mode hormonally and when grafted will grow for two years and flower in the third.
