I'm surprised you did not mention ghost lights. My first glasses did not have an AR coating, and at night, bright lights would be reflected back into my eyes from various angles so that I would see many more lights than there actually were. This made night driving very difficult and confusing-especially in unfamiliar areas. AR coated glasses eliminated this completely. For me, this was a safety issue. Cheers, Russ

Man they hit me with over 300.00 purely for lens “options” and I’m really relying on your videos to get to the bottom of this….my prescription is very slight and it’s time we educate ourselves on eye lens function,features, prices, and brands also the difference between necessity and pushy sales tactics..we need to know especially because your vision is not only the most important of your 5 senses but the windows to the soul.

@DoctorEyeHealth4 жыл бұрын
Most sunglasses do not have anti reflective on the front or back surfaces of the lenses, but higher quality sunlenses have the coating on the back side. Most coatings do not have a specific color for you to choose from, it depends on the company/product you are purchasing as different companies may have their own formula. My favorite right now is the Crizal Saphire 360, which has very little reflection at all. but seems like a faint light blue.

But I'm wondering if there's really a significant difference between the levels and if it's worth it to pay extra for a higher level.
@DoctorEyeHealth5 жыл бұрын
Really good question and I'm preparing a video to review just that! But there is a difference between the standard and higher quality ones. The higher the quality the less color reflections and the more light passes through at different angles. They also add on anti scratch and anti dust technology

I've been wearing coated lenses for over thirty years. Not all coatings are created equal. The same applies to AR coatings. Like tyres (tires for USA), you generally get what you pay for. I've worn many brands; - eg. Hoya, Kodak, Rodenstock, Carl Zeiss. In general higher market lenses are coated at the factory. This gives a more consistent and usually much more durable finished result compared with those lenses coated at the lab where they're fitted into the frames. I'm currently wearing Carl Zeiss Progressive Precison Superb, 1.67 index and Zeiss' Lotutec coatings. My wife has same lenses but the Zeiss Duravision Platinum coating. This is more expensive product than Lotutec but it's a b*****d to keep clean. Lotutec, meanwhile, is extremely hyrophobic and oleophobic. Dirt almost falls of 'em. In short, I wholly recommend AR coatings to anyone. Buy a couple of large microfiber lens towels, keep the towels clean, don't scrub at the lenses and you'll experience no problems. If they're filthy then dilute dish washing soap and a rinse under the tap before cleaning will prevent damage to the coatings.
@JennySimon20611 ай бұрын
How long have they lasted? That is the magic question. We have no doubt they will be awesome at first dude.
@alannorr4 жыл бұрын
For many years my optometrist has been telling me that the new A R coatings are better than the old ones, and sucked me in to trying them again. They are no better. Granted, they are clearer when they are clean, but are impossible to clean. Doesn't matter how you try to clean them, they always look like the dog licked them. Dish soap is the best, but they are never clean. Always streaked. If they ever need cleaning and you are not near any dish soap, you have the terrible experience of spending the day looking through streaked glasses. I don't need that kind of grief, so I now have the regular lenses. Every day I am glad I didn't listen to somebody who makes extra cash selling A R coated glasses.

Great video. I just got AR glasses and since I sit at a computer most of the day, they suggested a "Duravision Blue Protect" lens to block out Blue Light. I am noticing a bit of a yellow hue, especially when outside. Sometimes to the point where I'm lifting my glasses to know the difference in color. In your opinion, do the pro's of Blue protect outweigh the yellowish hue to the lens?
@DoctorEyeHealth5 жыл бұрын
Hey Kyle! I personally like the blue protect. There are different brands and lenses that have different levels of blue protection, but in general the more blue protection the yellower the lens. If you are not a big fan of the yellow, consider talking to the optical about having them switched out. Transitions lenses with the Preventia coating will give you 30% blue light protection without having the yellow hue I personally have a pair of Kodac total blue lenses that block 80% but have just a slight blue color that I dont find bothersome unless I am painting or doing something that requires correct color perception. Otherwise I find them rather calming.

I work in the produce section of a major grocery store chain and constantly going from salesfloor into 2 cold stockrooms. When coming back onto the salesfloor from the stockroom my glasses fog up. The fog has wedged itself in between the lens and the AR coating and isn't able to be cleaned according to the eyglasses store I purchased them from. I believe AR coating is NOT worth it. Great information! I'm a professional driver and can't see at night...I thought it was my eyes, now I think it's my glasses! Unfortunately my insurance only covers the absolute very bare minimum. I think this is causing my eyesight to be worse! I have to tilt my head up to see while driving at night and everything is still super blurry, etc. Can't read signs, can't read addresses... but fine during the day. Also I'm constantly taking my glasses off to read anything or look at things close up, or else it's super blurry. I can't see anything at all driving without them though, so it's required. Also I clean them, blink, and they're all smudged again.
@BennyKleykens2 жыл бұрын
What's often omitted are the disadvantages. An AR coat wears fast, after 2 years the 'craze' is so bad you'll want new glasses. In the vid it's claimed that the newer types don't do this but it is then very important to get that type of AR coating! Otherwise, stay away from AR if you have the choice (higher index glasses come with AR whether you like it or not). Under +/-3 you don't need high index (=thinner) glasses. Be aware. Index 1.74 is really only necessarry from +/- 10. Opticiens tend to oversell : 1.74 or 1.67 is far more expensive, and not necessary for most people.
@catbirdler2 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily true. My prescription is -6.75 and I've always used high index lenses. It gives you much more flexibility in choice of frames, for example, being able to use a thin metal frame (rather than thicker plastic) which wouldn't work well with a regular lens. Especially for nearsightedness, it means less lens sticking out of the frame at the sides and less bulk overall.

I hate anti-reflective coatings. Sure, they reduce glare, but they not only smudge super easily, but they attract dust and lint, and above all, scratch at the slightest touch. Seriously, I can use a microfiber cloth after wetting the lens with the eyeglass cleaning fluid given to me by the same store I got my glasses, and I will ALWAYS have at LEAST one new scratch by the time I'm done. Normally I get about 2 to 5 scratches each time. Add in the tiny spot-like pock marks that seem to appear, and anti-reflective coating isn't worth all the hassle. I'd rather deal with some glare than have to replace my glasses in six months because they're scratched up so badly I can't even use them.

If long-distance glasses (intended for driving) with anti-glare protection do not visibly reduce any glare, does it help to have the lenses additionally tinted (50%) or what is the best solution? I went to the eye dr and they talked me into upgrading to premium anti glare coating for an extra $80. I was reluctant because my insurance covered a basic antiglare at 100%. Anyways I just so happened to call my insurance and the office billed me for basic and took my money for the upgrade. I ended up getting my money back and left the glasses there and got my benefits reinstated because I couldn't tell if I had gotten what I paid for. Is there a way to tell basic anti glare coating vs premium anti glare? If so whats the difference?

WOw. Thats a crazy story. Really sorry to hear you had that experience. It makes me angry that a place would try and pull that. Happy you got the money back and the benefits reinstated. It can be pretty difficult to compare sometimes, depending on the brands. BUT I will see if I can make a follow up video on it so I can SHOW you what it looks like. Cheers

In my opinion, no. You can however, sometimes tell by the color whether or not it is a blue light blocking AR. Usually much more Blue/Purple in color. I personally have not worked with everyone brand on the market but between the ones I do, there is no way to tell what level and AR is by looking at it. Of course if its crazing or coming off, its probably a low level, standard coating. (Optician)

I only order AR coated lenses - especially for me as a video producer it is important and overall happier with the way they look. Worth the extra cost.

hi! i love your videos... Very informative... i have a question, can a blue lense / blue blocking lense be an anti glare?
@DoctorEyeHealth6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ivy! Glad your enjoying the videos. It really does mean a lot to hear that. I am actually going to release a few videos on blue light protection here in the next few weeks. But in short, to answer your question, Yes blue blocking can also be an anti-glare. However, the anti-reflective coatings on the market with the blue blocking technology that I am aware of...only block roughly 20% of blue light. Happy thanksgiving!

The only problem with the Anti-Reflective layer is that is comes off easier than you would think! The ppl who made it, didn't factor in weather change and elements in the air, bcuz lemme tell you, my Raybans look terrible with all this pealing effect. I'd rather deal with the reflection!

Over time some coating do come off, especially older coating technology. Heat often causes more problems.

This happend to me too. I posted above. After 1 year you are ending up with a dirty like lens aspect more dangerous for the eyes. I cannot spent money for expensive glasses at 6 months time. Unfortunatelly those are things that sellers do not tell.

@@Catalin40Ro There are online optical stores like eyebuydirect and Zenni. Their prices are very reasonable and glasses are high quality

Can you help a person go from 20/50, to 20/25, in 6 months. Or is that impossible.
@DoctorEyeHealth4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what the visual problem is. Such as a retinal disease that needs treatment or maybe amblyopia? Otherwise optical correction is often the easiest answer for improving vision.

What is the average cost of this coating? And Is dish soap really the best method for cleaning eyeglasses?
