Does it devalue or do buyers frown upon methods to have coins cleaned or to preserve? I know collectors of coins don’t like when coins are cleaned. I’m want to build my collection By purchasing and trading and and don’t want to harm a coin for someone else’s collection . Thank you

Great question. So usually I would recommend only cleaning coins that you know are going to be kept for your own collection. Many collectors that would be purchasing coins would prefer to either have the coins uncleaned, or they may have their own preferred method to clean them. If I have any coins that I know are going to be sold or traded I usually don't do anything to them and leave that up to the purchaser to decide if they want to clean them or not. I don't think it would effect the cost of the coin, but may just be more difficult to actually sell.

I just recently bought the WDW Pressed Coin/Pennies Collection Book which it came with 30 pressed pennies from Ebay. They looked kinda tarnished. I tried the methods you showed in the video to clean the pressed pennies. When that didn't work, I used the can of Comet Cleaner. I put the pressed pennies on a paper (styroform) plate and sprinkled some of the Comet Cleaner. Then I used a wet cloth to scrub the pressed pennies. After that, I rinsed the pressed pennies and wiped them with a dry cloth. The pressed pennies came out clean and shiny!!😍😍😍

Hi Dave, I just use very warm water and baking soda, no rubbing.. just an overnight soak. it takes off some tarnish but not too much that it affects the value of the pressed coin...

That sounds like it would be a great method. Do you need to polish them at all afterwards? I know that's the one downfall with some of the other methods I've tried, adding another step at the end to make them shiny again. But I'll definitely be give the baking soda method a try. Thank you!!

In a quart jar with a lid, add *500ml of water* 50ml of regular 3% peroxide* 1weight ounce of dry citrus acid powder (couple table spoons) from the canning isle. It's known as 5-5-1 for short. It's effective, safe, cheap and it is also reusable (until the fluid gets gross)

You should get the pink stuff to clean them it works very well. I clean my pennies with the pink stuff before I press them and it works almost instantly, but it’s a little messy.

Is there any way to remove the black on zinc pennies?

hi! i’m starting a collection and used one of the machines that supplies the coins for you. i noticed after a few months that they’re starting to look a little dirty. may be a silly question, but would these methods work for those coins as well? i’m not sure what metal/material the supplied coins are made of

Those preloaded machines are usually filled with zinc (newer shiny) Pennies. Please do not use any of the methods that include an acid as it will react with the zinc and turn them black and ruin them. I would recommend a metal polish like tarn-x or another collector mentioned a product called “pink stuff” that I believe is available on Amazon. Those will work great on zinc Pennies to shine them back up. Hope this helps

i had someone once tell me that you should put dirty pennies in the machine because it helps with the traction or something. is this true at all or just a rumor?

That's an interesting theory, but not one I've heard before. We may need to test this out at some point. Have you tried it with any success?

I've noticed that since my last trip to Florida, many of the Disney machines have been switched out to the new ones that provide the pennies. I'm finally getting back to WDW in July and I'm wondering if I should bother to bring my old bag of pennies and quarters. I don't want to weigh myself down but I also don't want to miss any pennies from the older machines. What do you recommend?

There are only a couple machines lest on WDW property that still allow you to use your own pennies and to be honest I would anticipate those being changed out very soon. You most likely won't need to bring a bag full of pennies to press, maybe keep a dozen or so pennies available just in case you come one of these machines. Almost all of them now are the pre-loaded versions so not much need to bring you own pennies to WDW anymore unfortunately.

I have large streaks on my pressed pennies that are colored greenish is this because of oxidation? If it is how do I get it off

Yes that definitely sounds like oxidation, it's usually a greenish/blue color. It sounds like your coins are primarily copper so the vinegar and salt mixture may be the easiest option to try. Be careful with using an acid if any of the coins are newer mintages that are made up of mostly zinc because an acid will turn the black and there is not good way to get rid of that, you may want to do a test on a duplicate coin just to make sure there are no unwanted results before continuing with your main collection. Or you can go right to the heavy hitter and use something like a metal polish like Tarn-X which should clean it off pretty easily and works well with both copper and zinc coins. They may then be a bit dull but can be polished up afterwards to make them look like new. Hope this helps. Let's me know how they turn out
