I found that using rubber gloves gives you more leverage and coverage when rubbing in the conditioner and cleaner. It also saves on the amount of product you're using, because it doesn't soak into the gloves. Put the jacket on and rub it in using the gloves. When doing the back of the jacket, simply put the jacket on backwards. Give it a try.

I spent HOURS researching this topic. This is what I did for my precious Roland Sands - Ronin jacket in tobacco color: //1\\ Obenauf's cleaner //2\\ Obenauf's Leather Oil for (conditioning and protection). Woooow what an incredible result, really restored the color depth and it smells like the interior of an exotic car. And MAN my 7 year old jacket was dirty!
@Anthony-du5uf2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip...did you use the cleaner for the interior of the jacket as well?
@nspinicelli2 жыл бұрын
@@Anthony-du5uf No I didn't use it for the interior. But turns out a lot of the "dirt" that was coming off wasn't just dirt, it was a brown/tinted protectant that was on the leather from the factory. It removed a lot of the gloss that I liked on the original finish from the jacket. So I would NOT use the leather cleaner. I have purchased the Saphir brand (best polishes in the world, especially for shoes) - Canadian Oil from them. It came recommended by Saphir to restore the shine, protection, and color to large items like jackets, purses, briefcases, etc. That product is available in all kinds of colors. A lot of professional car detailers and home cleaning/restoration people use Lysol for deodorizing. I learned that secret years ago and....it freaking works! Smelly sneakers? Hit them with Lysol. Smelly car vents? Don't pay for those expensive deodorizing kits. One can of Lysol will do it! (Search KZbin for some How To vids) Old, smelly leathers or work gear? Shoot the inside with Lysol. It deodorizes and kills mold/mildew, etc. Seriously! Try it for yourself. I typically go with Lemon Breeze scent. If you don't want any scent, don't worry. It typically fades after a week or so and you can't smell it any more.

My motorcycle jacket was so crusty and dirty and sweaty one summer, I just wore it in the shower 😂 naked with nothing but the jacket. I soaped it up and scrubbed it. Then turned it inside out and did the same thing. 😂 By this time my wife walked in the bathroom and saw me naked with a inside out motorcycle jacket and a large brush. She was about as confused as it gets and just shook her head and said that’s not how you clean leather. I rinsed it off. Let it hang in the living room for a few days and when it dried out, I threw some leather softener I had for the couches. Worked great. That jacket smelled great after that. It stretched bad when soaked. But it shrank right back up when it dried. My old riding buddies still laugh at me for doing that. But admit that it worked. That axo Jacket saw many good riding nights and days after that.

Soap has high alkaline so I personally wouldn't use it. Darkens the leather over time as well. I'd honestly say that the best option is getting a product thats meant for riding gear, since we're out in the sun and moving quite agile. So the leather is under constant stress.

I conditioned this big long leather coat that I've had for 15+ years for the first time ever. I used Mink Oil. It feels so damn soft now. The jacket itself wasn't worn much. It was always too big for me. I also conditioned 3 of my leather jackets for their first times ever also with Mink Oil. 2 of them I've had for 6 and 7 years. The 3rd one was a gift last year from a neighbor's friend. Hard to tell when it was conditioned last, if ever. It's from like 1981 or so.

I would suggest avoiding Mink oil, although it does soften the leather, it does this by penetrating it which causes it to break down over time. It is also known to cause leather to rot. A much safer option would be something like Obenaufs leather oil (for leather jackets) or Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP (for leather boots). I've used both and they work great on my Roland Sands jacket and leather boots.

Update... "My leather pants smell like stale piss...". I went to hang my leathers up outside in the shed to air them out... I had them hanging up in my house after spraying Febreze, and I smelled them before going outside... The smell is actually gone, very surprised. It works guys!

The jacket you are "conditioning" is a coated leather similar to the top coat on your paint... As far as I am aware you can't condition leather like that and your best bet is to just keep it clean. Same for the likes of couches and car seats
@jamesperrin56916 жыл бұрын
i just use hot soapy water inside and out and dry it with a towel then hand cream on the outside.

Is conditioning the same thing as waterproofing?
@RevZilla5 жыл бұрын
No, they aren't the same thing. Conditioning leather means to clean the leather and maintain the correct moisture/flexibility of the leather, so that it doesn't become brittle and crack. Waterproofing just means to attempt to waterproof the leather. -DrewZilla

@@RevZilla thank you so much for replying. For about a month and a half Ive asked several channels that are specifically for leather care and no one has replied until you did. I have another question. What about Armor All? Is that bad for a leather jacket?
@RevZilla5 жыл бұрын
We do not recommend using Armor All on a leather jacket, especially a motorcycle leather jacket. -DrewZilla

@@RevZilla i didn't think so but sometimes you never know. I did read a couple of places that (unscented) baby wipes were good for periodic cleaning. The logic of it makes sense, in that if its ok for a baby's skin its safe for leather, however, im not 100% comfortable with it. There are so many different things on the market and im sure that there are some home remedies that are safe.

How often do you condition a sheepskin leather jacket? Or clean it for that matter? Thank you (ps this is not a moto jacket - too soft)
@RevZilla7 жыл бұрын
You usually brush it when dry and/or use a specific sheepskin conditioner. Some suede/nubuck conditioners/cleaners might be usable. -DrewZilla

Hey Guys, love what you guys are doing and it has taught me a lot about what it means to be a motorbiker. I would just like to know how does one clean their textile jacket? Is it just a simple matter of tossing it in the washing machine or is there a more delicate way of doing it?
@RevZilla5 жыл бұрын
Most textile jackets have cleaning instructions on the tags. In general, you remove all the impact armor, hand wash in cold water, and hang to dry. -DrewZilla

What do you recommend for buffalo leather?

If it has a similar sheen (not a natural rough finish or suede), then you can use the same process. -DrewZilla

Most Belstaff jackets come with slightly waxed leather. How can we re-wax the leather to give it that beautiful waxy sheen?
@RevZilla6 жыл бұрын
I believe Belstaff sells their own wax dressing directly from their own website or their own retail stores. For cleaning waxed leather, you might want to contact Belstaff directly about their own care instructions. -DrewZilla

... any difference with suede? or cotton liner on the inside?
@RevZilla8 жыл бұрын
Suede requires specific suede cleaner. You do not want to use this process. For a cotton liner, we'd just recommend Febreze. -DrewZilla

I have one very important question: Should i trust a dry cleaner? They ask for 50$ to clean and maintain my jacket.

I would not trust a dry cleaner with an actual motorcycle jacket. You really need to use non-damaging cleaner and protectant on motorcycle leather. -DrewZilla

I took a very expensive leather coat to a dry cleaner. When I got it back it was 3 shades darker and reeked of chemicals. I never wore it again and it went in the trash.
