When the rubber hits the road insurance can be a scam. The objective of these scammers (opinion) is to pay you as little as possible or not at all. It is difficult to see a sense of transparency in a 43 page insurance contract where all the "by the way" clauses are buried in non fine print. Be careful.

Totally agree! You can dispute cc charges if they are fraudulent. We had issues in Italy Dec 2019. Our rental car kept charging us for traffic tickets, fraudulent parking violations, damage and gas replacement. Mind you we went Christmas 2019 and we just received another charge (or attempt because we canceled the cc and got replacement) last month. That is a year and a half after the fact. So charge cards can save your bacon.

I work for a travel insurance for the most part everything was good, but some plans have early purchases benefits for pre-existing condition, but our definition of pre ex isn’t going to be as strict as what a doctor would say. Also usually insurance is cheaper the closer you get towards your trip.

Good advice. I have always steered away from travel insurance that is sold by the carriers - air, rail, water. I prefer to purchase mine from a reputable insurance company. Also, read the exclusions before you buy. This is the fine print of the policy. You need to know what the insurance will NOT cover. Often, AMEX will cover liability on the car you rent. However, you must decline the CDW at the time you rent for this to take place. As you said, often you will have to pay on the spot and the insurance company will reimburse after the trip.
@HR-wd6cwАй бұрын
I just got travel insurance for a recent trip I took overseas. Read the policy. If you're not traveling out of your home country, then chances are you may not need things like medical insurance (for example, if you're in the US and you are traveling to another US destination, and you have PPO insurance, then I would maybe skip the medical insurance, but perhaps still at least get the other insurance not related to medical needs, such as trip interruption or lost baggage, etc, because those things can still happen regardless of where you're going). Also call your medial insurance provider. I found out that mine will cover injury in other countries (depending on the country and the situation) but I would have to pay up front and they would reimburse me, so it depends on the level of risk you want to take. But I opted to get medical insurance included since I was going overseas for that trip and had heard that since I was NOT an citizen from an EU country, upfront costs could be high, like in the thousands) The trip medical insurance set my deductibles to a much lower amount like $500 or $1000 in most cases. So for the $125 it gave me peace of mind. I would say maybe DON"T buy the travel insurance that some are offered after booking a hotel or plane ticket as they may not be the best deals. I generally book things separately (and don't use a travel agent). It takes a bit more time but it allows me to shop around for all components of my trip (hotels, airfare, insurance, transportation etc).
@tosht25153 жыл бұрын
*PEACE OF MIND* @11:38 I’ve purchased travel medical insurance for every single trip outside the U.S. and have never once had to use it or make any claims. HOWEVER the personal *peace of mind* is well worth it to me. *Excellent advice as always, Mark.*

I really wish I had more research about car rental insurance before I went on a solo road trip this past summer. I ended up buying car insurance at the counter at Hertz to cover my rental which ended up being more expensive than the subtotal of my online reservation. I chose the pay now option when reserving the rental online and it was around $574 whereas my insurance racked up to $734 (taxes + fees included) since the insurance add-ons were apparantly charged BY THE DAY, and I rented the car for ten days. This trip in itself was done thanks to planning I've done beforehand and I had a feeling I would not get everything perfect. I just turned 23 and it was the first time I've done anything like this, so even though I feel ripped off about the insurance thing I'm glad I got to experience the trip. Next time I might look into buying insurance from third parties rather than directly from the car rental company.

I may be mistaken but I don't believe any travel policy covers required testing. I learned recently in Albania that any testing during travel may have conflicting requirements. But the burden is always on the traveler. You pay for a test but at the airport, it's rare that any employee even looks at your results! You just sign off as being tested and on your way... The main point: even if you are vaccinated, expect a test requirement. Expect to pay for this yourself. Expect to pay anywhere from 25 to 100 dollars per person out of your own pocket. Also--not every airport has a testing center and some that do, may not be open when you need it. So you will be on your own for this to be done. I think it would be a great help if someone would direct people in this matter as travel resumes.

Amex has a policy, at least the used to, that you could sign up for that if you used the card to rent a car in most countries, they would charge $25 or $35 and it would also cover loss of use in addition to their rental car coverage. This can be quite expensive and subjective on the rental companies part. How much they could have rented the vehicle for while being repaired or replaced. It had a limited time frame per rental.

I just booked a trip to Spain for September and purchased John Hancock Silver plan travel insurance. What sold me was reading that it covers if you have to quarantine. As of now, you have to show a negative Covid test before returning back to the USA. If you test positive, you will need to quarantine for 14 days in country before flying back, which can be extremely expensive. Make sure the policy covers if you have to quarantine while abroad.
