Got to be honest, huge respect for the fact that he insists on using his own tools instead of risking yours! Been battling with the EGR in my Golf 6 for a while now, wish they hadn't stuck the bugger between the block and the DPF, under the turbo/exhaust manifold...

on these , you also need to remove the metal pipe that joins onto the back of the egr valve , at the engine side of it , that blocks with shit , and cokes the engines air out take and you will lose power , i did mine yest , the egr valve wasnt to bad , it was the engine join that was causing the issues , be warned , scraping the carbon from the top of the air outtake could end up blocking the the veins that come from the valves and you might have trouble starting it again after , i used a hoover and a long screw driver to get mine off , i ended up with the car not starting and sounding like it had no compression for about 3 hours of turning it over , " i had blocked an outtake" but she did in the end fire , a puff of smoke and now drives like a rocket , remove the battary , its much easyer to get to the bottom two bolts , also remove the rad pipe directly under one of the bolts , you will never get that bolt out let alone back in again

Nice vid thanks. I've a problem on my Astra H 1.7CDTi where it always starts first time but always dies after five or six seconds of running, when cold. Then it takes ages of cranking but does start - until a few days ago when it just will not start at all. I have replaced the cam sensor and no difference, so I have to suspect the EGR valve (?). When it's warm it normally starts no problem. It does smoke a lot and it does splatter oil out of the exhaust especially when I pull a trailer. The turbo went a while ago anyway which doesn't help. Any clues? Also I would assume the intake manifold will be clogged as you pointed out - but how to clean it without removing it? The car's not worth fixing up too much, I just want to keep it running another few weeks till I can get back to the UK... cheers!

One point of mention is about the vlave being closed and if it is not in the closed position then it will not start . If it is not in the closed position then how do you make sure it is closed ?

Not sure if you will reply.. I have a problem with my astra h 1.7 cdti It was low on power i used egr valve cleaner but didnt make no difference.. I removed egr and pipe cleaned both out noticed the inlet manifold was also very blocked so screw driver and vacuum came out. Cleaned it the best i could put it all bk together but no start 😔 Was expecting some loose carbon to be in the inlet port/valves. After hours of pissing about trying to remove the manifold i got it off cleaned it like new also hover and driver in the pure carbon inlet ports. Bk together still no start 😣😣😣😣😣😠 Please help im a 🤡

I believe your problem to be with the position of the egr valve. Its probably stuck and needs freeing up.

I watched the video for the 1.9cdti and it was so much easier to get that one off compared to this. No where near as much fiddly bolts etc. Although the bolts did shear of in the manifold on my one... love the videos guys keep up the good work. PS: the supra looms class!

Another tip I've heard about cleaning the actual pipe rather than the valve is setting fire to the inside of the pipe and letting it burn off all the oil and it makes the soot and shit in there crusty so it can just be tapped out

It can be, Just make sure theres no naked flames for obvious reasons.

Regretfully I still get the MIL light on when going up an incline.I suspect the next operation would be to remove the Intake manifold. do you have any videos on this operation.?Regards, tom.

it would, but it will throw a EML light on the dashboard. To counteract this you will need to have it remapped and have the EGR system deleted from the ECU

Yea thats one problem, another way to fix it is before you put the blanking plate in, drill a 9/10 mm hole to allow air to pass through and then this way it does not throw any codes

A 9mm is fine on most. But you still letting the sotted air through, just less. hmm

My Astra J 1.7 CDTI has 114k km I bought it used and it probably also never had the EGR cleaned. did you experience noticeable engine performance improvement after cleaning? Gain in power and smaller fuel consumption?

dudekidPL you wouldn't gain in power above standard. You would get back power lost. If that makes sense.

Right now its getting about 7.2L/100km which I thought its quite high, people online also say it should be around 6L and a bit. I will definitely clean the EGR in hopes of getting the standard fuel consumption which seems to be lower than I currently get. Thanks again for your replies

Anybody had any trouble with an Astra G 1.7 cdti that throws loads of black smoke when you put the foot down in 2nd or 3rd gear? I’ve done the injector leak test and a small amount of diesel in all four bottles after five minutes of running. Could the egr make it do that on these cars? 161k on the engine and driving ok just black smoke and a bit of a diesel knock sound sometimes on a steep hill.

The valve is still open. You need to make sure it's clean and closed before refitting.

Fault code P0234 - Opel says that is software update time. If not - vacuum leak - if not that - turbo...... Check for Freeze frame info - if the boost pressure sensor shows below 95 - UPDATE!
