Sweet! Already sent this to my friends. Great job as always. I do have a couple of things to add, however. 1) A tip for mastering CPMA movement is incorporating the normal q3a style of movement. Because CPMA characters typically have a lot more acceleration, doing a circle jump is even more effective for these types of characters. 2) When you started talking about the thing where CPMA characters can get to their speed cap without ever holding forward, regular characters can do this too with different than normal strafe jumping techniques (Though it's fairly irrelevant and a bit advanced.) Just a couple of minor things. Can't wait to see what you'll post in the future. c;

Thank you so much for doing this. These are the lessons I have been dying to learn, but never had the time or the skill to learn myself. I can bunny hop with Sorlag around the 500 mark, but never got higher. I knew Rocket Jumping played a part, but never understood how. Your video has shown me something I was missing greatly. I am really looking forward to more videos. My intention is to really learn the mechanics of the game and improve as a player. These have all been a big help, thanks again :-)

Good news, I've been getting between 800-1100 in UPS using the Rocket Launcher to encourage extra speed. My question though, apart from the Acid Spit, is how the extra speed will benefit Sorlag? I'm finding aiming very difficult when moving at high speed and obviously Sorlag is a bit of a fodder magnet due to her size. I've got her moving around Burial Ground pretty well trying to get her to cross the chasm (sometimes the rocket jump fails and I end up taking a one-way ticket to the bottom), but I have managed to get her through the portal to Quad and use Acid Spit on the awaiting victims.

*AND ALL THE TF2 PLAYERS REJOICED!* I just commented on a different video about how different the movement in this game is from tf2, and all the while sorlag had the movement I was looking for! I just hope this is still relevant after 4 months worth of patches... her passive insists that she only gains movement speed while bunnyhopping without changing direction, so I'll have to give this a shot and make sure it's still a thing, but I'm really hoping to get those glorious snaking rocket jumps I'm so used to from hundreds of hours playing soldier!

Thats interesting. I'm from cs and can do this movement 8 times fold over the normal "full beat" movement due to me knowing air strafing from cs (playing csgo surf and kz). The reason being this is Quake 1 movement and the original gold source engine is from quake 1 (and is still in normal source). Tl:dr: He must not be good at movement in cs also is what I'm saying.

One thing I'd like to point out is that if you can't do the full movement you can just move your mouse and hold W, as was mentioned, but also you can still corner tightly by switching to hold the direction and turning the mouse without W, and then going back to W for straights. It's almost as effective as the full deal and far easier.

Additional info: it's actually possible to airstrafe in quake 1, stage jumping was introduced in quake 2 supposedly while Id tried to remove airstrafing .

Very helpful stuff as always, man. I've found it much easier to just take advantage of the bunny hop while holding W, though. Letting go of W makes it so you can only gain speed by turning your mouse to the same direction as you strafe, but holding W affords you the same amount of air control by just turning your mouse and makes you gain speed automatically without having to turn your mouse. Is there any reason not to hold W, now? I understand the constant patches make it inevitable that some guides become obsolete quickly. I also think theyREALLY need to clearly state the movement styles and capabilities of each champion. Many abilities, like Sorlag's air control, are either not stated or incorrectly stated or they expect the player to imply them from another ability.

Good tutorial, but one clarification: AirControl mentioned here is not something that CPMA introduced, CPMA was only incarnation of CPM, which was also mod. All started early, when "death row", Dennis Wong and few others were big names.

The speed cap for Sorlag is now 720. And crouch hopping is still a thing, allowing you to reduce your hitbox size and fit smaller holes when escaping. Brood Mother said there will be days like this. (here's a small demo of me circling around Burial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYnIaGt9a7-retk)

3.12.18 just checked that sorlag speed thing by using only W+mouse turning.still Works,wont be as fast as with strafing or cprm,tho its still nice 520 ups,but on the other hand it let me to rebind first 5 weapons to a,d,y(for US it will be z),x,c (crouch walking i reduced to its other option,also removed numeric options from all the weapons,helped a bunch at least til i will get used to not put my fingers on numerics)

They've made Clutch very newb-friendly now but I feel like there is a bit of mastery to achieve. It seems like some or all champions have a boost to maintain speed when changing direction. It's almost like a very weak version of Warsow's dash.

Hey @Frothy I'm brand new to quake as of a month ago, and i play against bots alot and i've always noticed that Sorlag bots move everywhere with their body sideways, jumping sideways and i've never understood why or how but now this makes sense. I don't understand the physics behind these systems. To maintain speed but change direction, a force must apply exactly tangential to your vector at all times. (this is called centripetal force) Yet when you hold jump and left, your direction doesn't change. This tells me that holding left does not apply a force to your character at all. Then why does it turn you if you turn the mouse? I guess it only applies force while you are turning the camera. I don't get the physics behind the ranger movement either. What is the fundamental difference between air control where you hold both forward and a lateral direction, vs air control where you only hold a lateral direction. I never understood how you could accelerate in titanfall, it makes no sense to accelerate with a lateral force from a physics perspective. What am I missing? I'm trying to get an intuitive understanding of the underlying mechanics that cause this to work the way it works, but I'm puzzled for now.

In original CPM movement you would accelerate more when doing diagonal input strafes and hitting the acceleration zones rather than straight left and right strafes. Is the same not true in QC? It's probably not a big deal anyway considering the low speed caps but still a thought to consider.

If you're building up speed, it's better to use the forward/backward and a strafe key. The movement is basically PQL which is slightly different than CPM, which is nearly CPMA.

did anarki's downside with that loss of momentum has changed ? because I didn't quite notice it when playing him, but he's not my main and I still strafe-jump in a sort of normal way with him even though I noticed the movement potential he has in addition to his speed. I honestly just learned about this technique from CPMA, and now I'll definitely try Sorlag lol

How much airacceleration (in cs games) would sorlag equal to? Do I have to do wide slow strafes or can i do 8-10 strafes without losing speed?

You can strafe forever while gaining speed, there isn't a number of bhops where you start to trail off. You can make rather tight turns, but there is a limit where you will in fact decelerate a lot if you go too tight.

So with this type of movement, the only benefit it gives over the movement the other characters use where you also hold forward is that it gives you more control in the air without losing speed; is that correct? Also, if you were to try and use CPM movement on the characters that aren't the lizard or hoverboard guy, what would happen?

You're correct in the first part. If you do it on other characters, nothing will really happen. They aren't coded to move that way and you'll sort of just flail.

The first champ I was gonna buy was doom slayer but after seeing this I am 100% buying one of these characters because most of my life I have played counterstrike and original quake 1 and half life and if these characters movements are anything like counter strikes with its bunny hopping then I believe I am going to dominate because I have around 3k hours on cs and bunny hopping maps took up about 1k hours out of the 3k I've played, I still haven't quite mastered it but I am pretty confident in my abilities with bunny hopping, but just to make sure, these characters you're showing us in the video with their movements, is that essentially the same as bhopping in counter strike, quake 1, and half life? I just want to make sure because I don't really want to waste my money if they aren't the same as bhopping in cs and quake 1 and half life

why didn't you tell that they can gain constant speed over 1100ups with rj? Or that Solrag can get increased momentum and jump distance on jp if combined with crouch? The 1st one is one of the main reason why Sorlag is picked by pros.

+Konstantin Otrembsky I showed getting to nearly 1k in the opening clip and crouch accel is being patched out. Crouch accel is also not a CPMA movement mechanic.

lmao this is the easiest one. If you know how to bhop in Quake 1 or in half-life it is not difficult at all
