I've always cleaned cables using an antibacterial wipe, wrapping it around the cable and dragging. Similar to what you did with the sponge. Your way'll definitely get it whiter. Nice video!

Thank you so much! As a matter of interest are the wipes alcohol based? I'm trying to figure out if the alcohol will accelerate desiccation of the rubber in the cables or if its safe to use - gunna run some tests I think :P

@@CleaningHowTo i think using alcohol based wipes gently wont effect the rubber or the cable.

@@CleaningHowTo I’m not sure if they will degrade the rubber tbh, but I don’t do that very often. Maybe once every 6 months or so. So for me, I wouldn’t worry too much about that aspect. If I was cleaning them more regularly I think a non-alcohol based solution would be better. My go to surface cleaner is a homemade diluted white vinegar spray, I could use that I suppose.

Don’t clamp and pull the cable while holding the charger, do a small section near the charger by hand, then hold the cleaned section and you can clamp and pull the cable with no fear of damaging the connections inside the charger.

your method worked great on the mains plug end (thicker cable with the mains plug on it) but I just couldn't get the yellow discoloration out from the thinner (magsafe) cable end. Great idea and worked for half of it but the other half..... not sure maybe I would have to do something similar to people using bleach and UV light who restore old yellow game consoles. If you have any ideas it would be much appreciated! Thanks for the video!

Hmmmm - hard to say! Rubber impairs over time so it may be damaged. You could try a little peroxide on the cable and see if that works? I’d love to know if it does (or doesn’t!).

Hi Blue Tech, in order to limit the amount of e-waste because of cosmetic reasons, I can give you following tip: I had multiple chargers with cables turning yellow. I accidentally left one lying outside in the sun for 3 hours and to my surprise, the side lying upwards turned white again! I do not know how long this patch works, but worth the shot.

Is that sponge a Mr. Clean 'magic eraser"? I would think that would work great but not sure what it's made of (chemicals) so just wondering. I also see yours is pretty damaged at the end that connects to the MacBook and has exposed wires... How did you deal with/clean that part? I have the newest Macbook Pro, 16-inch, and the new charger comes with the cord no longer being plastic, but covered in a soft rope-like material like some of the off-brand phone charges are now. It's way much more flexible (and seems more durable) but stains if you accidentally mark it with a pen or spill something and it happens to touch it. I wonder how to correctly clean this new kind of charger cord?

is that the reason it turned yellow? I see a lot of people saying that they can still use the cables/adapters after they turn yellow - so how big of a damage is it, if you can still continue using it? Is it unsafe to keep on using them?
@cgi2173
@cgi2173 Жыл бұрын
@@ayuumi6262 Of course you can use them when they turn yellow. Also they can be used if there is breakage in the sheath. If you don't want to buy new, then cover the damage with some electrical tape. Then save up for a new charger. 😁
