Today I show you where and how to start cleaning up from smoke damage.
I left the house with a pot of chicken on the stove and returned home 2 house later to ashes. Hopefully we can get the smell out of our house but it's a lot of work!

I can tell by your expression that this just has defeated you. Praise God that you are all okay and your house is still standing. No one blames you Jennifer. It was simply a slip of the mind. Nothing more. Please don't let it get you down. I wish nothing more, than to be your neighbor right now. I'd be there on my hands and knees scrubbing right along with the two of you. I bet all of your watchers feel the same way. Take each day as it comes, try not to over do it and soon it will be behind you. xoxo

Use your crockpot to simmer it on low. Not much of a chance it going dry as fast. Hope it cleans up for you. Sometimes mishaps happen and we have to do a job we’ve put off. Makes it more worthwhile when done.

I did the very same thing about 30 yrs ago, Jennifer. Let me start by saying, "It isn't the end of the world even though you probably feel that way about now." Our insurance covered replacing the cabinet above the stove and the counter top, but the cleaning we did ourselves. We rented carpet cleaners and did a lot of scrubbing. Now that many years have passed it doesn't seem bad at all, but at the time I shed quite a few tears and felt very guilty! Life goes on, hugs to both of you.

Was coming to leave the same suggestion...I had a small kitchen fire and had to have the duct system cleaned as well, because it was affected since the heater was running and contaminated the whole system so it kept blowing smoke stink when it came on. Also- if you haven't already- change your filter and keep checking it and change as needed :)

I think they make portable air purifiers maybe that would help and a defuser that uses essential oils that might make the air smell better

Jennifer and Chad ..My heart goes out to you ❤️ I left a pot of eggs on the stove to hard boil and got an unexpected invitation out to dinner with my brother. Came home to a very smoke filled apartment and the pot was on the verge of catching fire. (Have since started using my instant pot for eggs! ) I NEVER leave anything simmering on the stove now.. lesson learned. Cried for days with all the cleaning I had to do 😢 Had to clean everything down to the weatherstripping in the front door. You’ll be surprised where you will catch a whiff of it ! You are a strong woman with god looking down on you.. you will get through this!

When I was 19, my husband and I were newly married and living in our first apartment on base in Illinois (he was in the Navy, we're from CA, so far away from home). We loved, and still do, going to the movies! Well, I had a large pot of chicken rapidly boiling when we "left" to catch a movie. As we were watching the movie, about 1/3 of the way along, I suddenly remembered that I didn't turn off that pot! We drove back immediately, and thank goodness it was still boiling. It must have had a lot of water in it with the lid on. I was so scared on that ride home that the whole apartment complex could have burned down, remember I was only 19, so I thought the worst! Anyways, my husband was not mad at all, he was disappointed about missing the movie. 😂 Now, I'm 45, and over the years have left something alone in the kitchen, while at home. One time, I fell asleep waking up to the smoke alarm. I have gotten better, but it still happens to all of us. I do however, never leave the house without checking the stove, never leaving it on. We are all human, not perfect. We have a 16 yr old and 12 year old daughters, and we teach them about safety in the kitchen. Basically, they are not allowed to use the stove top if we leave on an errand. 😂 I just want you to know how much I enjoy your videos on everything! I admire your dedication in making the videos, they are fun to watch, I learn so much! You're so sweet!💗 Happy cleaning! Merry Christmas! Ps. What a wonderful husband you have to help you clean, had to mention his efforts too.😊👌

When you’ve finished cleaning invest in a thermal fogging...I’m over facilities management for college dorms I’ve seen floods and fires (food, electrical, and personal use smoking tobacco and other )... the thermal fogging and order seal paint are the only things that work....it’s like heating up oranges and cloves but to the max...fog the whole home but test the scent(before committing to the whole house) perhaps in your garage

Jennifer that is a huge undertaking!! You are on the right track though..time to repaint and re decorate .. add essential oils in the filters any citrus will do and it helps. As far as anything with fabric such as carpet and couches I’m afraid you’ll have to replace as it will always linger. Curtains you can wash and again add some citrus essential oils in the washing in will help.. This never happened to me but what did happen was a SEPTIC BACK UP!!!OMGGGG I could have died from that stench. It was mid July and we were away for five days because our house was on the market for sale. Our agent noticed it and called us to come home ASAP..so you can imagine what we came home to. We had to literally remove 5ft off the ground of drywall and we had to redo our whole basement. 5 months later the smell finally left.. I feel your pain girl, don’t over do it though as it is back breaking work. Go as far as you can and hire a company to do the rest. Best of luck 💕💕

Wow! Doing all this after you had surgery! If I had some crazy money, I would pay for y’all to have it professionally cleaned! However, I am sure you will do an even better job! Don’t over do it please!❤️👍🙏

What an unfortunate accident! It would be difficult at any time, but right now you would far rather be working on producing the wonderful smells of Christmas than cleaning up the odor of smoke! Bless you and Grandpa, you are such very hard workers! Your kitchen just shines! To double check that the odor is completely eradicated, leave your house for a few hours and when you return you will immediately be able to tell if any odor remains. If you stay in the house, your nose can become 'blind' to the odor, but anyone walking in would notice it.

I just have to say I appreciate how committed you and Grandpa are to keeping your home so well taken care of. That is a lot of hard work but hard work always pays off. You have such a beautiful home. By the way you and Chad were pretty cute on Julies vlog all cuddled up together on the couch. It was just the cutest watching you two. 🥰

Way back when my dad would paint rooms with strong paints from the 1970s he would put pails of water in the rooms and slice a couple of onions in half and set them out about the room, the smell was way better the next day ,worth a try ,btw your doing fantastic!God bless you both🙏🏻🥰

You will get it done but do not over whelm yourself. The minimalist mom gives great advise in how to take on a project. You may not need draws but instead plastic basket organizers. It really helps. We all use mason jars for everything. There is a shortage for the plastic covers that I use for example to put leftover soup in. Did you know the Hellman's mayo lid fits the reg mouth jar perfectly. Re purposing plastic. I had a walnut hand grinder lid just wear out and I tried the lid from a chip can and it fits perfectly. I was A little long today but I think you have it under control .

You are a ROCK STAR Jennifer! To do all of this just days before Christmas and what a double edged sword...your house is so clean leading up to Christmas and you can hardly have a visitor this year!!! (2020 will be a good year to have in our rear view mirrors!!!😉) BTW, have you tried the cleaning hack yet for your sheets (clothing) using 1 cup of powdered detergent, one quarter cup of Borax and one quarter cup of washing soda. You are told to put your items (sheets for eg.) in the tub with the washing powders and HOT water. Let them soak for 4 hours, stirring them every hour. Then wring them out and wash them as usual in the washer. It cleans and freshens them beautifully! I have even done our coats using this recipe in the washer. I just let it agitate for a minute and shut it off and do that every hour and at the four hour mark just let it finish washing as usual. Works like a charm! Even my husband was impressed.... Stay well and leave yourself a couple days to rest up so you and Chad can enjoy that clean house and Christmas! Lots of love and Merry Christmas from 🇨🇦

Bless your heart, take care, my neighbor had a protein fire also, there were no flames, but the firemen said 5 more minutes, and there would of been flames. Thank the Lord you got home when you did. Love ❤️ Faye from Ohio.

I’m just glade you are ok. The house can be cleaned even tho it’s a pain in the you know what but, you can’t be replaced. God was with. You and protected you. I’ll be thinking of you while we move some stuff to our new used home. The home is 1480 sq ft 1965 home but has been extremely well loved and cared for. Bruce said when we walked through it last month something said to him welcome home. I’m leaving it as is for the most part because this lady took such care of it. Merry Christmas and again thank you Heavenly Father that nothing happened to Grandma Griffiths. Sorry this happened.

I know you want to get it done so the smell goes away, but you don’t want to wear yourself out and get sick. I pray you have a wonderful Christmas. Sending 💓’s. Shelli

Great Job! Just a thought though maybe line the tops of your cabinets with newspaper or another type of paper so that They won't get dusty and just switch out the paper periodically. Also maybe put Your Smell Good concoction in a crock pot instead of on top of the stove. Thanks for Sharing. Take Care and God Bless.

The day this “incident” happened you went to the doctor because you weren’t feeling well, Jennifer. I hope that you are feeling better and aren’t overdoing it, since your surgery wasn’t that long ago. You are the “Energizer Bunny” but you may need to become “Sleeping Beauty”!

Oh dear, I truly understand the smoke smell. We had gone to a steak supper some years ago and our woodstove down drafted, all the smoked came into our cellar which is where we lived while building our home upstairs. It was in EVERYTHING 🤧 we smelled it for day’s no matter what we did but eventually it dissipated. If we have any kind of a smell now we plug in our air purifier which works wonders. Not very expensive but great to have around. Praying for you both 🙏🏻
