I did a complete set of professional dumbbells, but to do the cleaning, I used a wire brush and naval jelly. it is pretty cheap, probably cheaper than all that vinegar. I just brushed off the loose rust, brushed the piece with the naval jelly, and rinsed, brushed lightly again with water, dry, prime and paint.

It's always better to get back to bare metal, use an etching primer and then paint. Hammerite is like shampoo and conditioner in one. It doesn't clean as well as shampo and doesn't condition as well as conditioner

For black semi gloss is the best by rust oleum 2x. Has primer and paint in one can. Just shake it up really good. Also use wood or something to lift up the plate. Or else the card board sticks to the plates.

If you wait four or five days, the water will turn a dark brown and a brown or black foam will form on the surface. I also learned not to try to take the paint all the way off with soaking and brushing. Take only the rust off and then repaint it.

I don't know why a lot of people use vinegar to clean and take rust off their weight plates. Just use WD-40. You only need to leave it for 10 mins and then use a wire brush to take off the peeling rust. The WD-40 also protects your weight plates from rust for 8 years! Wash the plates with soapy water, spray with WD-40 again, leave dry and then paint them. I used Hammerite Hammertone spray paint. This further protects from rust.

@KentsGarageGym
@KentsGarageGym 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe! my weights were soaked in both vinegar and water. washing them with water afterwards probably isn't bad as long as it's dried immediately. I just checked out krylon. there was a video of a guy spray painting his grill. I'd be interested in trying krylon. Rustoleum seems alright, but after time with the weights and some ware and tare, small areas of rust are still around like at the end of the video. I'd love to know how your project works out.

Kent, there is a faster method which I'm going to experiment on tomorrow. You just wire-brush the weights to get excess rust off. Then use Rust-Oleum RUST REFORMER...spray it directly on any remaining rust. Let it dry, then use Rust-Oleum paint over that. If it works ok I'll let you know. I'm jealous of your home gym. I have only free weights/bars at home but still go to a regular gym as well.
@KentsGarageGym
@KentsGarageGym 5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know how it comes out! Or more like I'd like to know how it looks in about 1/2 a year, that's when rust will reappear if it does at all.
@CoopyKat
@CoopyKat 5 жыл бұрын
@@KentsGarageGym The key is once removing the rust, coat it with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer. 24 hours later, use Rust-oleum spray paint. That will hopefully keep rust away...and yes I'll let you know how it turns out. All the weights I had were covered with rust. I forgot an important step I took: soaked all weights in 1/2 Distilled White Vinegar/Half water for 24 hours. Then used a wire brush to get any remaining rust off (hardly any at all). Then dry...then Rust-Oleum Reformer. Next is the Rust-Oleum spray paint. I chose "Hammered" - a metallic look. When that's finished I'll update you.

I've heard that. I'd like to try that sometime, but i it costs a lot more to buy that much coke

Its the phosphoric acid in coke. You can get products like Ospho, and they will turn the rust back to iron.

I soaked my weights for a bout a week and in the end the water was really dark brown and the rust had built up on the water as yellow foam... I got all of the rust off the weights but I kinda forgot to dry them well enough, so the rust came back a little after a few days...

Thought the same way and asked myself why he wasn't using a plastic tub. It would have been better using plastic.
