I watched this video months ago - and now I came back because I actually need the information! I built a potting bench and was going to paint the top, but the wood grain looked pretty nice, so I'm gonna oil it with something instead.

Very wise. Never stain as it will peel off. Much better to oil as it sinks in and nourishes the wood. 👍

Many thanks Charlie. My old deck has been in need of some love for a number of years. I started using some water based Cuprinol decking oil I had lying around from the last time and it was woeful. I truly hope they don't stop making solvent based oils any time soon. Anyway, I took look at your video and decided that the Manns oil would be just fine for my deck. Then I took a look at my bank balance and decided that the Screwfix No Nonsense might be preferable. I'm glad I made that choice because the back of the five litre can suggests there should be enough to cover 20 to 30 square meters. Right now I'm half way through my 14 square meter deck and the can is nearly empty. The boards are so old and thirsty, the oil is soaking straight in. I can literally see the oil disappear into the wood the instant the brush has moved past. This is great because I know the oil is penetratrating deep into the wood where it's needed and will provide great protection. The water based Cuprinol, on the other hand, just sat there on the surface, scratching its head and wondering what to do. The difference between the two is astonishing. Chalk and cheese. Anyway, I may chance my arm with the Manns next year. I'm assuming the deck won't be so thirsty next time.

My deck's been down a decade and still looks great. I'd agree don't pressure spray with the dirt blaster attachment or if you have the cheap boards from DIY stores that are like wafers, but mine are quality boards from a good timber merchant and I pressure spray them on a dry weekend early autumn then use the Screwfix oil which is great. I use a Wagner fence / deck sprayer and I'm done in ten mins, then do a second coat after it's dried. I've never needed restorer or scrubbed it. I then pressure spray it again around Easter and re-coat with the Screwfix oil if I think it needs it. The Screwfix oil is often two 5 ltr tubs for £40 so even cheaper than you state. Really interesting video and as for the water based stuff - forget it!

Hi Charlie, the UV protector will ensure you will NOT get the change in colour between those areas of the deck that are more exposed to the sun. Your deck area UNDER the jacuzzi and those not covered. You can already see some slight difference in colour. So if you move the jacuzzi to a different location in 3-5 years, the difference will be significant. Hope this helps. I've had lots of experience within the boating world where the sun's UV rays are a wood killer. Granted it's much amplified around the water, but given it's harsh environment it's a good barometer. If you want to keep the area the same colour over the longer period, UV protection is the way to go. Great video as usual.👍👍

Thanks mate. Don't worry about it being level. You'd have to put a big fall on it for it to drain, and you can't really do that particularly if you're putting a hot tub on it! Get yourself a leaf blower just to keep it reasonably clean. Sounds like you're nicely on top of maintenance though 👍

Great video as usual. The best brush for applying decking oil is a car cleaning brush with extending handle. The brush bristles are soft and easily reach the bottom of the groves in the deckboards. It holds a good amount of oil and because of the adjustable handle you can cover a large area without moving every minute. Everyone on the static caravan site are now using one to apply their decking oil.

That's exactly how I do it and I have a video of it but not uploaded it. The brush soaks alot of oil which does mean you will need more oil than normal but it does the job in super speed time. Great video as always

I wish I had seen this before embarking on using Osmo last year, it has weathered so badly that my brand new deck (built June 2021) needs to be completely sanded back and re-done as soon as we have the weather for it. I will be using the Manns UV oil this time around.

@@CharlieDIYte if I could share pictures they’d speak a thousand words. The heavy traffic areas as well as some others where the plant pots have been (albeit on pot feet) have suffered and now look grey and worn. I used a base coat of their UV oil, and then a top coat of Osmo anti slip. My deck is the “unconventional” type with grooves face down and smooth boards up. To me, a 7-8month life span for a treatment speaks either of a bad batch of oil, my boards not being aged enough before application or maybe it was too hot on the days I did it.

I've just used the No Nonsense clear wood treatment on my tanelised fence that was only installed a few months ago. Even with one coat the water has been beading off a treat. Also, it's the best value by a mile at £4 per litre and due to it's low viscosity can be sprayed on meaning it took very little time.

My deck is grey/black from all the grime and it looks exactly like the one in the video with all the grooves. I accidentally power washed about 4cm of it and it looks like a light brown under all of the dirt. It was probably never washed as I bought it like this from the previous owners. Very informative video, I will try to revive my deck with all the tips and tricks. I will probably have to buy a gentler nozzle for my Kärcher though.

Definitely worth pressure washing and get some of that cleaner. I've just redone mine again. It was very grimy / green. If I'm honest I didn't get all of the green off but it does look a lot better. I used the No-nosense oil just because I had a full tin of it, did a few costs and it looks much better now.

Question: Is there such a thing as an electric cleaning brush, but much larger, one that vibrates rather than rotates? Great video. I agree that the Screwfix oil is pretty good. Lasts around a year. Previously I used Owatrol Deks Olje D1 which is very good and lasts a couple of years but expensive at aorund £90 for 2.5 litres.

That Ronseal you tested..... I put it on my new decking 3 or 4 years ago. Spent 3 days sanding it off as it leaves a varnish type layer that starts flaking off. Now I've sended it I may use 1 coat of it again and then use the Screwfix clear.

Love all your videos Charlie, always so concise, well put together and informative! Thank You. After one year of 30 sq meters new joists & decking replaced and also over 130 sq m of tongue & grove pine shiplap cladding applied to the 15 year old rear garden function room @ cost of £11k The natural wood look that I want to keep is now showing signs of slight decay in places (south facing) particularly. After being assured by the carpenter- builder that we don’t have to treat or do anything! I’m not so sure about that? I’m going to take your advice and use Manns Premium UV Deck oil, or look at the Olwatrol that you mentioned later comment. Can I ask, could use this same stuff also for the large expanse of T&G pine cladding that I would use on the decking? Phil

I've used osmo quite a bit on my decking, after the two coats you get the beading of water like the others but after 3 or 4 months it stops. You def need to re oil at least once a year if not more with the osmo and I would presume the other oils. Its a constant topping up game with oil to maintain maximum protection.

Charlie, do you have any outdoor furniture? We've got a couple of teak benches and another double seat that are too big to move inside over the winter. I've tried a few things to restore the colour/ protect the wood (teak oil, Danish oil etc) but nothing lasts over the winter. I'd be interested in your thoughts on this / advice from your viewers. Yes presumably you've seen the vid bit.ly/3gmCMmE The comments below it are well worth reading and if you can't decide which way up because you've got grooves on both sides, lay them so the heart of the grain faces out so that when the board cups, it cups downwards if that makes sense.

hi charlie really helpful and comprehensive video. Wish i had seen before purchasing stuff. Few things 1. I applied using Barentine deck reviver using a wickes broom. It works fairly well 2. some decks have algae as well. Should wood reviver be applied before or afterwards 3. 1 question: Can Barrettine Anti-Slip Decking Oil be applied on top of Barrettine Decking Oil?

Thank you for very informative video! Do you have any recommendation on what to use if I want my decking grey? Can I actually achieve that? I have painted my decking but I believe even with ronseal but the paint came of with the scratches of garden chair. I really don't know what to do know.

I have yellow balau decking and was recommended Owatrol Seasonite for the first year then their Textrol. Great stuff but super pricey!

That's for sharing that. Yes, I have some Olwatrol oil I used on a steel planter I recently had made - you might have seen it in the video. I wasn't aware they do decking oils until someone else mentioned this, but I suspect it's the best of the lot, particularly for hard wood decks.

The issue of water based products being called oil is the same here in Australia where the UV can be very high in the Northern Territories. Here is a clip from a popular one in Oz: "Intergrain UltraDeck® Timber Oil is a long lasting, high performance, water based coating designed to enhance the natural colour of all exterior timber". At least they state the facts. What I have learnt from using pretty much all solutions is to give the original container and the tray/bucket a good shake or stir as the solids just settle at the bottom.

Thanks Brian. It's cynical marketing, isn't it. Yes the shaking issue reinforces the benefit of it being in a tin you can open, rather than a rectangular can but obviously it's cheaper to ship in a rectangular can.

Hi Charlie - the deck cleaning solution worked very well indeed. Have you put anything different under the hot tub to stop the same issues? I am a little surprised that you didn't use Zinsser BIN - I know it is your favourite! I was gobsmacked earlier when browsing Amazon France for Fugi/Cramer silicone tools as there is a link to your KZbin video on How to apply Silicone - you are becoming famous in France!

Ha, you know me too well Mat. Good old Zinsser!! For the time being In going to just rely on the Lay-Z-Spa mat, and when I've got a moment I'm going to build a secondary plinth for it to sit on, with a sacrificial deck and vents around the side. That's hilarious. Teaching the French how to silicone. I bet they're not very happy about that 🤣

Great video. I need to revive my aging and previously wood stained decking. Whether I can oil it will depend on if I can remove the previous paint. One thought though, if all wood even treated needs care and maintenance, eg sheds fencing decking, what's to stop the frame of the decking underneath rotting whilst the top looks nice. It's still exposed to moisture but I guess not UV. Would it be worth putting something like creocote on the before laying the boards? And even the underside of the boards for that matter...? The same could be said for the underside of a shed... This would be if you really wanted to care for it and have it last as long as possible.

Hi Charlie. I have no decking and never likely to but that was a great review and comparison. Just wondered if the waxy types increase slip issues. Also, are there any issues with interaction of pool/tub chemicals - wondered whether that might have been a factor with your underlining degradation ? Keep up the great work. 👍

Thanks Rod. I think No to both. I've never had any chemicals from the tub spill out leak out. There's a drain off at the back. And the Osmo doesn't feel any less grippy Ryan the others. If anything more so because the wax gives it a softer feel (but I could be imagining that 😉👍🏻

Very useful video to get the landscape of available products and techniques 👍 my own experience: very happy with the Mann decking oil, it's a proper oil, not like the water based Ronseal "coloring (varn)(rubb)ish" I was using before. Day and night, I am sorry but water based products are not quite there yet, a long way to go. Osmo telescospic pole: pole broken in less than 5 minutes, there must be much better out there for the price. Barrettine Mould & Mildew cleaner: does a okay job, but is very expensive for what it is - some diluted sodium hypochlorite for swimming pool patios will do a better job for much less money. In any case, no matter the tools, products and techniques, maintaining a deck exposed North remains a real pain in the backside...very time consuming.

what's the max time I can't leave the deck after cleaning before oiling? applied cleaner and scrubbed but it gives rain later this week and off on holiday on Friday so will likely be a week or two before I can oil, will the cleaned wood be ok still?

Good question. I think you'll get more longevity than if you were to just use a stain as the idea of the oil is it should sink in (assuming it's solvent not water based).

I haven't tried that, Anna. I was hoping to try out the Osmo anti slip but they sent be the wrong tin. I would say though that as long as you keep it will maintained, you shouldn't need anti slip paint.

Hi Charlie How about looking at the best tiling spacers to use. I’ve used the traditional + for years but I see several new types that lift the tiles to ensure they are level. However I worry whether this could weaken the bond. What do you think..?

Thanks for the video as always. Do you know what the active ingredient is in the decking cleaner? I'd read a suggestion for oxygenated bleach, and am wondering how a bulk ebay buy would stack up as a budget alternative.

@@CharlieDIYte cheers. Didn't appreciate how cheap the cleaner was. Fwiw I tried the oxygenated bleach by way of oxy power as it was in my cupboard (and that's the main ingredient anyway). It worked well. It's safe for plants, etc. so if you need that quality it's worth a look.

It's a tricky one. Everyone says go composite if you can afford it but you have to buy a decent quality one as some can bleach/degrade in the sun, and then you've got the system to screw down to fix it with. On balance though, if you can find one you like, composite is probably the way to go. Make sure you treat the joists underneath though/ name sure they're well ventilated as otherwise you'll be taking up the deck to replace the joists - which will defeat the object of putting down that indestructible deck!

Had the same problem Charlie and it kept reacuring so I ended up cutting a hexagon Same size of the hottub and shuttering it up with flagstones on the end as shuttering to the same hight of the decking and filling it with concrete and reattached the decking to the concrete and never looked back

What a fantastic solution David. I'll probably end up doing something similar. Why I didn't just lay flag stones in the first place is a mystery to me!! Would have been so much easier to construct too!! I'm going to build a circular, sacrificial plinth that the hot tub can sit on, with air vents round the side. Oil it to within an inch of its life now I've got so much spare oil kicking around and see how I get on with that. Not a priority right now though so maybe a job for later in the summer/ the spring. First thing I've got to do is sort out the inflatable cover which is hopeless and no longer inflates in spite of me fixing 12 leaks in it!
