You are my new hero. Living circumstances recently changed and I'm in a position to fulfill my childhood dream of owning a horse. Until I was nine, I lived on the back of any horse I could find. Before dark my family would call neighbors to find me. We moved out of town. Until I was seventeen, I would look for any opportunity to ride. Most of the time bareback. I've never saddled a horse. Or had formal training. But I connect with them. Now I'm 56 and all but one person is telling me this is a bad idea. Too expensive. Not strong enough. Not educated. It was driving me crazy until I found your videos. I know i can do this. I've bought a home with land and an existing corral. You are amazing. Thank you so much.

DO IT !!!! ❤❤❤❤ don't let the time come where you're ready to leave this lifetime and you never did it. I can relate in so many ways to your story. It took years to even get my first horse. I earned her working for her on a ranch and was the only one in my family that was in to them. I had a few horses over a handful of years or so. But it's been years now. Im a busy single mom n keep trying to think of ways to afford one again. You're already on your own land.. WITH A CORRAL. From one horse lover to another.. if you don't do it... your soul and I will be disappointed 😆 lol

I do stalls similar to this too. Another tip is after cleaning the pee when you are sweeping is sweep all the old bedding and dirt into the spot where the horse pees the most , that way the old shavings will be used for that and lifted the next time you clean. sift an rake the looser cleaner top layer off and spread that bedding around the rest of the stall and sprinkle some clean shavings over the top of the old to freshen it and the area near the food and water. if you keep moving the old shaving into one area and away from the food you may be able train the horse to use the one area.

My horses have an open run-in shed. One thing i would suggest- wear a mask when working with dirt/shavings in a stall. My asthma was diagnosed after cleaning the stall. Didnt know i had it til then.

The only thing I don't see here mentioned is that if horses are out 24/7 then it is not good for them to be eating grass 24/7 and it should be fenced off from the main pasture or they get very fat and they can get laminitis and the sugar in the grasses can cause insulin resistance and you can look at their ankles and see the swelling. My friends have for beautiful horses and where the main Barn is when we bring them in that pasture is fenced off from from the main fields since and since we give them hay and feed they don't need to be eating grass 24/7 it is just not good for them.

It's really up to you, it doesn't really harm the horses in s shall, but it's also not the best for them as they have no way to release any energy. It's really personal opinion. Personally, I think a really thick warm blanket and out 24/7 but it really depends. Good luck!

Studies show horses prefer straw bedding and are stressed by shavings and pellet bedding. I prefer pellet bedding but i give them a top layer of straw to make it inviting for them to lie down.

What kind of mats do you use in the stalls? You said they absorb the horse's pee? That would be so helpful in our barn!
@skyellewelyn3275 Жыл бұрын
the stable i go to frequently turns horses out during the day and brings them in at night, except for 2 horses that have a shelter outside, and one horse that has basically constant access to his personal paddock. our area has a lot of predators and the paddocks are just fences basically, so there's no protection for them. they also get fed in the stables bc they all have different dietary needs and need different supplements so its easier to just feed them in the barn

I think most people don't pay enough respect to equestrians for going through all the troubles on a regular basis. Also my horse lives outside from 6 AM to around 8 PM where I bring them inside because sometimes where I live there can be a lot of thunder during the night. Not always, but my friend once had a horse that was almost hit by lightening, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.
