Thanks so much for this. It costs us around $120 to get our chimney cleaned. We do it yearly. I might consider DIY-ing it next time. I can feel hubby rolling his eyes ... 😁

Don’t forget that in the UK, for insurance, flues should be cleaned annually by a professional who gives you the required certificate for insurance purposes after the job has been done.

How would clean an L shape chimney piping that runs into my house? Would I disassemble that part, since that straight part that it then changes into as it goes out onto the roof would leave the soot situated in that part of the pipe?
@DIYOnTheHouse

Yes, you would have to disassemble that part.

I just purchased a home with a wood burning fireplace. The local prices are $250 for a sweep with an extra $100 for an inspection! Very unexpected. Needless to say, I am absolutely going to to do this myself. As this this will only need to be yearly (not the main source of heat with only oak burned) this video is quite educational! The pipe coming out of the roof extends about 10 ft. Any last bits of advice before I tackle this? I'll post a video of the process. :)

Wow 10' Be super careful, it does take some force to sweep. I don't blame you for DIY, that's a chunk of change!

Definitely have it evaluated by a CSIA certified sweep at least for the first time.

@@calvinhobbes6646 good advice. 👍 As it turns out, it was inspected and cleaned prior to purchase.
