As a good news story I had a VW Amarok that had many issues with the dpf system. It had 40000km on the clock. I asked for a new one and they agreed. I got a brand new Amarok with brand new warranty. This new car now has 30000km on it and had no problems

If you're just starting your busines... in my humble opinion. Buy a second, or third, or even fourth hand Falcon ute in good nick. My AU was a cheap stop gap vehicle, she's got 480,000kms on her, 80,000 of which I put on the clock and it still runs like the Swiss rail network. Paid $5k for her five years ago and I keep saying "I'll get a new ute this year, as soon as the Falcon packs up". But alas the old girl still works as well as the day I bought it. It's never let me down, best car I've ever had and it's paid for itself ten times over.

This is very balanced advice from John. I think he's quite right about the different manufacturers. It's not always the best brands that are best at customer care. Many of them seem to forget that the most important person in the dealership is supposed to be the customer.

I have a Mazda 2 skyactiv-D and it is serviced every 6 months to the day by a Mazda dealer, eventhough I only do 5000km every 6 months. After 4 yrs an O2 sensor in the exhaust failed causing the DPF warning light to illuminate on a regular basis despite some motorway zooming. Mazda fixed it for free at the next service having pre-ordered the part. Saved me $AUS300. I like Mazda.

IMO the number one step for choosing the right car isn't looking at the brands - that comes later - it's looking at how you have used your car in the last year. How often have you had someone in the rear seats? How often have you had someone tall in the car? How often have you filled up the whole boot? How often do you drive long distances? How often have you gone off-road? A lot of people purchase vehicles that are far bigger, more capable and more expensive than they actually need IMO (dual-cab 4WD utes, I'm looking at you). The number one predictor of future usage of your car is previous usage, IMO.

If you can't afford extended down time, don't want to be at the mercy of roadside assist, or rely on your vehicle for your daily gardening/landscaping business, first criteria - buy something with a full size spare. I admit I have a loathing for space savers and a greater loathing for those useless goo and puff things that now come with so many new cars. Lack of a full size spare is an absolute deal breaker for me. Utes should be fine (I think).

I'm actually quite chuffed that I can replace 4 tyres for the price of one of the bigger one's. And as far as grip goes, I'm not using the car on a track. Don't get me started on those low profile crap. Here in South Africa, your big wheel with a low profile tyre will be damaged by a pothole, long before the tyre is smooth. And the ride is harsh, hard, crappy and uncomfortable. No thanks. I ❤steel rims with high profile tyres. If I hit a pothole, I won't damage much easily, and even if I do, I just need a hammer to knock the rim straight. Not thousands of $$$$ for a new alloy (looks) and super expensive low profile tyre. And I can carry a full size spare, you don't even know it's there, hidden away, taking very little space.

I have to take issue with you on this John. In my case, I have received unbelievable support from my Honda Dealer on the Gold Coast (Von Bibra). I put my car in for a service yesterday ($560 worth of items) and went to pick it up today. One of the Service people said that she had bad news - one of their technicians has damaged the car (panel and paint) and they owned up immediately. They WAIVED the Service cost of $560 and said that they would get the damage repaired and would give me a loan car while this was being done. I have also had some Warranty issues that could have been "line ball", but they fixed them all without the gnarly conversations. Maybe they are an exception, but credit due where it is due.

10:13 it is truly saddening how many of the once great Australian car review channels have become biased over the last few months/years *cough* "Car Expert" I mean I even commented on one of their latest videos due to the title, as it was something to the great provocative effect of "MY NEW RANGER HAS BEEN BUILT + a review". Which the film than portrayed footage of the reviewers supposed vehicle making its way through the assembly line. Plus, might I add repeated phrasing of the name of the transport ship it is going to be on, like that is meant to carry some sort of weight and meaning behind it. Being an accountant myself I know completely well certain tactics businesses envisage for brand & product promotion. I mean come on, what honest usage would an average KZbin car review consumer need of the name of this magical specific freight ship carrying a shitload of rangers from place of manufacture to Australia. Well, I'll tell you why. It's hype pure and simple. it's like Apple introducing a new product. People don't want to miss out. So, after laying out some of these concerns in a simple comment on this honestly once great channel to the effect of. "We don't come to this channel for undisclosed paid content and biased reviews" The producer responded personally fainting ignorance and understanding. I mean it's really abysmal. If you're going to accept endorsement from a company at least own up to it, rather than deceive. My 2cents

Suzuki isnt in the top 10? I would say im shocked but im frankly not as Suzuki Australia thinks that customers are exceedingly rich so they offer the most expensive models that are in the global lineup. Im surprised they werent offering the Across to one up Toyota , but then again they are slow to act on the shifting market tides. The brand offers great vehicles for a honest price, just not in this market. At least they have a automatic Swift Sport

Word on the street is to wait till next year to buy as high interest rates is putting lots of people under pressure to sell the overpriced FOMO priced cars they have bought over the last few years just to keep a roof over their head. Once all these forced sales hit the market prices will crash just like its happening in the US. The smart buyers will be picking up the pieces! Lol

I would disagree with the triton open center diff as selling point because I believe the bloke is probably after a lower spec tradie model that doesn’t have the super select II transfer case (most normal people don’t buy the top spec model as a work ute mate)

I think the journalists only see the best of cars. Brand new, if any issues they will be fixed before said journalist will get anywhere near them. I've never seen a review that looked at a new car, a similar car, same make that's 3, 6 or 10 years old? Just to see how likely they are to age well, if they were well supported, or if they even exist. I think Australians tend to expect a car to have a long life, and will expect a car to last.

John the kind of guy to believe that man (not the Sun and celestial events) changes Earth's climate, and that Apollo 11 was what it said on the tin 🤣 I was a Lance Armstrong fan for a while. Buying new cars doesn't make any financial sense. It's just a nice to have, but not financially clever, unless you're wealthy enough nowadays. I'm cheap, would rather buy a 6/7 year old Camry for halve the original price, while the car still has about 85% of its life left. Work smarter, not harder to pay for a stupid new car that will depreciate faster than you can ever imagine.
@jeremybean-hodges6397

Don’t know where you live, but in Aus it’s a lot closer to 70% of its original price right now, model depending, for a 2015 Camry. I do get your argument, and if money is the motivator then you are right (provided nothing goes catastrophically wrong because no warranty). But it’s the extra safety and comfort that people are buying.

Make a list not of what you want but what you need and maybe what you think you can’t do without. Dismiss any company that has awful after sales service, dismiss any company who have proven to have no morals, (looking at you VW) and the like. Because if they thought deliberately poisoning the world was a happy idea. Then it’s only a matter of time, before they’ll do something similar again. Include vehicles that do well what you’ll need 80% of the time. If the vehicle is cheaper than a Tory’s morals but it’s expensive to run, (inefficient motor/engine, parts hard to get and expensive when you can get them or have rip-off dealers. Then a cheap buy will turn into a money pit over the life of your ownership. Include the ones, that will save you money, while doing what needs doing, as opposed to costing you loads and seldom doing what you need. Don’t just read the good reviews, read the bad ones too. Especially those that show your included vehicle, have known problems, that either the manufacturer ignores or the dealers won’t fix. You can cross this off the list. Not every model year has a crap engine or suspension that breaks every 5,000mi/8,000km. Get to know which model year/s you can include and which ones you absolutely must avoid, (even if the dealer is offering you a seeming sweet deal). If the manufacturer gives a longterm warranty, it’s no good if dealers wriggle out of every warranty claim. Get it right and you’ll be happy. Get it wrong and you’ll be emptying your savings and unable to work every four days out of seven. Happy or sad, which do you want be?

(BSM) Blind Spot Monitoring (DAA) Driver Attention Alert (DSC) Dynamic Stability Control (EBD) Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBA) Emergency Brake Assist (ESS) Emergency Stop Signal (HLA) Hill Launch Assist (LDW) Lane Departure Warning (RPS) Parking sensors Rear (RCTA) Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCS) Reverse camera (SCBS) Smart City Brake Su’pport (TCS) Traction Control System (TSR) Traffic Sign Recognition (TPMS) Tyre Pressure Monitoring System … and change my mind.
