I clean my Gitzo Systematic 4 series at least once a year and always after being at the coast. I bought several years ago half a kg of lithium grease which is enough for a lifte time. I clean the legs inside with a plastic rod with a cloth towel on it and push it several times true the whole tube. I put a little bit of graphite powder on the plastic shims because grease will “bond” sand particles potentially resulting in clumps of sand which is very abrasive. Cleaning is also an inspection, once I had a broken plastic liner or tightner in the leg lock without making problems but I replaced it just in case.

A good tripod which I only have good words for in terms of coast photography is the Leofoto Poseidón. Not cheap, perfectly distinguishable by its blue colour but a real treat when you find yourself taking photos at seasides or seashores.

Thank you. I have done minor cleaning but have been thinking about a deep clean of my tripod.

Thanks for the step-by-step process for dismantling and reassembling a tripod. (BTW - trivia note: WD of WD-40, stands for water displacement) A word of advice however - direct skin contact and or inhalation with lithium grease can bring problematic health concerns for some. Alternative product also manufactured by WD-40 is silicon spray. Each have their pros and cons, simply a word of caution in choosing lubricants.

Excellent video - I have the same tripod so this will be incredibly useful for when I clean it. Many thanks

Good video Todd👍🏾 everyone should learn how to take their triood apart and put it back together so they don't freak out when it happens by accident! B&H Gitzo reviews are peppered with negative beginnerscomments about tripods coming apart because they haven't got to know their tripod well enough. A few small comments - that yellow sponge had a scourer pad - that's a no-no if you're a newbie. Gitzo do sell a grease. It isn't cheap but good for occasional use. Seems to clean off easily though, that grease remover you use shouldn't be left to soak on - too powerful. Park Tool do a bike chain degreaser which is worth checking out. GT85 spray is really good for gentle lubrication on legs. Also really good on zips. Not oily and smells better than WD40 - good to keep on the shelf. Love your channel. 👍🏾👍🏾

I just got back from the Oregon coast as well and was wondering how easy it was to clean everything up. This video was perfectly timed for me!

I was cleaning my tripods since I purchased more a less serious Manfrotto. It has quick-locks and it’s a bit difficult to clean them so it became a “studio” tripod. For travelling I have two Gitzo tripods and it’s pretty easy to disassemble and clean them just as on the video. With the regular maintenance they will probably outlast me.

Dawn is the best / safest degreaser. IMHO (Dawn Power Wash comes in a convenient sprayer) WD40 is not a lubricant it is a water repellent.

I wonder if the small parts could be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.
