I disagree with the volume difference between 4 and 2 stroke mowers, my loudest ones are 4 stroke and my quieter ones are 2 strokes. It depends on the brand and age of the mower though. My newer 2 strokes are louder than my older ones.

@TheNubianDiary I'm sure power plays a part in it, too. My 6.5 hp duraforce is around 20 to 30 years newer, and 2 more horsepower, and much much louder. It's the only equipment other than weedeaters that I feel the need to wear ear protection.
