I would NEVER risk taking a trip without travel insurance. 👉 bit.ly/PortableProfessional-Insurance As a Canadian, something as simple as breaking an ankle in the US could cost 1000s. In the last few years I’ve had friends: ⚠️ Need rabies shots after being scratched by stray cats or monkeys ⚠️Be airlifted off a mountain with a broken leg, or from altitude sickness ⚠️Spend 6 weeks in a Thai hospital recovering from Dengue fever ⚠️Suffer 3rd-degree burns from a motorbike crash … I could go on… I strongly believe travel medical insurance is ESSENTIAL for every traveler, and it doesn’t have to be expensive! I saved $100s by switching to SafetyWing in 2019. Coverage starts at $1.32/day- less than your cup of coffee. 👉 bit.ly/PortableProfessional-Insurance

I spent an hour on the phone with someone at AIG. They are thorough and explain it all so well. A testament to the fact that if you NEED their help, they will answer the phone and know what to do. I got an annual policy pretty inexpensive. It does not cover the cost of the trip, that would be an extra 'rider' for just the trip, but it will cover interruption or baggage problems etc... with annual limits on those things. After having a friend go thru HELL to get home when she broke her arm on a cruise, I swore I would never travel again without the medical part, and since I travel almost every week for work, it's essential. My company pays for the travel expenses... but medical isn't covered.

For stolen items from baggage, sometimes it’s worth filling a claim with the airlines. I had to check my carryon when traveling internationally from MX back to the US and about $800 worth of electronics were stolen. I submitted a claim with receipts for the items and was reimbursed by the airline for everything. It took almost 8 weeks to get reimbursed though.

Great tip!! That must have been so frustrating to lose the gear, but amazing that the airline came through for you. Thanks for sharing!

I used to work for a roadside assistance dispatcher and our job was to ask leading questions to find any reason to deny coverage... The biggest thing to be aware of and ask about is whether the insurance company will do the booking planning and dispatching or if it's just one of those reimbursement types of insurance... My experience is that reimbursement type policies have many more caveat because they are after the fact and can deny coverage in a less emotionally-charged environment... Insurance is psychology... Fear of the unknown...

Thank you so much! I recently went to Paris, Rome, Florence, Venice, Prague and Vienna (different trips for most of them) all without travel insurance and I was always really worried. I was always just so overwhelmed with the different companies, etc. I'm about to leave for Spain (I live in CO) and I just signed up for 8 days of travel insurance for only $26! Thank you so much! hi, Thank you for sharing these details. I have checked this insurance, there are two items I do not like it. 1. If your spend less than &250, they do not compensation at all. 2. the most important of travellers are laptop, phone and other electronic, but if you missing them, the insurance doesn't do any compensation either. Do you know any other medical insurance? Thanks.

Thank you for your informative video. I recently went on an Antartica cruise and the trip was interrupted or delayed because of weather conditions (we had to wait until a storm passed before our charter flight would fly and had a 1 day delay and then we had to return half a day early in order to avoid a storm. I thought our credit card's trip interruption policy would cover it and filed a claim. My claim was denied because the trip interruption was due to "weather" and weather was not one of the allowed reasons they covered. What kind of insurance or credit card do you recommend that would cover this?
@karenlemmo85182 жыл бұрын
Hey. Everyone talks about being “covered”, and really means you have to pay for their service, and submit paperwork for reimbursement. Let people know this ! Someone may think just show their insurance card in Italy, & medical coverages is taken care of. Not true.
@deadcell12 жыл бұрын
Some countries don't require it but I get one anyways before I travel but if you request for a embassy letter through your insurance company, your insurance will send you documents verifying the insurance and that you are covered. You can just present this to the health physician and it acts like a health card. This allows for the health facility to directly invoice your insurance company. Without it you have to pay upfront and submit receipts to your insurance company yourself for reimbursement.

Please don't get the idea ones insurer will immediately pay things like medical bills! I was in Vietnam in November 22 and broke my primary arm in two places, which sent me home early. I was insured, but the hospital wouldn't accept anything other than cash or credit card (thankfully, Vietnam's medical care is affordable! X-rays, visit with physician, setting the arm, medications - and a free meal provided while waiting for the X-rays to develop! - $330!) Upon returning home, I had to file a Claim with my insurer. They then dragged their heels for nearly three months before paying it. Almost weekly I'd get emails asking for additional information. Just stalled as long as they could.

TORONTO - A group representing Canadians who spend part of the year in sunnier climes has filed a legal challenge against Ontario's decision to scrap out-of-country health insurance, saying the government's move violates the Canada Health Act. The Canadian Snowbird Association announced Thursday that it was seeking a judicial review of the changes, which came into effect on New Year's Day. "These cuts are an egregious violation of the portability requirement of the CHA and must be addressed head-on," association president Karen Huestis said in a written statement. The program covered out-of-country inpatient services up to $400 per day for higher level of care, and up to $50 per day for emergency outpatient and doctor services. Health Minister Christine Elliott announced last May that the government would cut the program, saying it was costly and did not provide value to taxpayers. The announcement followed a six-day public consultation. The snowbird association had previously said it was seeking an injunction, but spokesman Evan Rachovsky said that's still up in the air as they focus on the upcoming review, which has a court date set for June. He noted that the organization was founded on the issue of travel health insurance in the early 1990s, when the provinces were making cuts to the program. "Now the challenge is more pressing, because you're not talking about a reduction in benefits or a reduction in reimbursement rates, you're talking about the elimination of the program in its entirety," Rachovsky said. A spokeswoman for Elliott wouldn't comment on the case as it is before the courts, but noted that the program was largely ineffectual, paying out only five cents of every dollar claimed. "With this limited coverage and low reimbursement rate, OHIP-eligible Ontarians who do not purchase private travel health insurance can be left with catastrophically large bills to pay," Hayley Chazan said in an email. Elliott has previously said the province spent $2.8 million to administer approximately $9 million in claim payments through the program every year. In a July letter to Elliott, the federal government warned that scrapping the program could cost Ontarians. "If all publicly financed reimbursement of out-of-country physician and hospital services is eliminated, private health insurance premiums for travellers will inevitably rise for all Ontario residents," then-health minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor wrote. "Even modest increases could pose a hardship for some individuals." Provincial NDP health critic France Gelinas said the change means Ontario is the only province or territory that does not provide some basic health coverage to residents while they are outside Canada, even if it is a small amount. "There are so many people who will never be able to buy insurance," she said. "It's just not feasible or affordable for them. For them, that little wee bit of a guarantee was there and was meaningful." This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 2, 2020. -With files by Shawn Jeffords.
