After cleaning in acetone I will wash my brushes with soap and water. Then put a bit of cuticle oil on, it keeps them soft and makes them last longer. I appreciate reading about disposing of acetone which is something I never even thought about. Thanks for the in-depth thought-provoking vids and including dance clip :) you brighten my day! Great video! Ok this seems really dumb, but the last time I was painting my nails I was thinking about how to get the perfect amount of polish on the brush before applying. We always see you applying the polish to the nail, but you don't show how you get excess polish off the brush after dipping in the bottle. I thought that might be a good 101 video...

I use nail polish thinner to clean my brushes because it is less damaging to the glue and bristles than acetone, but still dissolves the polish. You can also keep small amounts acetone/thinner in old polish bottles if you don't have jars!

Do you ever find that the acetone eats away at the glue inside the brushes and causes the brush hair to fall out? This happens to me with my clean up brushes a lot. Any tips to prevent this???? Thx 💜💕💜
@skiptomyluludarling85197 жыл бұрын
Erica G I try hard not to get paint that high on the brush. So when I go to clean them. I try not to saturate the ferrule. That way the glue doesn't get loosened up. I also rinse my brushes with water after acetone. And I hang them bristle side facing down. That way the water/acetone won't seep into that area as well.
@KelliMarissa7 жыл бұрын
+Erica G hey Erica, this happens to me all the time with my cleanup brush unfortunately (its elf brand, but luckily it's cheap so I buy it in bulk). But I haven't had it happen with my nail art brushes!

Thrift shops are an amazing place to find jars for super cheap! I always thought new jars would be cheap, but no! Interesting fact - you have acetone in your body! I learned that a couple weeks ago and thought it was so bizarre! Suggesting "The Ordinary" full coverage mascara and silicone primer (if you can find them!) & Ciate Glitter Flip lip gloss. I've watched other people's reviews, but they're no Kelli!!!
@TwistedQuestionMark7 жыл бұрын
Alucard Peach Yep! I've got diabetes so when I have way too much sugar, my breath gets "fruity" which is actually acetone (a ketone) building up in my system and VERY dangerous (ketacidosis). Scary stuff. Everyone around me notices it before I do. I'm so used to the smell of acetone I don't always notice until my kids tell me I smell like a grapefruit 😂😂😂 Thankfully it's rare for me!
@AlucardPeach7 жыл бұрын
MargieMama oh wow! I've heard of ketoacidosis-but I had no idea what it actually was! I have a friend who has been in a coma a few times because of it, but somehow he always comes out of it. He just never learns his lesson and take better care of himself! I know it's a sign of something dangerous, but smelling like grapefruit sounds kinda nice lol This probably sounds really odd, but sometimes I smell like maple syrup. Unfortunately it's like syrup... And sweat funk mixed. My doctors can't figure it out, but my kids joke and say I make them want pancakes lol
@KelliMarissa7 жыл бұрын
+Alucard Peach usually they're cheaper if you buy them in bulk! But yeah that's why I keep little jars like this haha! I haven't heard of The Ordinary but I'll definitely scope it out, totally don't understand the hype around those glitter flip lippies though haha.
@AlucardPeach7 жыл бұрын
Kelli Marissa The Ordinary is supposed to be a full coverage foundation for around $7. Right now you have to sign up to be emailed when it's back in stock, because it sold out so fast. I think the glitter flip looks amazing, but I'm into glitter and all things that sparkle - I just can't afford it lol! I never thought to buy jars in bulk! I save my spaghetti sauce jars and jelly jars. One good use for empty sauce jars is to pour grease from fried things (like the oil from fried chicken, or grease from hamburger) into, since it's really bad to put down the drain. *side note - bacon grease is a different story. I put that in an old mug and keep it in the fridge to use for seasoning things like beans :)

When cleaning your brushes try to not get the ferrule of the brush wet, especially with acetone. The acetone will eat the glue that holds the bristles together. Just a tip. It will lengthen the life of your brushes.
@KelliMarissa7 жыл бұрын

Ahh don't get the part of the brush wet where it connects to the slilver part. It can mess them up and make the bristles come out. They will last so much longer if you just wet the end. Then you can dab a little top coat on it and store it with it on it and it will help keep the shape
@KelliMarissa7 жыл бұрын

Fair warning: I am not a short comment type person. So most comments from me tend to resemble short novels. It is just how I am. Hey Kelli hope you are having a beautiful day. I wanted to know if you notice your nail art brushes drying out, like the actual brush fibers start to get brittle, if you clean them multiple times with acetone? Or if you have had a brush literally fall apart from the acetone disintegrating the glue that holds the bristles inside the ferrule of the brush? If so, is there any way to condition nail art brushes after using the acetone on them? Instead of just letting the acetone evaporate? I have seen videos where people have washed their brushes with dish soap afterward to rinse the dried acetone and then used either hair conditioner or fabric softener in order to keep their brushes soft? Have you heard of this technique before? Any thoughts? I just started watching your channel, like yesterday or the day before and I decided to start with your Nail Polish 101 playlist, and I am really enjoying the refresher course on all tho little details that are so very important but sometimes get lost when you are really getting into the whole nail art community. It is just so easy to get distracted by all the colors and all the possibilities that the basics almost seem less important, But they definitely are not. They are even more important so that all the new things you are learning are being done one properly prepared nails. Anyway... I am looking forward to completing my 101 studies and moving onto your other videos, Thank you for all the hard work you put into making your videos and uploading them. One last thing, I really like the "Fun Fact" portion of your videos. You seem like a super fun person with tons of energy which I think is so awesome. Have a great day, with lots of pretty clouds for you to see. Since I just learned that you love clouds.
@KelliMarissa4 жыл бұрын
Haha Kat no worries, long comments are welcome here! I have had brushes fall apart from too much acetone but one thing I sometimes do is put a tiny bit of lotion on them after cleaning just to help keep them soft and working well! Another tip is to keep from submerging the whole brush tip in, just the part with the acetone on it!

What brand do you use? CosmoProf sells acetone and pure acetone. The acetone doesn't clean my brushes, stamping plates or cuticles well at all. The pure has destroyed most of my brushes after only a few uses. I've bought from industry standard and popular brushes to Elf.
@KelliMarissa7 жыл бұрын
+Louise Fabi hey Louise, it sounds like the acetone you're using isn't 100%. Pure acetone is available at almost all drugstores, and even in car shops - and it shouldn't destroy your brushes! The only brushes of mine that get destroyed from acetone are my elf brushes, I think just because those are cheaply made!

If you place a few brushes in the acetone in the jar at a time and let them sit for a few minutes, will it destroy the bristles? Knowing my luck, I'd let it soak only to come back and find the bristles have completely dissolved!

If it's in a polish that you still want to use then pick up polish thinner (it's cheap and ya get a ton, DO NOT use acetone to thin) and start off with a few drops, shake and repeat until your polish is back to desired consistency. I think she actually did a vid a month or 2 ago about saving polishes.

+maddie miller hey Maddie, Jen is right - I do have a video about restoring old polishes (and that will fix the nail polish brush too!)

But what if your nail brushes have wooden handles and the bristles are covered in nail polish? Any tips?
@KelliMarissa6 жыл бұрын
This is how I clean my wooden brushes :) you don't dip the handle, just the bristles!

Baby food jars are small, and less than $1 at Wal-Mart. Would probably work well for this if someone can't find the little jelly jars. I was previously using nail polish remover with moisturizer to both clean up my cuticles and clean my nail brushes. However it was quickly apparent that this was a bad idea. My nail art brushes became goopy, and not all of the nail polish would come out. It was also very hard to clean my cuticles. Now since I've switched to 100% acetone, it's all much better.

I poured acetone down the sink before not knowing it was bad to do that. don't do that guys. I use a used dried out makeup wipe because they're super absorbent and I just place it in the jar of dirty acetone and it sucks it right up. I then let that dry up and then throw it away

Can it be done for peel off nail polish?

I'd suggest trying water to clean off peel off polish first and see if that works!

For the love of polish, plz help me! gel polish wont stay on me. I buff, I've used extra primer, dehydrator & wrapped my tips. So far I've used 3 different brands...HELP!!

Shellbug-Michelle Greene , I totally have the same problem! >( it's so frustrating. I subscribe to NailCareHQ, w/ Bliss Kiss and do the Fab 5 Wrap and STILL by the end of the day I have so many chips it's too embarrassing to wear a 2nd day. My end conclusion... My body does too good of a job pumping my body oil through the nail plate causing the bonding btwn polish & nail plate to separate thus leading to the chipping. : / I guess it could be worse, like not having an adequate amount of body oil and my nails peel, are brittle or break more easily : /
@shellbug31007 жыл бұрын
Cat 028 my nails r so dry & brittle! Always have been. It probably doesn't matter but it doesn't chip. It peels off as a whole & yes it's very frustrating w/all the money I have invested!!
