How to Rejuvenate a Weathered, Grey Deck! Oiling a deck is a fairly straight forward job but once the deck gets a little weathered a lot of care needs to be taken during the prep stage to ensure that you get the best result you can. In this video, l take you through the process of how to oil a deck that has been weathered and started to go grey.
I hope you enjoy it 👍😁🇦🇺

Great stuff, probably wouldn't sand to such a high grit, 80-120 so the oil actually "penetrates into the deck" 😌 Also, if you didn't clean all the grey out and just clear coated.. with a penetrative oil like the cutek, the grey is meant to return!

Love that Cutek oil. I'm right in the middle of redecking the back deck and recycling some of the boards onto a new 'retreat' area. Gunna flip the old decking boards and hit 'em with the sander before laying them and oiling. We clad part of the front and back of the house with horizontal bamboo, 135mm deck boards, 20mm spacing, in front of black painted cement sheet (with a 3mm spacer running vertical on every stud). The east side gets washed and re-oiled every 12 months. The west side, every six (we're about 500 metres from Westernport Bay, looking towards the Mornington Peninsula so that side cops all the weather). The back takes about an hour to do and twice that when I wash it (once a year). The east side, front, takes twice that long and gets washed every couple of years (when the spider population gets outa control 🤣🤣). The deck is a two day affair if the weather is OK and the dog isnt digging holes and deciding to show us his treasures 🤣🤣 I just enjoy looking at how the oil makes everything pop. Great job Shane. I know your pain re. 'tennis elbow' except mine is 'softball shoulder' 🤣🤣😷. Sit back, enjoy a 🍺 and admire your handy work 👍

I love Shane's videos....... but that phrase makes me cringe every time l hear it! You see a "knacker" here in Ireland is another name for a scumbag. The lowest of the low. If you want to insult someone you'd call them a knacker. I've often wondered what Shane means by it? I bet it has a very innocent context and meaning.

Haha mate you're a legend! I just found your channel :D I started my channel only a few months ago and have a video about how to get decking oil and all that Cabot's cleaner for free if you're interested. It was one of my very first videos so it's not very good lol. I could indeed take a lesson from you on how to pump out shorter videos that's for sure. But it's all a learning experience. Anyway you have another follower. Cheers mate!

You said you like that weathered gray look on your deck? Well my neglected old deck had turned black until I took the pressure washer to it. Now I’m back to that natural big brown deck that I know and love so well. Putting oil on my deck might make it too slippery so I’m thinking of using something else. Great tips though. ❤️💪😎👍❤️

I also love that grey look. I'm curious to know if you oiled the deck when you first built it or did you just leave it raw?
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads Жыл бұрын
G'day Ben....yeah l love the grey look as well but in an effort to extend the life of the timber l needed to re-coat it. When l built it, l oiled it. It needs doing every year or so which really isn't a very big job and it looks good. I'm actually about to redo all the decks in a week or so....just in time for summer. Cheers 😁

Nice Video Knackers 🇦🇺🍻👍, mate dad joke had me on the ground 😳🧐, not in laughter though 😔🙃😁😁 however me reckons the oil base finish is more conducive to areas near to salt water ?. I like the water based finish & I suppose it’s trial & error 🇦🇺🇦🇺🍻🍻🍻👍👍👍👍

I wasn't surprised to hear that your deck was old and weathered!!! I might have missed it but did you say what timber the deck was made from? Looked bloody amazing knackers!
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 3 жыл бұрын
😂...Cheers Ryno....mate the timber is called Tonka. I love it. It doesn't leach which is awesome so you can have them on your nice exposed ag concrete driveway and you can get a fairly large post that isn't laminated, and cracking is minimal....and l mean minimal! The only drawback is that it's incredibly dense which makes it very heavy and it's like chiseling steel as l found out erecting the deck 😂 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺

@@diyforknuckleheads Thats amazing, I had not heard of it before. I'll stay away from it, considering how you just said it was rock hard and made your erection a difficult job to handle. It was also a great tip knackers!!!! hahah Cheers mate

Love the videos. I have a flooring question for you. I have a hardwood floor with double sided carpet tape on that I need to remove. I used to live in the US and we had a product there called Murphy’s Oil Soap that would get it up and not harm the floors. Do you have any recommendations on products here in Australia or a way to safely remove the tape residue? Thanks. Milton
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Milton! In regard to the tape residue, try Planet Ark's "Orange Power". It's worth a crack and you can get it from Woolies or Coles. Good luck 👍😁🇦🇺

Nice work, love cutek even here in Canada 🇨🇦 in our harsh winters. Do you remember what colour tone you added to the oil? Or was it just clear coat? Oiling my deck this week again. Second time using cutek, first time was clear with rustic gold added.
@diyforknuckleheads
@diyforknuckleheads Ай бұрын
Thanks mate.....I didn't add any colour tone....just clear. The only issue with clear is that you need to oil it more often if you want to retain the vibrant colour 👍

It is a mistake to sand a deck with fine sandpaper, especially with a power sander. This actually seals the grain of the wood and prevents oil from fully penetrating into the wood. I would us nothing finer than a 100 grit. Many manufactures of deck finishes would say nothing finer than 80 grit.I do agree with using an oil finish, rather than any of the water based products. this is imperative with the harder decking woods such as ipe or mahogany.

Hi. The wood is called Tonka.....l love it! It doesn't leach tannins which is the curse of hardwood decking....It's very stable and you can buy a large solid post that isn't laminated and has very little cracking....if any....for a large post. Thanks for watching 👍👍😁🇦🇺
