In today's video, i'm going to share how to clean a Dyson animal cyclone. The steps are very simple and require one tool. This is not a full disassemble of the entire cyclone but it will definitely do the trick to help remove hidden dust and debris inside the cyclone. The demonstration is being performed using a DC66 Upright Ball Animal Vacuum.

I called DYSON a few years ago. They deny that the inner parts can be cleaned-- yet I can SEE all that dust built up in there. Anyway, every three months, I've gotten to the first part of getting the cyclone out of the clear plastic bin, washing it with water, and letting it dry. LOTS of clumps of dirt and dust came out. Now, perhaps I will go the full route based on your instructions. (My 5 year warranty ended this year.) Thanks for the lessons.

I cannot thank you enough for this video. I had no idea that one could even clean the inside of a vacuum and turns out it is the cyclone giving off odor. So easy to follow your instructions and I am not a handy or coordinated person.

Holy cow! Your videos are very thorough and easy to follow. Had no idea there were this many parts to clean. I think you even said this wasn't a full disassemble which means there's more steps for a full cyclone clean!?!

Thank you! I used to prefer bagged vacuums because all this mess didn’t seem worth it, but my Dyson D65 Animal is a real beast - best vacuum I’ve ever owned. It’s worth it to me to go through this process, and I’m not constantly looking for the bags when I need them most.

You’re welcome! I also prefer bagless vacuums. My previous vacuum used a filter I needed to replace every 6 months. It was such a pain to find one. I like the fact the filter in the Dyson can be washed. Thanks for watching.

On balance I'd say you do less damage to the cyclone by flushing it with water and letting it dry completely than taking a flathead screwdriver and prying it open. You can probably only do that about 10 times before you're going to snap one of the ports. On the other hand if you flush it with water, you can just place it over one of your heater vents in your house and it will be dry within the day. For what it's worth, I've been doing this for a while now and it hasn't caused me any problems yet! Your mileage may vary, of course. 😃

Thanks for helping me work up the courage to pry open the cyclone. However, I couldn’t imagine getting into the cyclone piece and not running hot water through it till the water runs clean (the inside of it is where the dust really is). It’s just a piece of plastic… Did the same with the screen part in there and sprayed with pinesol and wiped down afterwards. The only piece I don’t use water on is the roller piece that always needs hair cut out of it. Has electrical components so I play it safe and just spray the pinesol on that part.

You’re welcome! It took me a bit of time to take the plunge and open the cyclone but I’m glad I did. It was very satisfying to clean the built up dust lingering inside the cyclone. I didn’t realize how much dust is hiding inside. Thanks for watching!

Dyson actually recommends using COLD water so that your rubber seals don't stretch or crack. Saw that on a more in depth video today. Cold water is absolutely safe and should clean it a bit more than a cloth and brush. Of course just make sure it's dry before putting it back together. But since your not dealing with any fabric that shouldn't take long.

It is all washable opening and closing the tabs will wear off soon. Wait till it’s summer wash the whole thing with a hose. What you have done is good if it’s really badly caked up with dust.

Thank you so much! Folks that very likely have a shop vac if you own that, use the brush attachment and switch to blower mode for the rest outside.... It'll turn this into 5 minutes messless affair instead (This video is cut down).

I can't stand when vacuums are dirty. I take ours apart and wash these with hot soapy water. We leave the components to air dry. I have another canister to swap out for the dirty one. It seems a bit extreme but we have 2 Belgian Malinois.

I saw another saying to use cold water because hot will stretch and crack any seals. Unless you remove them of course. But apparently the entire thing is "supposed" to be washed with cold.

Well...Many people criticize vacuum cleaners with a water filter, but in the end you still wash any vacuum cleaner with water to give it a good clean. but when you wash the canister of a vacuum cleaner with a water filter, you are not breathing dust.

This is exactly why I prefer a nice bagged vacuum. Don't want to mess with all that. My Miele stays clean and I don't have to spread all that dirt or breath it when I empty it.

@@ashton583 depending on how much you want to spend but id say Sebo, Miele, or Riccar. On the low end a hoover bagged model or an oreck.

Imo this really isn't difficult. But to each their own I guess. I like that this one comes apart so easily so that you actually CAN deep clean it all.

This is the method that I have been using for years without any problems : I remove the inside filter and wash it with water , take the hole cyclone outside and wash it with the water hose (or run your tub water inside if you want to wash it using warm water) wash everything and let it dry overnight. Next morning put everything back together and Voila! Using your method with time the plastic will brake and replacing parts form Dyson is almost as expensive as buying a new machine. Sorry I don't recommend your smelly and dangerous method of disassembling the entire cyclone.
