This video is going to be all about the best health majors and health degrees out there
This was a highly requested video and it took me awhile to make because I wanted to do the proper research on it
----------
Health science degrees are some of the best options out there in my opinion (although I am biased as a Pharmacist myself)
The demand is incredible (by far the best demand out of any type of degree or career field), the pay is good, and the work is meaningful as you get to help people for a living
However they can be really difficult to rank because there are so many different variations
2 year associate level degrees like registered nurse (RN), 4 year bachelor degrees like BSN (
Bachelor of science in nursing), 6 year master level degrees such as Physician Assistant (PA), or even 8 year doctoral level degrees such as MD (Medical Doctor)
Comparing a 2 year degree to an 8 year degree is like comparing apples to oranges in many ways, so this video was surprisingly difficult to make
My main philosophy on this channel is to go with a career or major that aligns with your goals
So if your goal is to eventually make $75k a year in a career that you like, maybe a 2 year degree would be better for you
If you want to go all out and retire early, maybe a 6 year degree would be better for you
Hopefully this video will help you choose if you're interested in a health care degree
By the way, to they people that leave comments like "Money isn't everything, don't think about money when choosing a degree, just go with your passion"...
1) I agree that you should take passion into consideration as well as money (since that's the point of a job after all). I've make videos about that in the past and will into the future
2) This is a personal finance channel, so I talk about things related to finances on this channel
Enjoy,
~Shane

If you plan on pursuing a health degree, do not I repeat DO NOT pursue it because you were pressured by your parents! Your parents most of the time will just look at the salary and think it's the best for you. All it will do is make you miserable. Only pursue health if you have a true passion for helping people

While I was at Community College for my Associate's in Nursing; my friends would make fun of me for my career path. I paid tuition with my credit card and paid the card off before each semester had finished. The month before graduation, I got a job with an 8k sign-on bonus and I had only 12k in debt from living expenses. I started out making ~55-60k/year while working 36hr/ww with benefits. 3 years later, I moved and worked as a contractor for the DOD at a military hospital making 80k/year 36hr/ww. One year later, I became a GS-11 gov worker and I get 10% nights and 25% weekends. I bring home about 105k/year. There's a lot of flexibility and I have never had a problem finding a job.

I’m a PT student and I love the field, couldn’t see myself doing anything else. But, I have many friends who went into other health care fields and here’s what I’ve learned: I love PT school, however the debt income ratio is not amazing unless you you are a travel therapist or work in home care. But the job is extremely rewarding and PT is basically their own entity so you don’t have certain stresses such as being yelled at by doctors all the time like PAs/ nurses seem to experience. However I think those are great options too. I think one of the best things someone can do is become an RN at a community college for barely any money and likely a hospital will pay for them to obtain their bachelors. I think this is a good idea for respiratory therapists as well. I believe that might be an option for radiation therapists as well. In regards to PT I think many people are unaware that you need to obtain a doctorate in physical therapy that takes 7 years (unless you attend a 6 year direct entry program) before you can take the boards. It is also very expensive. Also that there is more to it than mobility. PTs are supposed to be experts in the human movement system including CV, msk, neuro, integumentary, etc. They can perform air away clearance techniques, perform sharp selective wound debridement, diagnosis a wide variety of injuries etc, assist in management of burns, treat lymphedema etc. But, often times other healthcare workers think their expertise only lies in orthopedics which isn’t true, there are specialties in neuro, ortho, oncology, sports, cardio pulm, women’s health and more. Another reason I chose it was because I hate math and there is no dosing medications with PT, haha. I think it also allows you to have autonomy over your patients as many states have direct access without the stress of patients being in life threatening condition all the time the way you might be stressed as an MD, etc. I think over all I would say if you can help it, pick which ever one you can’t see yourself doing anything else besides and choose the cheapest/ fastest route. Also work hard right from the get-go because it won’t be fun if anything has to get repeated. Good luck health care people :)!

Keep in mind, you can get your Associate's in nursing; work a couple years in something like ER (you'll treat peds, geriatrics, psych, trauma etc) and gain some experience while bridging to bachelors and then to NP. Your employer will reimburse you as you'll gain experience while getting paid.

@Naveen Francis I’m an EMT going for an allied health degree. Unless you plan on getting your fire fighters license or plan on working in a major city it’ll be hard to live unless you work two + jobs. It’s also extremely hard on your body. There are ways to make good money (ie flight medic) but it’ll take time and will still be hard on the body after time.

I’m dental student in japan and I agree with this idea. Dentist is very inflexible job and only choice you can get after graduation is most likely to be dentist and you cannot work as any other type of doctor. Private school is pretty expensive, and public college(which run by government 国立) are super hard that can let you get into medical school. But as he said salary is pretty good, as older population grows in developed country, more patient will increase. Anyway thanks for the vid!!!

Just some clarification on nurse practitioners: we can't just switch to another specialty, we would have to go back to school to get the didactics and clinicals and take that particular specialty board exam before anyone will hire us to do that particular job. Additionally, most schools are transitioning to the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and phasing out the master's degree. PAs, on the other hand can switch more easily between specialties, as you mentioned.

At the last hospital I worked at, one of the PAs traveled over 6 hours to work in the ER and also did stents at the urgent care clinic. He loved it but could easily transfer to any other specialty as he had done work in other areas. One of the NPs working in the ER (that I worked in) also worked at the other local ER, fast track, an ENT clinic, and as an FNP at a more rural clinic. I'm in school now with Emergency Medicine as my undergraduate major. With several years of EMS experience, I found this video to be very helpful and accurate. I'm hoping to start a PA or NP program next year.

My son wanted to work with children so he decided to become a pediatric nurse. I guided him through his journey so that he could complete his degree in the least amount of years and with little or no debt. First, in high school, he took classes in his junior and senior years that count for college credit. He took the maximum transferable credits which was 15, which equals one semester. He took freshman classes such as Psyc 1 and English 1. He then decided to attend a community college that offered a nursing degree. The tuition was cheaper and the competition to get into the program was lower than a four year college. Another advantage was that he would start his nursing courses almost immediately while at the four-year college, he'd have to complete all the liberal arts courses and then compete as he was entering his junior year, for a spot in the nursing program. What if he didn't make it? The route he chose, he completed his nursing courses and his 15 credits from high school transferred and he took his nursing exam after finishing getting his associates degree. He took the state licensing exam is now an RN. At the same time, the school had a partnership with a four-year college and he was accepted to finish getting his bachelor's degree. He is taking classes in the summer and winter and already has a nursing job starting at $72K. He is only 21 years old. He works in NYC and is looking to continue his education to become a nurse practitioner. Getting his degree was on the cheap. He lived at home and commuted to the community college and worked summers for pocket money. New York City's CUNY school system is not very expensive and state residents can get an Excelsior scholarship for free tuition. The hospital he works for already committed to paying for his master's program.

@@Brian-bd1gc I’m not sure about your country. But by legal definition, a physician is a health care professional who has obtained an MD. In terms of the terminology, I’ll use the example of D.Ch and D.pod. These share very similar scopes of practises but have very different billing capabilities (due to their schooling and education Other than that, I don’t disagree with your premise at all - that [for example] DOs should be viewed different due to their unique approaches to therapy. Thanks for explaining the difference between PT and OT so well ! I am an occupational therapist working in a hospital and I love what I am doing, I highly recommend this field to someone who enjoys helping people, problem solvers and constant learners. Do make sure you go to a public school! I would not recommend taking student loan debt more than 70k- 80k (National OT average annual salary), otherwise you’ll be struggling with payments for a very long time !!

hey, just an update: occupational therapists are transitioning into requiring a doctorate degree. its fairly new, but is now required to get your licence. also, both ots and pts ask patients what they want to do/goal set with patients. so ots mainly focus on improving one's ability to do adls (activities of daily living), where pts work to improve on function, mobility, and pain management. otherwise, great job describing them!

NP requires a BSN first. then you get a masters in a specific specialty. For PA, you can get an undergrad degree in anything just complete the pre-reqs and take the GRE. you’ll also need at least 1000 hours of patient care before applying. there’s more flexibility though with changing specialties but you can’t prescribe meds and need oversight from a physician unlike NP

The only reason why I would rate NP as #1 and PA as #2 instead is because you can make money as you work from RN (2yrs) to NP (6yrs), whereas as a PA you have to wait 6 yrs to actually start making money. Also, the fact that PA is not recognized in many countries (completely nonexistent), whereas nurses are recognized internationally, so if anyone ever plans on traveling or living in a different country, it’s something important to consider. ☺️
