The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzbin.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

Unless the reel got submerged or you are spraying it hard, water should not be getting to the internal parts to cause corrosion.

I find that the process described in the video, although excellent, is not fully effective for reels used in SURF FISHING. The salt spray and wind blown sand will get deep INTO your reels despite taking extreme pre-cautions. Inevitably, a fish will pull your rod/reel and entire sand spike into the sandy beach. I vacation twice a year for 2 weeks for surf and wade fishing in salt water in Florida. I rinse the entire rod and reel thoroughly with garden hose on the soft "shower" setting for at least one minute per reel. I do this daily after EVERY salt water use (2 times a day if I take a break back to the beach house). At the end of the day, I mix up a gallon bucket of water with JET DRY in it and dunk rinse the reel for another minute. This will not allow water spots crystallize inside your reel and bearings., AND will flush rinse out the salt water and most sand particles! Believe me, water spots DO crystalize INSIDE your bearings! Finally, I wipe the reel down with a damp cloth. When I return inland to my home away from the beach, I totally disassemble, clean and lubricate all my reels! The first time I did this is when I discovered crystalized water spots inside the reel visually and inside the bearings by a rotational feel check! I clean my reels and bearings with CRC Electronic Cleaner in aerosol can (WalMart). It instantly dissolves any crystalized water spots remaining and DOES NOT harm any metal or plastic materials. 15 years now, and I still have all my original reels and they perform as good as new after this process. I have had to replace a few bearings, one way clutches and screws along the way, but I am very pleased and confident with this process!

When you say Jet Dry, you mean the dishwasher stuff? This is fantastic information, and the information I was looking for! I have two reels( not even made for surf fishing) that I'm taking along to use surf fishing and want to know how to properly clean them after use.

I do not take apart my reels and mess with the inside as it is easy to get the gears out of alignment. I rely on a repair shop to do that kind of work.

I've tried everything(I live at beach and fish saltwater weekly). I fish out of a 16 ft skiff and kayaks so there is always some saltwater getting on my reels one way or another. So, I just gave up years ago. I only buy $30 reels or less, the best I can find for that price range, but I still use decent rods. I basically spend about $200 a year on replacing reels, so I guess I'm still spending very little in the grand scheme considering I'm using them approximately 40 or 50 times a year. I have had the same freshwater baitcasters and spinning reels for about 15 years and I fish fresh water probably 12-15 times a year. I'd love to use some higher quality saltwater reels again, but I just can't justify it as I guess I'm terrible at keeping them in good working order.

Buy a couple good reels and they will not only be so much smoother, they will last much longer. I have some personal reels that I have been using for well over 10 years in nothing but salt.

@@CaptChrisMyers oh I've had $200 reels with sealed technology and stainless bearings etc. Still after about a year I had issues and have lost a few. Just not worth it for a moron like me. I have the same 3 Quantum freshwater bait casters for about 14 years, but they never see saltwater of course. I live almost right on the waterway so salt just floats in the air by my house all the time. I actually may get a couple new Shimanos and a Lews I've been eyeing this winter, but they'll only be used in the boat, not the kayak and by me only. Honestly don't really mind the cheap reels though...catch the same as my buddies in the backwaters anyway. When we go out to the 10 or 30 mile buoys, I just use their equipment of course for kings and what not. Take care

What about the line (mono or braid)? It went into salt water and came back reeled into the spool? Just using towel to wipe wouldnt get salt moisture out of the packed / reeled line, right? I guess if you go out every other day its probably fine. But if i go once a month, wouldnt the spooled line that trapped salt water/moisture causing line damage or even worse reel damage? How to clean the line? Necessary? Thanks a lot!
