“Why were the insoles not replaced?”. We’ve received this question quite a number of times below, so I’ll save you the time and answer it. For one, this video is titled “...Resole”...meaning it’s exactly that. A resole. Also, these are $200 boots brand new. We’ve put out other videos showing us replacing insoles, and it’s a tedious and expensive job. The crack in the insole will not make a difference in the way this boot feels or functions. We replaced the liners, which we did not show, so the owner won’t feel anything going forward. Again, we do what the customers pay for. Sometimes we add a bit to shoes/boots in our videos for entertainment and to be generous. Replacing the insoles on this pair would not have been worth it financially. 👍

Love how you guys are straight forward and care about how to take care of the customer. Not trying to nickel and dime them. Just making sure what they need and what fits them for their shoes/boots. Keep the videos coming. Learning a lot from you guys!!

What? No $500 repair of a $200 boot? My pair were seconds so they were less than $150 (bad speed hook, replaced with grommets)
@kirikennedy97963 жыл бұрын
When this type of thing is found, do you contact the customer to let them know and see if they want to replace the insole, or do you not worry about it since it's not worth it financially and it doesn't affect the function/feel of the boot?

As a child in a one parent family I grew up in an apartment above a cobblers in the late 70's and early 80's, in England. The chap Tom Sparks, now passed on sadly, he used to let me pester him, on the school breaks and I asked him what's this and what's that, he always took the time to explain, it gave me a great appreciation for the trade and skill, and a great appreciation for quality footwear. I am a great lover of leather boots that are made properly, so a stitched sole is a must for me. I am most partial to military footwear, but now they are all the moulded glued soul, in my opinion a disposable boot, I waste of good upper leather. So in my search for replacement boots, I find myself buying Austrian military boots. They are a fabulous boot in my opinion, very comfortable, strong, durable and the best thing, they can be re soled. So they have the potential of lasting decades, I treat them well and look after the leather. Keep any crinkles from drying out with regular care. I have noticed that both English, US and many other countries military boots have the moulded sole with plastic stitch effect. This I find quite sad. I took a pair of my old work wear boots to a cobbler's (which is a dying trade in England it seems, mostly a side line to a key cutting shop), I asked if a welt could be added so a stitched sole could be added to make the boot last. He said impossible. I was gutted, the leather uppers were in excellent condition. The sadly ended up in the waste as the moulded sole had split and was coming away by the glue at the sides. You from the two videos I have watched having only discovered you today seem to be quite the expert at this trade, and it takes me back to watching Tom as a kid. I was fascinated, seeing all the equipment and remember many of the machines of the trade, the smell of the glue, the sewing machine for stitching leather, nostalgia trip. Makes me wish I had gone into the trade, but I doubt I'd find much work over here now. Anyway in your opinion could these moulded soles be replaced with a stitched sole or would there not be enough material to work with, would they be compromised? Why have they done this? My guess is for quickness and saving money in production. Love the channel by the way, and I will be watching with great interest. I would love to hear your opinion on this matter. I appreciate your busy though. Happy cobbling.

Missed seeing videos from you, great video for a cloudy day in Chicago. Thank you! I just had a conversation with my local cobbler - took your advice and got Vibram sole savers for my shoes - he said that when he started in our area 20+ years ago there were 6 cobblers, now...he is the only man standing! I asked if he was going to get an apprentice. I sure hope he does. Your channel has made me come to appreciate the craftsmanship that goes behind repairing a shoe, and I thank you and your brother, for the life lesson. Blessings, to you both, and I do hope to see another video soon. Be safe, stay healthy.

Nice work good craftsmanship. One thing I dont see by any of the KZbin cobblers that the old times did was they truely renewed my shoes. All the stuff inside the shoe was replaced along with the sole and then they dyed the shoes or boots again and polished them to a shine that was as good as when new. Especially my original shoe man. Old Mario looked about as black as a coal miner from all the shoes he redid on those big buffing wheels. But man were those shoes not only comfortable again but beautiful.
