I should have tried that first... instead, I poured most of a 5L bottle of white vinegar (€20 in my local ripoff hardware shop!!!) into an empty toilet bowl that probably only held half of that. The rest just ran into the drainpipe, thankfully without triggering the siphon effect. The limescale extends an inch or two above the waterline. I ended up lining the edges with kitchen roll which hopefully has wicked enough vinegar to soften the high limescale. Guess it's been ten minutes now so I'll check...
@CleaningHowTo4 ай бұрын
@batlin it’ll need a few hours!
@batlin4 ай бұрын
@@CleaningHowTo left it till morning and some of it came off, but it was *really* bad so it seems a few attempts will be needed. Luckily I found a cheaper place to get white vinegar since the local hardware shop is an absolute rip. The downside of vinegar is that it just runs off the sides, so above the waterline that trick with paper towels (or folded up jacks roll) is needed. There's probably some clever mixture you can make that turns it into a more viscous foam, but maybe also blows up the house.

Keep in mind that vinegar _does_ damage rubber gaskets and seals. Storing this in the tank for a long period of time runs the risk of damaging the rubber in the fill valve and the tank bolts (if you have a two-piece toilet)

The Clorox brand bowl solids with bleach will kill the seal in the water supply tower, but that is because there’s bleach in the water 24/7. Vinegar in the water tank for a few hours, 4 times a year, I think is better than all the mineral and gunk that are in the tank if left uncleaned.

OMG. I listened to so many videos touting this idea so, I tried a bit of vinegar in both the toilet tank and in the basin pipe. Doing this caused much leaking rusty water. I managed to tighten the tank screw so, that-without vinegar-it eventually stopped leaking. And, the pipe under the basin?? It now leaks rusty water in at least two places on the pipe and wouldn’t stop. The basin itself? It has a stopper that stopped stopping water. In other words, no mo’ use of the basin. So sorry I ever did this. Good luck to everyone.

Actually, you can make a one-time effort and clean unlimited toilets effortlessly and without damaging rubber seals, etc. Get a submersible solar-fountain pump and place it at the bottom of the bowl, and a long-enough hose to feed the overflow tube. Then fill with bleach to get rid of accumulated mold, vinegar for hard-water stains, etc. Let it run for as long as it takes to do the job. Be prepared to watch disgusting things to come out the under-the-rim holes when using bleach. Oh, wrap the pump loosely with cheesecloth to keep said disgusting things from clogging up the pump's intake.
