I did a complete set of professional dumbbells, but to do the cleaning, I used a wire brush and naval jelly. it is pretty cheap, probably cheaper than all that vinegar. I don't know why a lot of people use vinegar to clean and take rust off their weight plates. Just use WD-40. You only need to leave it for 10 mins and then use a wire brush to take off the peeling rust. The WD-40 also protects your weight plates from rust for 8 years! Wash the plates with soapy water, spray with WD-40 again, leave dry and then paint them. I used Hammerite Hammertone spray paint. This further protects from rust.

Kent, there is a faster method which I'm going to experiment on tomorrow. You just wire-brush the weights to get excess rust off. Then use Rust-Oleum RUST REFORMER...spray it directly on any remaining rust. Let it dry, then use Rust-Oleum paint over that. If it works ok I'll let you know. I'm jealous of your home gym. I have only free weights/bars at home but still go to a regular gym as well.
@KentsGarageGym5 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know how it comes out! Or more like I'd like to know how it looks in about 1/2 a year, that's when rust will reappear if it does at all.

@@KentsGarageGym The key is once removing the rust, coat it with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer. 24 hours later, use Rust-oleum spray paint. That will hopefully keep rust away...and yes I'll let you know how it turns out. All the weights I had were covered with rust. I forgot an important step I took: soaked all weights in 1/2 Distilled White Vinegar/Half water for 24 hours. Then used a wire brush to get any remaining rust off (hardly any at all). Then dry...then Rust-Oleum Reformer. Next is the Rust-Oleum spray paint. I chose "Hammered" - a metallic look. When that's finished I'll update you.
