A few comments: 1. You don’t need a clicker. You need any short sound that is consistent (you’ll make it the same way every time) and distinctive (you’ll never make it in any other context). I trained my cats by making a short high-pitched “boop!” noise. You can use words, but cats are not as good at understanding human languages as people are, so the specific words may not be as distinctive from all of the other words you use in your everyday life. 2. Training cats to come running to you expecting treats at a particular sound (I use “pss pss” for this) is a basic safety measure. If they get outside, or if you really need to find them ASAP because you’re late for the vet appointment, having a way to get them to come when called is super-helpful. 3. Another really important concept from operant conditioning that dog clicker trainers use that I don’t see mentioned here is “variable ratio reinforcement.” Once you get the cat very used to the idea that the sound means that they will get a treat, you can start gradually dropping it back wind *not* giving a treat every single time you make the sound. It works like a slot machine - they never know when it will pay off but it pays off often enough that they keep coming back, and you have less difficulty with satiation. The sound or the petting or the play becomes the stand-in for the treat itself. Variable ratio reinforcement is actually *more* effective than constant reinforcement.

When I got my kitten my whole family thought it was stupid that I was teaching my cat to sit. This kitty is over a year old, he knows how hard he is allowed to bite during play, he sits and waits for food instead of just taking it off my plate, he comes when I call him, and he knows what 'leave it' means. Is he perfectly obedient? NO. Cats are even more stubborn than dogs and where a well-loved dog will do anything to please their pet parent, a cat can be like a toddler, they know the rules but sometimes they just want to throw the ball in the house when mom isn't looking. Clicker training is awesome and my cat loves knowing how to communicate with me.

@@mygirldarby Yes I had pet chickens as a kid, who ignored their coop to roost in the tree it was under! every evening there was a procession as they hopped on the coop, then a low hanging branch, then hopped higher and higher to their preferred branches. And then if you got up early enough you could see them jump out of the tree with their wings spread to help them! I had growing up a piece of paper on my door, "Have you hugged a chicken today?" My brother found it in I think a magazine and cut it out and taped it there! Made me so happy. Wonderful wonderful wonderful creatures. Saw yesterday (and last week) a truck loaded (tightly) with chickens on their way to slaughter :( Clearly there's a chicken farm (an intensive one too) to the north of where I live, and then a slaughterhouse to the south........it's heartbreaking seeing it :( But yeah, I could talk for days and tell stories about my dear little chickie friends. Even my friends from growing up still remember them vividly and fondly (well, fondly for most of them! Cookie didn't like too many people 😅 He actually only liked me, I think because he associated me with his rescue...two kids were hunting him and this other rooster with BB guns, and uh we took them?? He sat on my lap - I was 9 - the entire car ride home and just seemed stunned and stared at me in shock. After the shock wore off, he decided he liked to greet people by erm having a quick fight?? He was a gorgeous fellow though, absolutely huge, I suppose a bantam but not sure his breed as I've never seen his coloring since). eeep I did it, babbled about the chickens 🙈😍🐔🥰

I really liked teaching my cat a different kind of clicker training. We did regular clicker training (mouth sounds) but then I had a different click that I used as a kind of "Marco Polo" where I'd click lighter and repeatedly. Faster and louder when she gets close to the Macguffin, and a high pitched "Nope" if she went the wrong direction. She'd start scanning left to right to get the right clicks before going. Eventually I could hide treats around the house and clicker her around to the hidden treats and loud click when she got it. She *loved* it, vibrating tails, falling on the ground for some floor cuddles.

I clicker trained my foster stray cat to get into a harness in just half a week! Getting him used to it and letting me adjust it and getting him walking and outside are all additional steps that I know will take time but I’m shocked at how easy and fast getting him into the harness was! I tried when I first got him and gave up completely in a few days, thinking it would take months of training. I’m so excited to put some outdoor fun back into his life! And I didn’t even use a clicker or high reward treats! I just make a distinct robotic sounding tee-tee sound instead, which is not something he’ll ever hear otherwise, and it works great so far. And i just use cat kibble (I learned going fully wet food for meals is better than wet dry combo, so now have no other use for the kibble anyway, and it’s healthier than treats).

Wow, the universe must have been listening. Clicker training isn't done for cats in my country, but I'd bought one anyway (sound is indeed harder, probably for a dog, but not too annoying for a cat. Edit: the one in your training sounds exactly the same). Because my boys weren't exactly bffs, I wanted to wait until there was balance at home. There is now, after almost 11 months of trying and reintroducing (so happy I never gave up; got to keep them both 🤗), so I picked it out of the toy box again & bought tiny treats I know they love with the intention to start finding training info. And then THIS! I see it as a sign it'll be good for them. If anyone has good tips on channels or books on clickertraining I'd love to know. I prefer Dutch or English, because I'm fluent in both, but I'm able to make sense of German too.

Traveler's garden has good training videos for anti-anxiety and leash training, and there is another channel called cat training school I think, for the usual clicker training stuff

@@dreamwalker2518 That's great! I am going to look up both. Thank you very much 😻.

@@misssunnydee another good cat channel is fundamentally feline (food puzzles for cats) and also billispeaks (button-augmented communication)

Sorry Dee, the channel is called "cat school", not cat training school, I just looked
@misssunnydee3 жыл бұрын
@@dreamwalker2518 I figured it out. 'Cat training' sent me there, so I already thought you probably meant that 😄. So far my cats get so focused on the treats they forget they're supposed to do sth first, but they're new to it. At least one of them jumped in my lap expecting his treat when he heard the clicker in the video 😅. Guess the link has been forged for one of them, haha. I will have a blast doing all of these things with them, it looks like an amazing channel. Thx again.

Hey Jackson, I was wondering if you could do a video on how to deal with the loss of a cat (grieving, honouring, etc.) I just lost a cat myself and I think many people would appreciate a video on that too❤️

Praise and petting is what my cat dude likes. Also treats. It's good to know how small their stomach actually is. I was afraid I wasn't feeding him enough bit I'm feeding him the perfect amount.

I have just started clicker training with my big boy. I've been daily sitting with him and getting him to understand clickeans treat. I laughed when she said call her cat to come by calling him because I actually meow at mine like he does when he's hungry and he comes running lol

I just saw the Clicker training Vid. with Samantha Bell and this is SO HELPFUL! I can't wait to start using this to help my cat come when called! Also learning how small a cat's stomach is makes better sense why my cat gets bored with his treats! Thank you again! 😍

I am super excited to clicker train. One cat is food motivated, the other snubs treats and only wants Cherrios.
@incorporealexistence3 жыл бұрын
If you have already clicker trained your cat too do simple actions, you can move to a complex routine action, such as up then down then sit then stay the roll over then click treat.

Out of skeptical interest I decided to practice the come here command with my 4-5 month old (we weren't super sure on age) but using my mouth as a clicker I got my cat to come to me about 4 times. She got a bit over stimulated and proceeded with zoomies but it goes to show clicker training works even with first timers.

Been doing sit clicker training with my cat but he's still so food obsessed that it's hard to get him to calm down for a lot of the further stuff. He does sit, mostly but only if I do with food (hasn't resonated beyond to sit on command any other time). Picture tasmanian devil any time food is around, especially something he knows. I actually spent the 1st month with him having to eat my meals standing in the middle of the kitchen bcuz he'd dive to any surface it was & steal it & get all bent out of shape cuz it's present. Still has starving kitty mindset even tho he's been well fed since I took him in.
