For debris on the bottom be sure to vacuum using the waste mode. When doing this I have to plug the outlet jet because fine sentiment Will get through the filter.

Thanks for the video it's very helpful! Over the winter I bought a house that came with and above ground pool and it was really green so I put winterizing chemicals and covered it. I just have a question in your description you have a four pack 4 gallons and two pack 8 gallons of liquid chlorine shock how many do I actually need to put in? Your welcome. Our pool holds 18,500 gallons of water. Normally to clear a green pool we use 4 gallons of the chlorine shock and 4 gallons is what we used in the video that you watched. Because our pool was so bad this spring we used 8 gallons this year in our newer green to clear video. 8 gallons is pushing the limits because the concern becomes when backwashing for a while all that chlorine can kill or weaken vegetation. And you may have to wait days to swim due to chlorine levels high. If you want to try doing it our way we would recommend doing the math on 4 gallons per 18,500 of pool water. Eventually you will learn your pool over time and tweak things to work for you. Take care and stay tuned for more 😊

Tip for the future… buy a 60 pound tub of shock granules and chlorine tabs and add one tab per 1750 gallons of water into your chlorinator or a tab float or add 5-7 scoops of shock into the skimmer baskets but add the scoops slowly I would most likely use granule over tabs or liquid chlorine to shock tho

Thanks, yes the duck is very popular 😂 If I take the time to maintain the pool like I should it prevents a lot of headaches and time wasted trying to get the pool from green to clear. I think you have to be somewhat of a disciplined person to own a pool because they can get out of hand easily in the summer heat and sun if not maintained properly.

In theory it’s a great idea and for many it’s an option that works out well. I can tell you from our experiences over the decades, easier said than done. Our winters and springs can be horrendous with wind, snow and rain. We have had failures with pool covers in times past. When factoring in the cost to purchase a cover for our large pool; it’s really a coin toss on how worth while it is. Maybe we’ll try one again down the road. I wish I checked youtube first. But last summer I had to leave for 6 weeks for work. I made an agreement with my neighbors teenage son to look after my pool. I didn't ask him to get inside and scrub it. Just check the chemical levels at least once every 5 days. I left ph balance, chlorine tablets, filters, etc. I gave that SOB 200.00 to do a good job. The pool is 18x48 with a cartridge filter. That SOB never did a thing. The filter tripped it's breaker at some point. It was so thick with algae and scum I couldn't see 2 inches down. Out of desperation, I dumped in 5 bags of shock and went through 5 filters. At best, I could only get the water to where it was semi clear, but extremely cloudy. I had to drain it, scrub it, and refill it. Never got my money back from the little snot either.

We have a similar pool. I believe it is 21'. We were always told to pour in 4 gallons of liquid shock and the algicide but we always have to buy more. Should the majority of the algae die with the shock so you don't have to use as much when you use it a few days later?

Yes. It’s hard to kill “all” the algae. Some of the algae tightly affixed to the liner edges and sides and bottom won’t die as easily. You can brush to dislodge and vacuum over time to eradicate it. So yes the majority of algae should die and less shock will be needed the next time. Take care 😊

Great question! The more I have researched your question the less qualified I feel able to address it. The common thought seems to be to drain and dilute to lower elevated cyanuric acid. I’m not sure why your levels still remain high after draining as it doesn’t make sense. Maybe drain again and fill? Maybe moderate amounts are ok on the body. My background is healthcare and I know that chlorine can impair thyroid function by competing with iodine on receptors in the thyroid. The sun can cause skin cancer as I’ve had two removed this year. Not to complain but just to add more perspective. I think if it were me, I would drain again and refill and if still issues; I would hire a pool company to resolve. Too much cya can damage the pool liner and make it difficult to stabilize your pool as well. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. By the way, some of the liquid chlorines out there don’t have cya I believe. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Sorry for responding so late to your comment. How exciting with the new pool! Seems like there’s no middle ground with pools; they are either loved or hated. If you have a local pool specialty store you can go into and ask questions that can be helpful. The store we purchased our pool at years ago still allows us (at no charge) to bring in a water sample and they test it to see what chemicals are needed and they tell you the order to use them and how. I would suggest checking for a good local pool store to use as a resource. If shocking isn’t helping maybe try flocculant. Someone somewhere probably has a you tube video on how to use it properly. Because so many people have been reaching out to us for help we hope to make more pool videos down the road. Stay tuned and thanks for watching 😊

If its a box pool like Intex chances are your pump is too small and not circulating the water properly, invest in a bigger pump and run 8-12 hours during hottest parts of the day, thats when things you don't want grow. Hope this helps

@@bullhogsbbq9658 Not true... I've run intex and Bestway pools and associate with others who have the as well for many years and the pump/filter has always done a good job cleaning the pool. More than likely the problem here is not changing the cartridge or simply re-using the cartridge too many times. I've seen people complaining about a crappy intex pump only to open the filter to see the cartridge damn near sucked inside out because it was too dirty to allow water to pass through. It's easy to blame the pump for our misuse.

Hi. First thing need to do if you haven’t yet is to test your water to check for any chemical imbalances. Do you have a sand filter like we do that you need to backwash if you haven’t? I’m wondering if it might be related to filtration. But It’s really hard to know without being at the pool. Could be not enough time given to filter it out, dirty filter, or filter needing replacement or repair. But if you have a new pool with properly functioning filter maybe give it more time and be sure to add some clarifier if you haven’t yet. In our area we have a pool store that lets you bring a water sample to them and they will analyze it and tell you what chemicals might be needed/what to try. Hope this helps 😊

@Jamer365 Mojica: the best thing is to use it a few times a week! Helps to move things around before it can grow. Also test your chemicals levels once or twice a week. If you see the water starts to get cloudy, try to get on it right away.

Testing water at least once a week and keeping the water at recommended levels helps a lot. We use shock and an algecide/clarifier combo weekly and it seems to be working well, even though the filter that came with the pool is way too small. Chlorine stabilizer was a life saver as well. It does exactly what it implies, helps maintain the chlorine levels. We've been averaging 100 degrees here, and water temp is at 88-90 for a few weeks now but we haven't had any issues with algea or cloudy water at all. Hope your pool gives you many enjoyable moments!

Yes, the skimmer is additional. It did not come with the pool. Usually the water stays somewhat cloudy when your sand gets old. If it’s been two years since changing the sand in your filter than more than likely it needs to be changed. Take care 😊

I would wait a while on the algaecide and give it time with the pump running to filter the pool water. Maybe you need some more shock. Keep an eye on things so that you backwash and rinse when you loose pressure. Hope that helps 😊

Truthfully if properly maintained during the winter by keeping the cover clean and dry by using a pump attached to a hose and when dry scooping the leaves off the cover, then you should never open green! Maintenance is the key, also if you do have algae, after you shock and clear it up you need to get a good phosphate remover and run filter overnight and vacuum to waste. Then clean filter if you have a de or cartridge filter.

Get the chlorine in asap and start circulating and use enough to “shock” it. Usually I can get away with using 4 of the product you see us use in the video for our 18,500 gallons. After it starts to clear up add some clarifier but do not over use the clarifier. Unfortunately your pool probably won’t be ready to use by Saturday but try in case you are pleasantly surprised 😊

We live in ohio . I see that you didn't cover your pool for the winter and left the water in? We leave our water in as well but we cover it. But with all the wind storms our cover has been torn off and leaving our water green after leaves and debri sit in until its warm enough to open it. We Quit covering our pool soon after we purchased our pool which was about 20 years ago because every year we would have a tarp failure except I think maybe one or two years it worked better but for the rest it was just not working out it would rip or blow off or even if it was a success there was always some of the green water on top of the cover that would end up in the pool in the spring. We just got a brand new liner installed last week and in fact, we just released a video on it if you wanna see it and in that video we describe a little bit more I think why we don’t use a tarp. Because our liner is new we decided this fall we will cover our pool and try it one more time and just try to be more diligent with it and if it’s a success, we’ll do it the following year and if not, we’ll go back to not covering our pool. If you can cover your pool in the winter, it is a good idea because that UV light in the winter hitting the pool liner does wear it out quicker. Remove phosphates by getting a good phosphate remover because all the shock in the world won’t keep the algae away unless you remove the food it eats which is phosphates 👍

I added a commercial grade liquid shock. It’s chlorine but in a higher concentration so it “shocks” your pool. In other words it raise free chlorine levels very quickly ( “shocks”). After shocking I run the pool on filter. Then usually about a day later I add some clarifier. Keep in mind you will have to backwash when your pool pressure drops giving less power to move the water 😊

18,500 gallons I used four 1 gallon containers of an ultra shock. I would suggest going to a pool store and asking them for an ultra liquid shock. What's available in my area will be different from your area. Remember it may be a while before you can swim as there will be a lot of chorine in your pool. Good Luck :)

Sorry, I can’t remember. It’s a seasonal item that I either bought at Walmart or Menards. I think it was a carry over from the year before. You can buy it online but maybe a different brand. I just went online and Walmart and Amazon have a brand. The pool store in our area always tells me I need theirs because it’s more concentrated but I have found that it doesn’t really matter as long as you follow the directions. If you pay less and get the less concentrated or if you pay more and get the more concentrated; it doesn’t matter. Good luck 👍

@@SilverLiningDayDreams living in southern NY all I can say is "ditto" on the shitty winter. Covers ( good ones) are a pricey item. But as a pool owner for a touch over thirty years they are the best option in this area. Leaves,pine needles and the cones along with whatever is going to seed and the resultant debris make winterizing a pool around here a task that must be planned. A good cover,winterizing kit,block offs for pool skimmer and return eyeball all must be procured before a nice calm sunny Saturday for the operation. Don't forget the pool air pillow to prevent the cover from resting on the pool surface and collecting water. This can result in a freeze-up and other problems. A good cover lasts maybe four years do it's cost can be spread over that and winterizing kits and pillows will be another $50. All that is required at startup is firing up the pump and filter( add water if necessary) hit with a dose of shock and a chlorine tab in the skimmer,All done BEFORE REMOVING COVER! A big mistake is uncovering first and having the sun burn off whatever winterizing is still left causing pea soup pool. Although a little cloudy,it always clears up within 24 hrs. With this method. Constant shock of the pool causes a lot of acidity which will assist the formation of algae.

Sorry for the delay. We’ve been camping. When shocking, are you using enough shock? Is my first thought. Usually not enough is used. I would suggest shocking it again with more shock. Then give it a day and test the water. For free we can take a sample of water to our local pool and spa store and they will test the water and tell us what needs to be done chemically. Maybe in your area there is a pool store that will assay your pool water. I’m sorry but it’s hard without being there to help you like I wish I could. Hope you get the green out 😊

We drain out about a little less than a third so that the waterline is under the skimmer (actually under the water inlet into the pool) enough that when all the winter precipitation comes the water/ice stay under the water inlet & skimmer. Hope that makes sense. Stay tuned for more 🙂

Thanks for the tips.. My technique has given good results: I put a 3 inch chlorine tablet in the skimmer basket, pool pump runs everyday for 8 hours(6am to 2pm). I add once a week algaecide, pool clarifier and if PH is low some armor & hammer baking soda. This has kept my pool clean.. I live in a tropical island so maybe things go about different. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear that. Here where we live, you can bring a sample of your pool water to the pool store and they willing assay it for free with their computer and give recommendations. Maybe in your area a pool store will check a sample of your pool water. My hunch is you needed more chlorine to shock it to the moon and back but hard for me to know without being there. Good luck 😊

You can do that, but for our pool the wall would possibly collapse without the water putting pressure on the wall holding it up in our harsh winter conditions. At least that’s what we were told by our pool installer years ago.

I would check with where you bought your pool from, or a local pool company where they sell pools/pumps. There are many factors to consider such as the shape and type of pool it is. We have a 18,500 gallon pool so our Hayward pump has been great for us. There are charts online through In The Swim or poolresearch.com that can be helpful as well. You’ve got this!

Technically speaking, yes the sun will lessen your chlorine levels. How much? I really don’t know as I’ve never read a good published study on that. I suspect pool stores will have a bias towards more loss to get you to buy more chemicals. Adding tabilizer will help reduce that loss. Some people in our pool videos have commented that they add their chemicals at night. We try to keep at least a puck or two in our skimmer basket and with that gradually moving into the pool that should help keep your free chlorine levels up even if there is loss. You can add a solar cover to help reduce chlorine loss as well and I’m sure there’s other tricks people may add to this thread over time, so check back 😊

We typically use 4 gallons but this year we used 8 gallons of Liquid Chlorine Pool Shock- 12.5% Sodium Hypochlorite. There is an Amazon link in the description box. It’s a lot of chlorine so one will need to be cautious when backwashing and rinsing so as not to harm or kill vegetation with all the chlorine.

The more often you run your pool pump, the better and check your free chlorine level every day or two. Always keep one or two chlorine pucks in your skimmer basket depending on how large your pool is. Use your pool because your feet and body parts touching the pool liner help to keep it clean by dislodging stuck particles and algae. There’s more, but this is what came to my mind. Because of all the ice, snow, wind and rain, we’ve had fails with it. It’s just a big mess in the spring, so we quit covering the pool. However, because we put in a new liner this year, we plan on covering it this fall and see how it goes. By covering the pool … the thought is… there will be less UV rays hitting the liner so it will last longer. So we’re covering it more so for liner longevity. That’s the long answer 😂😊

Okay so I’ve been really trying to educate myself on pool chemistry. So my pool has been green for a good while. And I’ve tried shocking it several times and nothing. I took a water sample to Leslie’s pool and according to the water sample reading. My CYA levels are super high and was told to drain my above ground pool it’s 24Ft I drained less then half way once refilled and levels are still high. Was told to drain more then half way. But I’m concerned about the pool liner. Can I lower cya without draining? Do I refill And super chlorinate shock the pool about 10gal. Let it run Then clarifying liquid in it? I’m going to to do step by step what you did I think that will work.

We were taught that way by the pool company that installed our pool approximately 20 years ago. Because it has worked well for us we continue to apply chemicals in that order (most of the time). Thanks for taking the time to post a comment with a suggestion for our viewers. Because the water is so green it is more challenging for us to see to get the debris off the bottom. Over the years we have tweaked our pool cleaning and pool maintenance to make things easier and to also decrease expenses. The small extra cost for the heavy shocking has worked out well for us to settle and soften the debris making it quite easy to see to vacuum off after the pool clears. Pool owners will have to learn their pools to determine what’s best for their pool set up in our opinion. One size doesn’t fit all. We didn’t cover the pool and we waited too long before shocking it so it turned green. Fast forward to Last year when we had a new liner installed in our pool so we did cover the pool with a cover to help keep UV light and leaves off the new liner. Hope this makes sense

We rent our home part time on Airbnb and part of the inspection by our county’s public health is the spigots and also the wash basin in the basement to make sure nothing can get past the spigot and in through the home. I forget what it’s called but they are set up such that they stop the hose water from going in the reverse direction. In the future I will be lifting our water hose out of the pool when filling it with water. I did the laughing emoji because here where we live they have assayed our water and found the chemicals in birth control pills, heart and blood pressure pills and more. Take care 😊

Not really a pool guy, but need to ask an obvious question: Why not just empty the water from the pool, scrub it down, refill the pool with a hose, and then add a few brand new clorine tablets? It seems like that would be much easier (especially with an above ground pool), yet green algae pool videos never seem to address Occam's Razor (i.e. the simplest answer is usually the best). Great questions and great thoughts. For a much smaller pool that may become a more viable option. Our larger pool holds 18,500 gallons of water. Some cons to going said route are: water is expensive (probably well over a hundred dollars to fill back up), takes quite a while to drain and pump becomes added expense, new pool water is very cold and takes days to warm up and one has to find somewhere to put all that water. If your liner is more than a couple/few yrs old, it can actually shrink fast after the water is removed, even before refilling right away. The weight of the new water, even just a few inches , can collapse the old dry liner right off the walls. I know, mine did.

Great question and we would be happy to answer it. Our pool holds 18,500 gallons and on a city lot you have to find somewhere to put all that water when you drain it. Some of the other negatives to draining are as follows: City water to fill 18,500 gallons is very expensive. If you do fill the pool back up with city water it will be ice cold and takes a couple weeks to warm up. There are stresses on a large pool like ours when drained to consider as well. Take care 😊

Yes. I followed the directions on the algaecide for an initial spring pool opening dose. The algaecide was purchased at either Walmart or Menards. I bought it the year before so I can’t remember which. I'm having so much trouble getting my water clear. It went from green green to a teal color. I put in a showing opening kit. Which was 4 bags of shock, 2 bottles of algeacide, 2 bottles of spring stain remover, and 1 bottle of clarity. Ran it for 2 days and went from green to teal. I added some clorox water clearer didn't for anything. I'm currently doing a floc treatment but it's looking the same. The water is testing all in range. But it won't get clear. I don't know what else to do

@@cavyboy99 I would check the Ph, Alkalinity, and overall chemistry of the pool and see if there is something off. Even when you have everything in order and one thing goes out that can cause what you are dealing with. If all fails try using soda Ash or regular baking soda. That will raise the Ph and can help with the bromine and alkalinity in the pool and it should start to clear. I would stop adding chemicals and let everything settle and see what you are dealing with. It gets better mine was like that for a while and it took time for mine to get back to where it is supposed to be. But I would really check the overall chemistry of the pool and take it from there.

I came to the conclusion to drain some of the pool because I have alot of algea, and sticks and stuff somehow in the middle of the pool. And frogs have an orgy in my pool all the time especially when it isn't being used. My vacuum won't get the stuff out, so this way I can get in and scoop everything out and start with some fresher water

In theory that’s a great idea and for many it’s an option that works out well. I can tell you from our experiences over the decades, easier said than done. Our winters and springs can be horrendous with wind, snow and rain. We have had failures with pool covers in times past. When factoring in the cost to purchase a cover for our large pool; it’s really a coin toss on how worth while it is. Maybe we’ll try one again down the road. Good question. I would assume the difference is the concentration. Shock is considered more potent in that it needs to raise the free chlorine level enough to “shock” your pool to help eliminate bacteria and clear up your pool. So I think the difference is the strength and how you use it. Actually, I’m not sure what the official answer is though 😊

Hi C F, you can use them together. The idea is to use enough chlorine to “shock” your pool to get the free chlorine level up high enough and for a long enough time. I suspect you didn’t use enough product. Even in colder weather the granular type will help; it’s just that you will need less product if you use the liquid type. We just released a new video that shows the concentration of the liquid shock we used last year and this year , our pool water volume and how many gallons we used last year and again this year. Maybe that will help you do the math on how much to use with your pool. We’ll link that video below and be sure to watch it through because we sprinkle some tips throughout the video. Remember that when you use a lot of shock it may be a while before you can go in and swim due to high chlorine levels and that when you backwash to be careful not to kill the grass or shrubs due to high chlorine levels.
