At about 4:08 I say "circle jumping" instead of "strafe jumping." Apologies for the error.

Could you please edit this pinned comment to let people know that the movement system was slowed down and that 640 is not a reachable goal anymore. thank you for making this video, it really helped me.

+Soliton FPV this is exactly what happened to me haha. At first I thought I couldn't do it properly because I was noticeably speeding up but getting nowhere near 640 onscreen and I thought to myself: "I bet they patched it to be slower at some point between this video and me starting playing". So thanks!

Fun fact, strafe jumping was originally a glitch that was adopted as a gameplay mechanic. The reason CounterStrike has strafe jumping, is because the original CS was built on a modified Quake engine.

Yeah, if you look at this with realism in mind, it becomes clear that it evolved from players exploiting some janky physics. Skiing in the Tribes games is a similar case.
@darymetal

It's interesting like most techs in classic video games were exploits/glitches, but it also makes sense if you think about it. Combos were an error in SF 2, Strafe jumping was an error of Quake's engine vectoring, wavedashing was an exploit of Super Smash Bros Melee.....who knows how many more examples of this are out there. So many mechanics were born from players pushing the limits of games. It is basically the whole premise of speedruns lol

This is a very nice guide for beginners to get a grip on quake movement system! I'll just add a few notes about practical applications for those who wants to get more into the topic: 1. The most common switching patterns of full-beat strafe jumping are single and double beat, which means that you change the direction you look every one or two jumps. It helps you to keep your way more or less straight (if you need it to be straight of course). 2. While full-beat is easier to understand, another technique called "half-beat" requires much less mouse movements to increase your speed and maintain the straight path. A lot of pro players prefer using half-beat instead of full-beat. I hope FrothyOmen'll make a video about it some day. 3. You can get around 500ups with one well-executed circle-jump, so this is quite important technique. But in order to do so you must move your mouse at the right speed. If you move it too fast or too slow, you can lose all the momentum. Trick jumps like "bridge to rail" or "nyx walljump across the central pit" on Blood covenant map are good examples of drills for circle jumping.
@puppycasey8883
@puppycasey8883 6 жыл бұрын
LarryHWK can you go through step by step what a circle jump requires? This is what I am trying (to no avail). Click forward and right, turn the mouse 90 degrees and jump. It doesnt do much. Why is circle jumping such a mystery? Why cant someone just make a list of buttons and movements?
@CorrosiveCitrus
@CorrosiveCitrus 6 жыл бұрын
You want to run in an arc on the ground by holding Forwards and Right and turning your character smoothly by moving your mouse to the right (where the circle part of the name comes in) this gives you the speed boost, you then jump to maintain that speed (there is no friction in the air so you don't slow down) Imagine a small circle on the floor, and try to run along it, it's important to keep your mouse movements smooth, you're not trying to instantly turn 90 degrees, you're trying to run in a tight arc to gain speed.

so I just started playing Quake Champions after the free weekend, and I have such an odd sensation playing it. I'm a reasonably experienced tf2 player ("only" 900 hours + about that much watching more experienced players and learning from them), so Quake makes me feel this strange blend of novelty, and nostalgia. Team Fortress started as a quake mod, and so much of it's design was clearly borrowed from quake. soldier, my most played class, has a rocket launcher that feels identical to the one in quake champions, (just with harsher damage fall off mechanics), and I use a reskin of the base rocket launcher called the original that looks and sounds like the rocket launcher from quake 1. on top of that, the design of the maps, and the need to fight over power ups reminds me of playing games like halo, perfect dark, and time splitters in middle school, so while I've only just started to touch this game, and everything is new and shiny, I also feel like I've been playing it my entire life, it's so weird... but I love it :) also, the movement in this game is WAAAY different from the air-strafing I'm used to in tf2 and source engine games, so I'm really glad I found these videos!
@quadconjures
@quadconjures 6 жыл бұрын
Airstrafing is just a subset, it's actually emulated on some specific champions like sorlag, who works like tf2 airstrafing except with fatty hops. Other mods and derivatives of quake emphasized different movement techniques and methods, and most of them have a couple of champions in qc who use those techniques.
@TheSonicShoe
@TheSonicShoe 6 жыл бұрын
alphagamer774 yeah, I watched his sorlag tutorial right after making this comment, and she's a bit more like what I'm used to. I just wish they had a champion with air strafing, and ranger's self damage reduction combined. Rocket jumping regularly as anarki is suicide, and only marginally better on sorlag thanks to her extra armor, but you can't get away with it as much as ranger does, which sucks for me because he can't airstrafe :( Still love the game though, and fortunately strafe jumping provides enough mobility for free as ANY character, so I don't feel like I'm really missing out.

Hands down the best guide, finally someone that has actual knowledge of why strafe jumps exists, and what causes it. Still, i wish there was a little example of other strafe jumps styles, and mention of edge clipping. For those unaware, once reached a certain speed you can clip through edges, allowing you to use tight trajectories.

Nah, there weren't any bots in the games according to the stats page. I'm assuming it was just MMR at work because until I played X amount of games and restarted, I kept getting paired up with more new/lower skilled players compared to the matches now. Despite the low population, I've only had bots in my game twice I believe. The system behaved as it should, though and I'm happy. It was better to get a wake up call sooner than later.

For circle jumps, most of the time a sixth of a circle is enough if you do a fast enough of a swipe while on the ground. For circle jumping you want some hard, large quick swipes when when you actually are strafe jumping you want to make smooth, small and slow swipes.

Managed to get most mechanics down easily enough, got a quick question though. Is it possible to change direction after you built up speed strafe jumping? I know in a game like counter strike it's easy, but in QC I'm having troubles doing it. I always seem to keep my forward momentum and am unable to turn fluidly with it.
@SleepyRickyC92

Only with certain champions to my knowledge. I believe Sorlag and Anarki are the only two who have ways to modify direction in air without losing speed. You might want to look into Sorlag. Her jump keeps momentum even if you release w in air, as long as your mouse and keyboard is going in the same direction.

If this is implemented like Quake2, the reason strafe jumping lets you accelerate while turning is because they cap the velocity by doing a dot product with your new direction and your current velocity. This is like capping your velocity against a flat wall (aka a plane). If you aim a little to the left or right along that flat wall, you can accelerate just a bit more and reach a higher velocity, and the next frame that "wall" will be a bit further away and adjusted to your new aim direction. Seems Quake Champions has an additional speed cap on top of that.

This is a super excellent guide. I have never played an arena shooter or quake at all in my life. So much of this game is super foreign to me. The circle jump seemed to come pretty natural but the strafe jumping was hard to learn and get used to and I'm actually still kind of bad it. This was the most helpful video I found on it so great work. Also, I get wrecked every match due to various deficiencies in my skill set but I have so much fun everytime. I'm still working on not bonking corners but I notice with strafe jumping and circle jumping I am better with item control in casual games (DM, TDM) like mega and armor than almost everyone i'm playing with in those games (low mmr i'm sure). Just wanted to say thank you again. There's a lot of videos on this but this is one that taught me. Time to spam your rocket jump/nail climb video next I guess :P

Something Good They keep it on purpose because it is a key mechanic to the series now. Basically every game developed under the idtech 3 engine and modifications of that has strafejumping in it because of how the engine works (RttCw, Jedi Knight 2 and 3, Urban Terror, quake 3 arena, Enemy Territory, Star Trek Elite Force 2,Warsow, Painkiller, OpenArena- all of these have strafe jumping and probably more). Call of Duty 1 2 and 4 are also based on a modified idtech3 and they had to get rid of strafe jumping by introducing a delay after which you can jump again. You can still increase speed in means of a dingle jump in call of duty. Now they could have patched out strafe jumping in a quake 3 patch and of course they could zave fixed it in quake 4 and quale champions, vut they didnt. It is because it adds complexity and velocity to the game and the community likes it.
@Pejje85

Strafe jumping as well as double-jump was first discovered as a bug in Quake 2. Everyone liked the bug so it never got fixed. The circle jumping or "U-jump" however has been around since the dawn of Quake 1 but i think that its a bit different nowadays. Check out some old videos of quake 1 U-jump and you'll know what i mean. Quake games has allways been the top of the hill tbh. Although they seem to get worse with every new one sadly. The 2nd one is the best then the first one and then the third and then this one, the fourth was a joke tbh. Except for the singleplayer part that was pretty good.

That's interesting, this circle jump mechanic is really just a momentum mechanic, almost... when you look in that direction you kind of throw your weight in that direction as well. That's pretty awesome.

The best part about strafe jumping is that it was originally introduced into q1 by mistake when quakeworld was released. It was a bug.

Thanks for your tutorials. I learned to strafe jump back in 1998 on Quake 2but I don't think I could've explained it very well to someone. I don't think I ever did the circle jump, if I did it was unconsciously.

my method of picking up speed (in quake 3 especially) is I don’t have to worry about strafing or circling like you basically showed and explainedat the very end. What I do is when I’m moving forward I jump then the second I hit the floor I jump again and so on. Basically I do the basic bunny hop that majority of quake players use

Bunny hopping with no mouse movement is strictly worse than walking on the ground

like always, awesome job frothy. This video is a perfect example why I love your guides. whether its quake, tf1 tf2, or any other game, you always make your guides like : assuming this the first time you play a video game ever, here is what you need to know to learn this awesome cool thing. and then you list everything so that even the guy who's missing a little crucial thing to be perfect at it can just pick it up from you video.

When suddenly you need to run on curve or turn you can do a half beat stop but continue circle jumping so you won't loose your momentum.

Just got the game for free from the E3 thingy and damn, it significantly improved my mobility. About the circle jump tho, probably my best way of interpreting the technique is move to form a letter J or do a simple whip with strafe jumping

Just to add to this; when you jump, release the jump key and immediately press it again whilst you're in the air, but hold it down until you land and you'll jump again as soon as you land. Then release it, hold again before you land, etc.

The way other channels taught it was too move your mouse side to side while strafing. You describe it better saying that you need to be continuously turning while strafing.

I feel like this mechanic originated from some coder fucking up at physics programming in the 90's and then it just sort of stuck and became an industry standard in these types of games.

Yeah it kinda sucks that you have to pay for the custom game since the game already has a lootbox system to generate revenues, but if you really like the game the champions pack upgrade isn't so bad. You do unlock all the champions which would take forever if you played it for free IMO

i like the game but i dont and wont spend money on it, honestly the playerbase is kinda dead or just in zombie mod, this game should go f2p or be sold for $10 at the very most, i literally dont get people in the game to play with, Matchmaking takes a bit long for comfort
