Unfortunately my 12 year old dog’s teeth are much worse. I did research to find the best products to soften the tartar, and a dental device that removes it. He is always very cooperative with anything that I need to do to him so I’m hoping it will go well. I really don’t want him to go under anesthesia, especially at his age.

Anesthesia is very safe even for elderly dogs... It's a myth that it's not! A soft ADA toothbrush and dog specific toothpaste will do wonders over time with getting rid of the tarter along with using a finger nail to start the process of getting it off. However getting up under the gum line will have to be done by professional dental cleaning by a veterinarian. Brushing your dogs teeth several times a day or atleast once a day will help all dogs stave off heart disease (valvular disease aka endocarditis), but it's especially important in older dogs and one's that haven't had their teeth brush or cleaned on a regular basis because their the ones that suffer most from it... Remember that the enamel is a lot thinner on dog s teeth than ours so any type of scraping should be avoided unless you're trained with how to use a dental scraper. I'm sure you can find a video on here to help show the proper technique on using the multiple types of them properly. Also, just using some gauze and wiping the teeth daily is helpful. And, you can put a little non acholic Chlorhexidine rinse solution on the gauze before applying to the gums. Also, with dogs you generally only have to brush the outside of the teeth unless you able to get to the inside surfaces easily.

@Barbara Ness, this is what worked for one of our dogs that is a rescue. We feed her ground up sushi nori sheets - seaweed and other each meal. You can sit back to 3-4 times a week once the plaque and tartar is gone. This softens the build up on the teeth. Add a capful of apple cider vinegar (the kind with the mother) to their fresh drinking water. Rub the teeth with coconut oil and spirulina. I use a baby’s washcloth and a kids toothbrush from Dr Plotka’s. I also feed raw with no grains. I feed raw chicken feet, raw Turkey necks, and other size appropriate raw relatively softer boned meaty bones.

@@barbaraness4507 Barbara using Plaque Off AKA ProDen that is VOHC (Veterinarian Oral Health Counsel) approved Kelp (a kind of seaweed) as directed on the bottle is proven to reduce plaque and tarter. It's a good addition to your you dogs dental health regiment. VOHC has a good website that shows all the dental products that they recommend. The mechanism of action using the kelp is that it gets in the blood stream with oral administration and interrupts the bacteria that causes plaque to form and stick to teeth and subsequently tarter can't form. I actually have first had knowledge of it's performance which has been great.

Hi, can you tell me where you obtained the scraping tool or the brand name? I found some on Amazon, but reviews say that many are made very cheap and have defects. Thank you. I am anxious to try it on my hound dog.

I feel the same way, I have a part Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix-female, she is bossy and yappy all day long. She has no professional behavior training, so this is going to be a challenge.

It costs me like nearly $1000 each dog to get their teeth done I bought everything you can find to clean them myself, water additive....sprays...gels....chewies.... All the teeth cleaners scrapers brushes ect....but they won’t have a bar of me doing it. I have chihuahuas so small mouths hard to work in...but I noticed you work from behind so I’m going to try that position tomorrow. Thanks for this video. 🐾🦋🐾🦋🐾🦋🐾🦋🐾

Hi Gypsy, yes I can understand the challenge! Good luck with trying from behind, hold the mouth firm. And remember to treat for every mouth touch exchange-makes it a heck of a lot easier. I once removed grass seeds from i between the toes, in the webbing, of my bigger dog. I used the positive food reward as I popped the blister to extract the seeds. Mind you, this was AFTER I took him to the vet and they failed to see all of the grass seeds stuck in there.

This is HORRIBLE. DO NOT DO. SHE IS SCRAPING THE ENAMEL OFF HIS TEETH.
@blackstar1557 Жыл бұрын
The dentist does the exact same thing to people . The enamel is way way stronger than a scraper . It will be fine . Dogs don’t live long enough for it to matter . Better to get the plaque off ..
@Unknown-hu4gf Жыл бұрын
Why don't you brush you dogs teeth instead of scrapping the enamel of their teeth!
