To be clear since you obviously don't listen to metal, those who do listen to metal find joy and happiness in the music so using that genre to engage in an audience that listens to that music in the first place would in fact convey happiness and joy. I get what your saying but your music should elicit the emotion you feel from it within that group that perceives it. For me hip hop and rap just drive me nuts so every time I hear it in a video it's a huge turn off no matter the topic. Know your audience, if it's keen to a specific genre of music then stay in your lane. Hope you understand my point!

This is close to the process that I use. For me, finding music for my videos is the hardest thing to do. But once I have the right song, editing basically happens by itself. Great Video Matti!!

I think that is a perfect way to word/approach it "Choose mood not genre". I also appreciated the Heavy Metal reference being a metalhead myself, and am quite guilty of trying to force my genre of preference on many occasions. Subconsciously I have been trying to use the "choose mood not genre" and it resonated with me the millisecond I heard those words. Great video, thank you.

Great Advice Matti. I think when we start our journey as editors, intuitively we go for a edit first and find song later approach without knowing why or how to do so. Eventually through KZbin, listening to tons of editors and trend culture you are swayed away from that into the "choose song and edit to the beats" school of thought (if you cant tell, Im talking about me haha). I have come to realize that couldn't be further from the truth. Although there is place for that style of editing, especially for short form videos or intentionally chosen scenes within a story, for long form story-telling you have to build the story first and use everything else as way to enhance or guide the emotion you're trying to elicit from the audience. Everything has to answer the question "WHY". Thank you Matti for re-affirming my learnings and being a great teacher!

my top tip is to listen to the general type of music while youre making the rough cuts, it especially helps when you don't have top notch clips, and even suggests a structure to vids that dont have any obvious structure.
