I’m cleaning my western saddle that I haven’t used in 40 years but I did have it completely restored and then stored in my parent’s basement where it started to mildew. Now I have just bought a 40,000 acre ranch in south west Texas, and I don’t want a four wheeler to patrol/ survey the ranch. I have never tried an English saddle I just always hopped on bare back and rode back to the barn to saddle up, or went without for my daily ride. I’m the type of person that if I want to disappear on my own property for a few days or weeks and not be bothered I will just me my horse and a rifle or two. If my presents is required try smoke signals I will investigate smoke. Good tips on cleaning I was just going to use saddle soap. And after it dries out Neatsfoot oil.

I cleaned a bunch of saddles for the first time at the barn this week, I did not see this video yet, however next week bridles are on the list and I shall take these tips to it. I currently ride western, I’ve only been riding a little more than 6 months so I’ve been trying to get the foundations down. I am hoping to try English in the future though I am pretty happy where I am and I’m glad I started with western since I’ve had a injury that’s forced me to do quite a bit of single reining and the lesson horse I ride did cattle cutting so he’s well accustomed to it.

I got a new horse and I need to know how to measure her for a good saddle. Do you have any tips or tricks? I prefer a english Saddle. Also loved the video it was very helpful!
@CarmellaAbel4 жыл бұрын
The best way to see how a saddle fits is by putting it on the horse. I’ve found saddles that are the exact measurements I needed, but just didn’t sit right. People will usually let you do saddle trials where you can put the saddle on your horse and see how it fits. Read up on fitting the gullet and the length of the saddle. If these measurements are off, they can do serious damage to the horse. Let me know if this helps!

Some Professional tips - We will straight up use a pressure washer on a dirty saddle. People have been taught to be afraid of moisture and I was too, but with enough time to dry in a not humid place it won't mold. We take the conchos off, leather strings off, all billets, latigos, and so on. We use Murphy's Oil soap on saddles - the same stuff you use on floors - original formula only, don't ask me why but it works or the basic glycerin saddle soap and nothing else. No combined products or other cleaners. Depending on the saddle's moisture condition we will either add a layer or two of neatsfoot oil - only Neatsfoot Oil - No "Compound" and this is let to sit overnight at least. Each of these steps takes a day as the saddle needs to full dry from washing, soak up any oil, and then soak in the moisturizer. Wipe away any excess oil after the oil has enough time to soak in, usually overnight. You can over oil in high humidity climates where tack may become moldy. Oil softens the leather and you don't want "floppy" leather tack. If the leather is nice and flexible then it may not need oil. Lastly we put a moisturizer on - Some like Blackrock and others prefer other moisturizer brands, but this is where the shine and buffing comes in as after the saddle sits overnight you go and buff off any excess product so the saddle is very shiny. Each part removed is done individually in the same products and same steps. We do oil the undersides of western tack - the leather you would find "rough" on fenders, latigos, billet straps, etc., but suede seats and rough out saddles take a different kind of love. We put all pieces back on the saddle and we know they are not only safe, but very clean and moisturized and this will keep those saddles for years and years to come. - ******if you have LIGHT LEATHER TACK then doing any of this may darken your saddle and you should seek professional help ONLY!!!!**************** - All of these same steps are done with bridles, breast collars, and anything leather that can be cleaned. Take them Apart!! and put them back together. You want to see how the hole is where you normally have it as that is where it normally breaks or wears the most.
