How to oil a deck

Thank you very much appreciated. Very clear to understand. I feel confident now. I have done deck clean,deck wash and it's dry. Now for the first coat of Aqua deck. Thank goodness the guy at at Bunnings at Young NSW. Talked me into buying all the correct products. I thought it was a lot of money at the time. Now I know it's worth every cent!😊thank again!

I gave my kids a gallon of this to protect their deck for their 18th birthdays. I told them they should use deck cleaner first, then deck protection. Apparently I'm now going to be a grand dad despite them protecting their decks. I should have showed them this video so the deck protectant was more effective.

@ Andy, sorry mate but you are using interchangeable terms for water based and oil based coatings (incorrect). Oil based decking stain will last years longer than water based, as the oil penetrates the timber whereas water based coats the top of the timber only. Oil based stain should last a minimum of 4 - 5 years then just needs a quick spray with a pressure washer, no need for deck wash, sanding or anything else, just apply new oil based coating.. John

Mine lasted about 3 years before it started looking like it needed a refresher. On the new deck we had put down 2 coats. This time I’ll consider 3.

I used Ardec oil it did not look like it should of I only did a small 1"x4" sample section of wood and they refused to exchange it or give me my money back

They don't tell you that if you leave maintenance coat to long, or that eventually, you will have to sand the whole deck to be rid of "paint like" opaque finish.

@@richardparnell8402 Well guess what...... This garbage is not oil bases or oil anything, it should be against the law as misrepresentation. When you think about it how can a water based product be an oil, they just don't mix. Water-based=latex or acrylic, just like paint and just like paint requires time and costly sanding as soon as it cracks, flakes or breaks down in some way....and it will!

@@brewsterly2927 causing chipping and blotchiness? So my decks back to square one I'm pretty sure I'm going to give it a light sand and use an oil-based sealer. It has three different types of oil I forget the name starts with a c Cobalt maybe. It's a clear so I'm not sure what to expect all I know is I think I dodged about not using the other stuff. And now because of KZbin I didn't even go with one with that has tint. Good conversation, the water based sealers are just no good eh?

Zero oil is left on the deck, all of the solvent evaporates. The only thing left on the deck is a film of plastic and plastic pigments.

The strong deck wash is oxalic acid based (many cheap generic clones around) the only better commercial one is Proclean by Cutek (Australia), that can be left on longer to remove mill glaze or stuborn stains and does not matter if it dries out. A milder cleaner is napisan or a 'no name' generic nappy wash, active ingredient is sodium perborate. So yeah, you're on the right track.
