I'm cleaning my first ever skull today; a little magpie who I've known for 5 years, and sadly passed away. And I just want to say thank you to you, Ryan, because I've learnt so much from you and your videos! All is going good so far, and I can't wait to add her to my collection. And of course, awesome video as always! what a badass lookin' critter.

Love watching your videos they inspired me to do my own skulls, I’ve done a buck and hog skull no problem but I’ve had problems with a young hog and javelina. For some reason I couldn’t get the tusk to fit properly with out haven to sand them down from the base. Does it have to do with them being younger? Or maybe I boiled them to long? Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I haven't got an actually skull of a oryx but I just recently got a horn :DD It's amazing and I have no idea how the people that gave it to me got it, since I live in friggin Finland?? But anyway, I also got a full pigs skull (minus teeth), a half deer skull, two cow horns, elk teeth, half a deer jaw and about 1/3 of a deer spine (All are pretty much all bone, found somewhere) And your videos seem very helpful in the whole skull cleaning stuff, great work :D👍

So I was recently given a set of Oryx horns with horn core still inside. No skull just the horns. Anyway I through them in a tub of water with a couple whitetail and one hog head for about a day until I could get to cleaning them. When I pulled them out the horns seemed to have become very spongy and flaking apart. I did not put any chemicals in the water. Any idea what causes that? I’m going to hang them up to dry to see if it helps.

Just for curiosity, why do you have to cut the horn core? Besides their size at the moment to wash.
@TreF684 жыл бұрын
curious, when you do an elk, do you leave the ivorys, or remove them? I might try this myself if I get a deer next year (no luck this year), looks like a satisfying process.

@JustNatax34 жыл бұрын
Skimitar oryx were indeed hunted to extinction in the wild, but the numbers of them in captivity for zoos, meat and free range are astronomical, least concern. Since they got extinct by hunting, people tried to repopulate their former african habitats. They used to populate the whole barren middle sahara, from egypt to tchad, basically all over africa. They are slowly growing in numbers again now, and they will probably be okay in the future.

Did you have to label the horns left and right or is it obvious where each one goes. BTW I cleaned my first skull this year using your vids for guidance and it turned out great. An alternative to acetone if you’ve any concerns with that is a degreasing with a dawn dish soap and water mix! Doesn’t have to be dawn exactly, any degreasing soap will do but I’ve heard dawn works best! I’ve been degreasing my skulls with no more than a few days in the mix, giving them a little scrub and then repeat until they stop being sticky lmao. I more so take care of skulls found in the woods so they’re usually dirty and grimey and already mostly pre-fleshed so I can assure you the method works swell! Just wanted to suggest an alternative if acetone gave you some hassles like it did for me!! : )

Hello there Thankx for sharing this post, glad I found your channel, I love your posts Mr. Olsen I do have a question if you please and I know you have the answer to it the question is about the horn of this scimitar oryx horn core are they hollow or they are like the horns of a mountain sheep solid core horns ----- I would really love it if you in one of your posts dedicate a few minutes to your audiences pointing at the animal display table that you have to tell us about each and every animal This has a solid core and this has a hollow core why?? the reason is these horns are the prime material for primitive bow making the famous horn bow that is Who is the best person to ask?? the answer is Mr. Ryan Olsen the one who busts them open
