⁠@@Artoconnell each unit is different, not all are equal under your rule. Hopefully, anyone that’s attempting to find easier access to the evap coils will look up their unit to be sure. A/C techs do not want you ( customers) to look it up for themselves. If they did that, then the techs wouldn’t be able to charge for a huge service fee, imagery parts, labor, and whatever else they could to make sure you pay 500 bucks to do a job that actually is easier than cleaning your oven, with less cost in supplies. This is the biggest money maker ever!!

Thank you so much for your video, all the technicians said I needed a new unit from $2500 - $6500. None of them wanted to clean my unit just sell me one!! I followed your instructions (even wrote them down step by step) and brushed very carefully with a wire dog brush that I attached to a 1/2" PVC pipe 12" long and taped it on, worked great. The unit is from 1996 LOL to the AC Guys who want to be lazy and make you buy a new unit!!!!!

I just found this video while trying to figure out what is wrong with our ac. We even used the same product except we used the foaming one. It worked perfect. The ac is back to working again and it cost us $7 for the product. We are a struggling non-profit and this saved us so much money. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! my 24 year old system had no easy access because they just fabbed sheet metal around the coil. Alas, it leaked and i replaced the system. Brand new systems now have access panels.... but alas, the contractor company I paid to do whole-house duct cleaning decided to install the new system first, THEN blow compressed air through the ductwork. Incredibly smart. Brand new system, contaminated. My 24 year old system surprisingly looked cleaner than my new system.

Be careful to go straight with the air other wise you will bend the coils. If by chance you do You'll need to very carefully straighten them back out.

As a worker in the field I don't use air to blow dirt into the duct work. If it is full of hair, or caked over I use a metal brush. If you replace a your air filter in a schedule, your coils stay clean.

I went 20 years before cleaning my evaporator coils because I didn't know any better. The dirt buildup was extreme. I think my cold air flow increased by a factor of 3 maybe after cleaning. I'll bet my electric bill will see a large drop too

I have had two ECMs die in 2 years due to high static pressure. My system runs at 0.78 when it should be 0.5 or below. When removing the coil access panel it drops to 0.45, so something is either wrong in the ducting or the coil is filthy. The system is 15 years old and its never been cleaned, however our system has the normal filters as well as an air purifier before the blower and coils, so I find it hard to believe anything got through. I will have to check though, as this system is really not running well right now.

You should have sprayed the water from the other side of the coil to flush out the gunk. When you are blowing it with your compressed air you ate pushing the gunk further in. Spray your cleaner and rinse from the top side so you push it out.

Thank you for your comments. I tried spaying it out from the other side but gunk was still there. I was blowing air at the angle and got most of it out. This worked for my particular situation. Yours may be different. I only showed what worked for me.

Same AC as mine. Mine is way dirtier than that! My drain was clogged up and water was overflowing the pan and leaking all over the house. It took me a while to figure out what was leaking. Once I shop vac'd out the drain It quit leaking. I did have to clean the coils again tho. Good info. I wanted to clean the evap but didnt want to use something corrosive so your recommendation helps! Thank You! I also sealed everything below the unit so water wouldnt drain all underneath the floor tiles in the house again. That was a mess. They put an elbow joint right at the drain so its almost impossible to ram something down there to remove the clog. I drilled a hole in the pipe so I could clean it out then use hot glue to seal it up again. I also put the shop vac on the open part of the drain where your pouring the water in and suck it out. Works great.

Next time that drain pipe clogs, used compreased air to blow it out. You can use your free hand around the nozzle and pipe to seal it. You can use a air compressor or even canned air if necessary. Spiders may clog the pipe toward the outside in the cool season.

I would not glue the joints in the PVC drain pipe, it makes it much easier to keep clean. That water is not under any pressure, just gravity. If snugged properly, there should be no leaks.

@@michaelwright1602 everything is already glued together. I'd have to replace most of the drain pipe to clean it and thats why I drilled a straight path through the elbow and stuck a wine cork in so when it clogs I can pull the plug and shop vac it out. I also sealed the floor around under the unit so it will fill up like a bath tub before it leaks under the floor again. I just wait for my wife to complain about the dripping noise then I go clean it out. worked all last summer and this summer I had to clean it out once so far. it drains into the kitchen drain. I wish it drained outside onbdedicated piping but I ain't replumbing that! so far its working so I ain't messing with it.

2 things here: Unless your coils have a heavy mineral deposit layer it is best to use a highly diluted soapy water (just simple dish soap) let it sit for at least 15 minutes. If you do use air pressure to blow out the coils do it in the opposite direction shown in this video. You want to blow the "gunk" out in the opposite direction of the units airflow.

For very dirty coil use this technique with the copressor. for medium or average dirty one you can use viper cleaner like I showed in my other AC playlist videos.

I did not remove my blower. Dirt is collected on the bottom of the coil. Removing blower allows you only to have better access from the top.

First I sprayed with cleaner, then you need to spray with clean water to remove debris and chemicals from cleaning process. Than you let it dry for awhile and turn AC on again.

Yes. You need to rinse the coils from cleaner thoroughly. There should be no more foam in the drip pan. After that let your coil dry then turn AC on again. If your coil is too dirty and the soap and water does not help you may have to use some kind of coil cleaner.

Spray with foam in cane from Home Depot ( no rinse ) , use soft brush. And by the will of god don’t use compressor. Just after brushing shop vacuum. It will pull all loose dirt and foam , no mess.🤷🏼‍♂️👍

Thanks for sharing. As you could see use of compressed air did help me to get rid of gunk in between coil blades that was just stuck there. I have used foam spray before and Home Depot one is slightly acidic. I did not want to use that in that situation.

My air handler is 10 years old. Last year my pvc condensate drain pipe got clogged, so the water did not drain outside but overflowed in drain pan, then onto floors. Big mess, but my shut off valve did not work, so I did not know it was overflowing. The plywood platform, along with the 2 x 4 beams that my air handler sits got soaked and is now sagging in the rear of the unit. It started leaking again and I vacumned the pvc drain outside to remove clog. EXCEPT the condensate leak was not due to drain clog (water isn't even flowing towards the drain). Since my unit is longer level and tilts back, the condensate water is flowing towards back (opposite side) of unit and overflowing the drain pan on the opposite side of where the PVC drain pipe. Air conditioning unit works and cools great BUT, I have been paying a home warranty company monthly for 4 years and this is 1st time I used them. The tech was out for 5 minutes, never opened the closet door to look at the air handler to see that the unit was tilted causing the leak. Instead he peeked under the unit (where you just cleaned) and said my coil was leaking water because it was dirty and full of holes and that the warranty company will not pay to repair it due to coil being dirty. After I told him that my contract covers dirty coils and/or lack of maintenance, then his 3 minute diagnosis changed to the coil having mold and lots of holes in the coil causing the condensate leak. My warranty company will not cover if mold. Within 10 minutes, I had a repair quote for $6,250 to replace a 2.5 ton system (air handler and condensing unit)! My air conditioning system that cools my house beautifully! I asked for a 2nd opinion from warranty company, but before he comes out I wanted to make sure the coils are clean so they can't blame a condensate drain flow issue on a moldy coil. I saw you cleaned the underneath coils but I wanted to make sure the other side of the coils are clean, too. After removing the air handler cover, can I spray the solution onto the exterior of the coils (the opposite side that you sprayed, too? Any help would be so appreciated.

Remember that Ac warranty company will always try to find a way not to give you warranty. They are only good to take your money, just like any other insurance company. I am not AC professional so don't quote what I say. I just service and clean my AC the way I see make sense. You can use coil cleaner to clean coils but if its going to work or not I can not guarantee that. My mom ac had some mold. I sprayed it with coil cleaner and id did not help much. It's the place were the is moisture 24/7. There is a good company Viper Coil cleaner that I will buy soon and I have seen this at lease on video to do the best job cleaning coils. Try a fine dog hair brush with metal bristles. Attach to a half inch piece of pvc with tape as a make shift long handle. Will remove all gunk. Just be gentle and don't bend the coils.

Idk how much you know about this but you obviously know alot more than me. I can see quite a bit of dust between the coils and my question is this. Could this be the reason my unit is freezing up? It is mostly dirty on the top side. After watching this video I got under mine and the under is, for the most part, pretty clean.

I don't think this is a reason for freezing, although if there is not enough space in between coils then it will freeze. Most of the time coil will freeze if your air filter is dirty. I cleaned my coils after my home renovation which created bunch of dust in the air. This dust was sucked into the coils. I cleaned coils to make them more efficient. You coils can also freeze if your drain line is clogged so clean it at least once a year. I flush mine 3 times a year. Watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKu0fmSph9x_mK8 I hope this helps.

@@sin-ro4lr To be honest, the reason my ac kept freezing was due to it being low on freon. I cleaned it good and cleared the pipe but it kept freezing because the freon was low. I got someone to come re charge it and it cost me about $150. It hasn't froze since.

I have been having trouble with my A/C, the AC company came out and sprayed and the air starting working and now my unit is warming up again. They said if this happens again that they have to remove the ceiling to access the unit to clean the evaporator but for some reason the owner is avoiding this process. I am so frustrated

Sure, to take it out you need to remove freon, cut the lines, clean it outside then pay $400 or more for the AC service.

I did not feel any noticeable change. I just know that the is a better flow in between Coil blades because I remove all that gunk. You can use any brush, just be careful not to bend the coils.

So 2 years ago that coil was clean? only took 2 years to get that dirty/nasty? thanks... can you tell me if your electric bill was better after this cleaning? did your AC run less time to keep house cool than before you cleaned.?.. i ask because its been 6 years since my coil has been cleaned and it seems when its very hot outside my AC can never catch up and runs constantly....I think i need to do this asap.. What I meant was, 2 year prior I cleaned the coil but from the top. It never occurred to me to clean it from the bottom. My electric bill has not changed because coil was just dirty. It was not clogged to the point that it would affect air flow. I live in FL so when it's very hot my AC runs more often then normal. Also, it depends on how you attic is insulated. My mom's AC was running constantly. It was not AC problem. Attic did not have enough insulation so I rented a machine from Home Depot and sprayed extra insulation one year. It did help a lot doing this with lowering my mom's electric bill and keeps the house cooler.

I've tried but it didn't work. I had too much gunk from my construction work in the coils. It was dust from removing popcorn ceilings. They only way to get it out was compressed air.

You need a foaming cleaner for it to work. The foam will push the dirt out of the fins.

My A-coil is on top of my heating elements so can not access under the A-coil.

Use distilled water if you are mixing any cleaning solution. Generally tap water has excess minerals and bottled water is worse in most cases. I learned this the hard way using poland spring bottled water (5gal) jugs when i first had a saltwater tank. Instant aglae bloom from the phosphate in the socalled "filtered" water.

You should not use compressed air that will bend the fins and actually cause the unit to work harder to cool. Not a good idea or technique.
