Hey Jill, not sure if you've experienced this, but when initially teaching targeting I've found that you should NOT use something that the horse can bite through. I tried to use a pool noodle target with a horse that had never targeted and can confirm that chasing a horse with a piece of pool noodle in their mouth is NOT fun lol! So lesson is start with something relatively solid and you can use anything once you're sure they know not to bite it :)

Hi Jill. First I want to say that, in addition to all the important information you present, you are an incredibly gifted writer and I find your blog to be not only extremely articulate and well written, but also very personal, from the heart and inspiring. So thank you for that. We recently were blessed by Rosie coming to our farm/home. She is a 15 year old paint mare pony (12.3 hands) who came from another home where she reportedly taught 3 children how to trail ride over the past 4 years. We don't know all the details about how she was trained but undoubtedly traditional vs operant conditioning. My question is this: my wife is receiving lessons on traditional ground work and wants to continue with that, but I'd like to go on a journey with Rosie using operant conditioning at liberty, including clicker training. In other words, my wife will continue with the traditional approach, which I also have been using up to now, but I want to work with Rosie by changing to clicker training so as to develop a more compassionate, heart based relationship with Rosie. Is this possible and can I do this without causing conflict and confusion for Rosie. I love your approach and the way you teach, and I hope you can shed some light on our situation. Thank you.

I’m not sure who these people are that only watch 5 mins, but I always watch the whole video. I think you should go back to the “if you watched this video to the end put *this* emoji in the comments below”. That way you can see if the analytics are correct. I feel like with this group they are not. Love your videos! Keep up the good work and thank you for showing us that there are different ways to train your horse.

I am so stoked you are doing r+. Can I suggest something for sound quality? You can download a free app called audacity and use it to clear out the background noise in your track. If you do a clap when you start recording, it’s easy to line back up your adjusted track with your video.

A few years late to the party- but wondering if having the target tucked in your waist when teaching the "manners" behaviour was confusing for the gelding. He was trying the same behaviour as the first task without success. Does the target being beside the treat pouch encourage them to reach for the pouch too?

This would have been so helpful when I tried clicker training my horse last summer! He picked up the targeting in about 2 minutes, but we could not get his manners worked out or how to show him we were done with a session so I stopped. The only thing we do with treats now is carrot stretches and I have trained him to stand still at the mounting block with treats. I’d be curious to see if/ how R+ can be translated into ridden work.

Curious what to do when that second horse shows up. If they are both clicker trained, what do you do when the second one that hasn't done what you asked expects something?

Do you ever have issues with multiple horses who know the clicker sound getting... idk antsy when they hear you working on another horse?

Can teaching a horse manners by rewarding when they turn their head away completely cause any issues or negativity for your horse in the future? My mare was extremely crazy with treats and began to even nip before so when I taught her manners I reinforced her turning her head away completely. She's great now with treat training so I'm just wondering if I should consider reinforcing manners to the center of her body instead of away from me.

Samantha Lutgendorf id switch to the less severe version bc you could miss when she gives you a calming signal. i cant remember if i touched on that in this video but i did on either the EQUINE IN THEORY podcast episode or on my blog post about it on jetequitheory.com/blog

What are the pro’s and con’s? And why do you like this training method? How will this effect riding? And how will this effect your relationship with the horse?
@JETEquiTheory
@JETEquiTheory 5 жыл бұрын
i love this training method because it makes sense to me. it’s founded in operant conditioning, and has a specific set of procedures to follow; all of which are based in science. it makes training so much more clear to me than the way i learned it growing up. i now understand traditional training better as a result of studying OC😄 cons are that it’s not universally accepted. there are still people out there who believe treats are bad & horses are looking to usurp their power. riding can be trained using clicker. i have ideas, but have yet to do it so ill keep my thoughts to myself for now! it will affect my relationship for the better i believe. ive seen a tremendous change in Zoë since i started. she really thrives on the freedom she’s allowed. she can stay with me or leave & she loves solving the puzzles! she comes up to me every time she sees me & nickers so i’d say she’s happy with the switch!

Hey Jill! Quick question. I'm an AQHA rider, but recently my horse has developed pretty severe ulcers. We're working with my vet and he's on a plethora of meds, and we are in the motion of moving to a smaller, non-show barn where he gets hay 24/7 and I can visit him more often. We're on a lunging regimine just to keep him sane until we can start back in work. But I can tell he doesn't enjoy it. Where would you recommend starting to build up the relationship and, once we're at the more laid-back place, start with +R? I think we both need a change and a step back from the show life. I hate seeing him so stressed to even go in the ring.

Hi I have a share lease horse called Harlem and I love +R. I trained her to target with a mechanical clicker as the noise, but when I wanted to teacher her to self bridle I needed to not have the clicker. Will I confuse her/take away the effect by ALSO using the mouth click? (the SSKS kind of noise?)

Prestige Pets You can have more than one bridge signal. Although I don’t recommend having any more than 2. As long as you “charge” the new sound that you are using (pairing the new sound with the reinforcer), then she will respond to it just like the clicker :) And it will not “de-value” the actual clicker. She will respond to them the same. Hope this helps:)
