Nice, job. I have cast iron that was my Grandma's, Here's what she did. Never use soap, it removes the protective coating. Use hot water to clean and if you get rust, use rock salt or coarse ground salt, scrub until rust is gone.. Then dry and use uncured bacon grease, to cover the pan. 400 preset oven, put pan in for 2 hours. Let pan cool. Take pan out. Slice one large onion, and bacon grease, then cook onions until they are almost black. Clean pan with hot water only. Then oven treat again. The onion removes any bad flavors and helps to clean deep into the cast.. My cast is over a 100 years old. Still works great. Look for, Grizwald or Wagner. They are the best cast you can find.

I recently got my mil old cast irons when she passed. They are smooth bottom like smithey but they are older and I didn’t have to pay 180.00 for them . Got 3 diff size . I also found one my grand mother had given me years ago. Also smooth bottom

@OutdoorsAllie To tell you the truth I really don't know I used to bring it when I was camping exclusively but I changed to a wok & a pot. I like cooking so all of my pans in my kitchen are non-stick.

I have a lot of vintage cast iron. I like to season with coconut oil but if you fix bacon regularly (why wouldn’t you?) you’ll never need to worry about it.

Pro tip, hunt down antique cast iron stuff and stay away from new, even Lodge brand. The old ones are smooth as glass inside. A good #10 and a #8 fry pan is a good start. I have some odd ones like a chicken pan but I am kind of a freak. Oh, BTW you can get covers for these fry pans if you want, hard to find them sometimes.

All these people commenting about not using soap must be using soap that’s older than their grandmas 😂 Old school soap had lye in it which was terrible for the pans. Modern dish detergent is mild and perfectly fine to use on cast iron. Soaking the pan in vinegar like one comment said is way more aggressive than just using a little bit of Dawn

Great grandma's solution. Heat with little water then light scrub off hangers with brillo pad. Rinse n cook bacon. Eat Bacon n wipe clean. May need more bacon till full.

Coconut oil and cooking with a lot of fat. You don't have to scrub it after cooking all the time, just hot water and a scrub with a wooden spoon while the water boils. No "Food Safe" man made oils in cooking utensils. Only natural oils and fats. My father has a cast iron skillet going on 3 generations now, about 170 years old, coated with seasoning fats. Still the best non-stick pan he has, can't be beat.

I don't even do half that and I can fry an egg over easy with all my cast iron pans. Mild detergent is ok. I never use it. I clean it with kosher salt and, dry it off with a towel. Then put it on the burner so any excess water is evaporated. If it needs oil I will oil it with castor oil. and put it away. But that is only in rare cases if it is properly seasoned. The more that it is seasoned the better. I do 't think there is a right way or a wrong way. Rust is the enemy.

No No, never put soap in cast iron. Grandma would roll over in her grave. Soak them in white vinegar or burn them out. Then just re season
@coolmangos5222 ай бұрын
That’s because soap used to have lye in it. Dawn dish soap is totally safe and won’t harm your seasoning.
