Thank you for your info! How do you assemble the gasket back under the chimney part?
@-Jess.-18 күн бұрын
Hi! This gasket seems like it would take far more battery than a blenders. Can you recommend good replacements? It looks like you are using silicone gaskets for your pot. Also, how do you do that spoon thing without ripping the gasket?! I can never get under the outside edge of the thing. It does float if you hold it under running water. That makes it really easy to pull out from the inside edge. Something you may wish to consider if your pot experiences damage over time. I used a spoon to scoop out the coffee and that left scratches all over the filter.

Good tips, Matteo! Never tried the water+vinegar cleaning method. Gotta try it. From time to time I clean inside the basket. You can pop the filter out using a chopstick trough the funnel part. Be careful to not bend the filter Maybe if you always clean using water+vinegar you don't need to clean inside basket, but if your moka never had a good clean, I recommend to take a look inside.

Hi, I don't recommend Cafiza or similar products with aluminium moka pots because the product is too aggressive for that metal. If you have a stainless steel you can use it. I use vinegar or sodium bicarbonate. Regarding Nuova Simonelli Elli, I just spoke with the head of technician here at the factory (I work for Nuova Simonelli), and he told me that in theory Cafiza is fine was cleaning, important is to don't leave it in contact for a long time. But to be sure you can use the biocaf line from Cafiza because it is less aggressive. Also they send you their congratulations for still having the machine 😂

I discovered filter easily hides some grounds in the stem. I've not seen anyone address this. Those old grounds stuck in the stem and are unpleasant to me. I seal stem, add water through top and seal with my palm. Shake vigorously and forcefully shake out grounds holding stem. The accumulation of oils is also not appealing so I bought a stainless steel moka pot and use soap and skinny brush everytime. Perfect Italian espresso, everytime. (I'm looking for an easier solution as this is time consuming. Suggestions?) Cheers!
@matteofromtheswamps Жыл бұрын
with vinegar deep cleaning you remove oils and also the stuck grounds. One of the reason I suggest to remove gasket and filter is also to facilitate a proper cleaning of the upper part. You doing a good cleaning and I like it. Unfortunately it has to be a bit time consuming. Do you remove the filter? That can save you time.

Newbie coffee enjoyer here, what if the moka pot accumulated mold over time without proper cleaning after use, what should I do to clean the mold and the awful smell of the mold?
@matteofromtheswamps Жыл бұрын
Hi there, thanks for your comment. You just gave me an idea for a video about this. In the meantime I tell what I would do. First I would clean the moka with soap well and try to remove the moka where you can. Mould can also build inside the basket, so I would soak the parts in vinegar and water, but with a higher concentration of vinegar. Mould doesn't survive in hostile ambients, for example low pH, high concentration of salt. after a good soak in vinegar and water I will do some moka cycles with water and salt, but remember to rinse and dry the moka after that. because salt in an enemy for the aluminium (if you have an aluminium moka)
@sarak.2440 Жыл бұрын
I like the vinegar idea, but I don't think aluminum is this fragile that it can't handle some soap or the abrasive side of a sponge..
@matteofromtheswamps Жыл бұрын
The pot can handle soap. The problem is that if you don't rinse it well, you might have some soap left (saw already this happening). The abrasive side of the sponge, depending on the sponge can scratch the pot. The problem then can be oils stuck in the scratches and hard to remove it without soap.

I don't really measure the quantity in the bowl for the immersion, I'd say 5 parts water and 1 part vinegar. I prefer the second way for deep cleaning, it's faster. You can decide which one you prefer. If you put less vinegar you should keep the parts immersed for longer.

Thanks, Matteo! But why so many online shops who specialise on coffee and its accessories suggest not to clean moka pots to preserve that "magic" coffee flavour?
@matteofromtheswamps3 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexandre, Thanks for this question. I don't know why they say that, maybe they want to see your moka pot to get ruined in a shorter time so you go to buy a new one (that is their interest). The reality is there is not "preserve the coffee flavour". flavours and aromas are mostly volatile compounds, getting oxidise buy oxygen. the components that stays on the pot are organic compounds, such as coffee oils. In contact with oxygen these compounds can give a rancid flavours to your next brews. Also carbohydrates can remain on the moka and with the presents of bacteria and spores in the air, with the right environment they can create mould. That's why for me is very important taking care of your moka pot. Sorry for all this "science" :)

I just purchased a new Bialetti Birkka. The cleaning information provided by Bialetti has Changed. The company now recommends feel cleaning with water and 2 teaspoons of vinegar. They also instruct you to then place your pot on the stove as you would when making espresso and brew the water/vinegar mixture. Toss the cleaning solution and wash as you would daily.

I brew my coffee all the time with my caffettiera and it would take too much time to disassemble it for each use. Usually I just rinse it with the water. When I scrub it , I use a sponge just for it which has never seen any detergent and do it maybe every day. And disassemble it maybe every second or third day. Cleaning with vinegar is a good idea, I should try it. The most important thing about the cleaning happens before the cleaning even starts and that is emptying the pot immediatelly after the coffee is made. I've been making a mistake before of leaving it in and you end up with really thick and stubborn foul smelling residue.

How often do you deep clean?
@matteofromtheswamps3 жыл бұрын
It really depends how much I use it. Usually once a week, if I use it everyday.

I didn't know how to get rid of the stains in the bottom part - hopefully this will help. Mille grazie!

thank you for the tips, can we use citrid acid if we dont have vinegar?
@matteofromtheswamps11 ай бұрын
No I don't suggest that. citric acid is different than acetic acid. It's a bit stronger. You risk to damage the pot

I do some weird set up after I hand dry my moka hahah. I leave the lid open and I put the silicone/rubber ring hanging on the plastic knob that's screwed on top of the lid to finish drying. I don’t know if mold can form on the silicone/rubber rings and ruin it, but a few times I was in a rush and didn't dab the ring to soak up some of the excess water, i ended up though hanging the ring to dry hanging on the lids knob. The funnel I do the same away. The filter I usually balance it leaning it against the handle and the back of the moka. If it falls I'll turn it around. Because gravity. Or I'll just lay it down with the parts. I do completely dry the boiler. I hand dry it all. Except, well, underneath the sprouts tunnel. That I blow under. Listen to these tips. I'm fed up with reading Amazon reviews on their moka pots are rusty and oxidation occurred 🤦♂️. Read the instructions.

Love the hanging gasket! Certain mould can ruin silicon but hey, we are talking about black mould like could happen in the shower and no worries it is really hard it happens with the moka, especially to you.

So grateful for your channel! I've learned so much. Just moved to Italy and want to make my coffee the right way, and thanks to you, I'm a pro!

Thank you very much for your support and the nice words. Be careful Italians are fussy about washing the moka pot :)

A very helpful video. I always rinse my moka pot and air dry; but I'll give it a good clean, as instructed.

It’s better to give a nice clean to remove the oils

Thank You, very helpful! Do you think stainless steel Moka Pots seem less likely to leech metal into the coffee from the acidic nature of the coffee or vinegar than aluminum? Thanks Again.
@matteofromtheswamps Жыл бұрын
Stainless Steel definitely is more safe in terms of metal also more durable. You also need to think that is vinegar there is only 3% of acid, plus I suggest to dilute the vinegar and not place it on it's own. So the risk is very minimal.

How do you suggest to clean the top reservoir? I get a good build up of residue. I've tried letting it sit over night in water, scrapping it off ( which is a no, no, of course.). What do you suggest for this? Thanks!
@-COBRA7 ай бұрын
9/10. I recommend to disassemble the filter part too. Just push the filter plate from the bottom hole of funnel with chop stick and look and all the burned coffee there. Now you can clean it after every use.
@matteofromtheswamps7 ай бұрын
The problem in that is that you risk to bend the filter. I used to do it as well. Hard to recommend. Also not all the baskets are made in the same way. But that is a nice way to deep clean it. 👍

I rinse daily, take off gaskets maybe monthly, deep clean with vinegar yearly at best. I have never seen any mold after years of this technique. I'm sure your regiment of cleaning is more appropriate. lol Great video.
@matteofromtheswamps Жыл бұрын
Imagine that the usual consumer never take off the gasket. So your way of cleaning is already good. The first rule is to keep the pot dry and away from humidity.

Grazie! I have a Moka that has been neglected for some time and hasn’t been cleaned properly in some time so it’s stained pretty badly. How long would you recommend I deep clean?
@matteofromtheswamps2 жыл бұрын
For something like this I would recommend water and bicarbonate in the boiler. Also a tricky part you need to take care of is the gap in between the funnel and the mesh where you place the ground coffee, there can be some mould build up inside. For the rest I suggest you hot water and vinegar, like I show in the video.
