My father uses a truck's battery and pairs it with an inverter to produce electricity for our home during brownouts. It's cheaper, doesn't use diesel/gasoline, quiet, and we can just recharge it at home as soon as the electricity comes back. Though it is only used for very small loads it can definitely last especially during storm season in Samar.

Blackout vs Brownout A blackout is a complete interruption of power in a given service area. Rolling blackouts are controlled and usually preplanned interruptions of service. A brownout is a partial, temporary reduction in system voltage or total system capacity. But in the Philippines, everything is "brownout".

For those asking, Solar cannot replace Generators. Different systems entirely. Yes you can have battery powered solar but that is a whole rabbit hole . Solar Batteries must be kept in a very safe location, have to pe replaced after a few years (just like how cellphone batteries degrade over time), etc… Maybe a topic for another video👌🏼

@johnmarkgonzales87913 жыл бұрын
Hi, having a Solar Panel set up or Generator will both save you from a power outrage. Solar Panel will save you more money but you have to invest a huge amount of money at first. Solar Panel needs a storage area or room with a proper ventilation or an ACU for a better cooling for the batteries and Solar Panel controls. This must be installed and done by a licensed electrician and not a DIY job to avoid any disaster like fire or explosion. Must have a fire alarm or smoke detector and a CO2 fire extinguisher or Powder. Maintenance, just wipe your solar panel. Solar Panel is free from any fuel, as long as there's the sunlight, you're ready to go! More batteries, more power that can be use. For the Generator, a lot of them are now cheaper as people goes for Solar Panel. You need to buy Diesel fuel to run up your generator. Maintenance, every 250 hours or depends your generator supplier or manufacturer. You just need a space in your yard, proper shade and ventilation. Extend the muffler to avoid the exhaust smoke from coming back. A full internal fuel tank or large capacity external fuel tank.. then you're ready to go, nothing to worry about your load (appliances, etc). Don't forget to put fire extinguishers too! Hope I was able to help you with my simple explanation. Cheers mate! 🍻 -John
@yunelsonsr2 жыл бұрын
Solar Panels' lifespan will reach about 15 years. If you place the panels on your roof, consider also the maintenance of the roof which is about 5-6 years interval for repainting. Solar panel will only offset the cost of electricity via net metering. If you opt for Off-grid system you need to maintain and replace deep cycle batteries. Should you opt for Hybrid System which allows backup electricity when power grid is offline, be ready for added cost. In general, solar power is not maintenance free, and it is only suitable for heavy electricity consumption like in the case of office building, industrial/ factories, malls, etc. With inverter generators getting cheaper, if your aim is backup power go for this. If you aim electrical cost reduction, go for net metering. Just be aware that roofs needs to be maintained. Panels needs to be washed for peak efficiency.

Quick guide for you guys. Yes, you have to calculate the load that you're going to put in your generator. However, if you are planning to have an ATS, you are basically then calculating the load according to the size of your Main Circuit Breaker, of course you don't wanna have a larger size of main circuit breaker in your house (calculated during the construction of your house) and a lower size genset, you might overload your genset just incase. The genset must always run above 30% of its capacity so the engine can burn the fuel well to avoid the carbon clogging the injectors, white smoke and also to avoid the engine from consuming engine oil. Generators can be a single phase or 3-phase, as well as the ATS, it can be single phase or 3-phase. Typical electrical set up of a house in the Philippines must use a single phase generator (Standby rated) and ATS. Why KVA rating? KVA is a load mixture of real power and reactive power (ups, transformers, etc.) and used to rate generators as the manufacturers don't know exactly what will be the load to be connected to the genset. KW is a purely resistive load. Our house has different type of appliances or load, might have some resistive load or reactive load (capacitive/inductive load) reason why KVA is used to rate generators. Sample calculations for a single phase 15KVA generator that has a powerfactor of 0.8 (long story). 15KVA x 0.80 = 12KW. 15KVA is 15,000VA. 15,000VA ÷ 230 V = 65 Amps (maximum current you can use). For three phase, 15,000 VA ÷ 230 V = 65 Amps ÷ 1.732 = 37.60 Amps per phase. 1.732 is from the square root of 3 (long story). A 3-phase genset has a parallel wye connection in the main alternator and can be converted to a single phase via zigzag connection but with caution (long story). Genset is running in Auto-start operations due to the features of the controller, it may be a start signal input or AMF mode or auto-mains failure. In his video, the genset is using a start signal input (Smartgen controller) which a relay in the ATS is closing or opening a contact for that remote cable. It is more safely to test the ATS and genset by switching off your main circuit breaker rather than removing the fuses in the ATS. If you have inquiries about generators and ATS, kindly visit Powercity Corporation and look for Aileen Gonzales, my beautiful mom (my apologies for this part Slater mate 😀). And sorry if I missed some details, just a simple tech here. Comment down below if you have questions or technical inquiries. Hope this will help you guys! Cheers mate! 🍻 John, ex-Aggreko Technician

Typically, the live wires after the meter comes into a MCB then goes to your Panel Board's MCB to distribute. ATS has 3 terminals, Utility Power side (for your Meralco), Generator side and Load side. Just for a very quick and short guide: Remove that incomer live cables from your Panel Board and connect it to the ATS Utility Power side. Connect your genset power cable to the Generator side. Then the cable from the Load side of your ATS will now go to your Panel Board's MCB. You'll need to have a control cable, typically a 2.5mm2 5-core cable for your float battery charger AC supply and a Remote Start signal in your genset. Just leave an open space beside your Panel Board for the ATS installation. Try to visit Powercity Corporation and look for my mom, Aileen Gonzales, for Generator and ATS sales. Thank you very much mate!

If you have a Solar Power system, you have a limited power that you can use, depending on how large your power storage (battery capacity) is. However, if you have a Solar Power system plus a Diesel Generator, then you're in a Power God Mode, doesn't matter how long will be the power outrage hahahaha 😉 Solar Power is expensive nowadays. Have to invest a huge money for the set up, safety and future upgrades. Limited power capacity. But eco friendly as no exhaust smoke at all, no noise and free from buying fuel. Generators, cheaper nowadays. Easy maintenance, every 250 hrs or depends the engine specs. A small but open space will do in your backyard or rooftop. As long as you have Diesel fuel or Gasoline, ready to go! But you'll have a noise pollution and air pollution, specially if the engine is not environmental friendly. Don't forget the Powder or Co2 fire extinguishers too. Cheers mate!

Generator is the best choice for me.. As long as merong fuel yung generator, it can continuously run and back up your power for 3 weeks..Mas madali siyang e maintain kasi para lang siyang makina ng sasakyan.. Just place your Genset inside a sturdy, we'll ventilated and medyo elevated Genset House.. I cannot recommend using Solar Power dito sa atin because of frequent typhoons.. Typhoons may damage the solar panels.. Batteries are not reliable back-up lalo na pag matagal yung Power interruption like a week or so.. Madali masira at ang mamahal ng batteries, inverters, and controllers.. Kailangan din linisin from time to time yung solar panels sa roof which is very hustle..
