In Italy we call that knot Machard and Prusick is a similar one, but the sling starts to "wrap" itself from the centre.

You make it look so easy... When the weather allows it I am going to attempt this for the first time in a back yard tree. I won't be climbing more than a short distance for a while, but it looks like a good place to learn.

Nice video! If the upper prusik were slightly longer, it would be easier to ascending.

We were out practising this at the local crag yesterday. Great instructions btw and all went well until I got to the top. I couldnt progress over the top with the body prussik. For all intents I beach whaled myself hauling on the static rope to get over. Not elegant. Is there a more savvy way to topout on prussiks?

That's incredible! I prefer using my mechanical devices but this is fascinating that it can be done with cord like that!!

I feel like using this method would allow even people that would normally have issues climbing ropes ascend safely. Good skill to have.

Imo this is super involved and makes people feel top heavy. Jumars would help the average person way more

@@sylvernale I agree. But it would still be a good skill to know in an emergency situation if someone is mildly injured or couldn't normally climb a rope unassisted and needs to. Or if a lack of preparation limits the equipment on hand.

For the clove hitch backup, do you leave it where it is as you ascend? Or do you take in the rope so it's relatively close to your body and you won't fall too far if both prusiks fail?

Tomorrow will be the first time I've done this in fifty years, so well see how it goes. As I recall it, I use a line on each foot. A third line goes to my seat harness to use for resting. I make a 'stirp' from two plastic hoses (one inside the other) to keep the rope from crushing my feet. In the above video, it would be hard to bend my leg so far as to lose the leverage so using two legs I can take smaller and quicker 'steps' up the rope. I will run the lines (at least one of them) through a chest harness to keep me close to the rope. Something along those lines to push my 69 year old body up about 30 feet. Nice voice on the guy in the video, as if southern Americans could understand those Brits anyway. Enjoy.

Very nice video. I am looking for this same type video and example such as this, yet a video to Show how to utilize this method without use of climbing gear( such as emergency situation and your without your actual climbing safety gear). Teach how to in emergency with no man made harnesses Only rope

I wish this video spent more time and went slower on the building/tying prusiks part. That's a much bigger concern for me than how to ascend.

any reason to not use a longer sling or two slings for the foot loop so you could use both feet when pushing up to ascend?
@zorkan111
@zorkan111 2 жыл бұрын
You can definitely use a wider loop and use both feet, but most of the time you're climbing along a cliff, so it's useful to have a free leg to stand on the rocks where possible, or use the leg to lean against the cliff to stabilize yourself and/or prevent yourself from hitting the cliff.

I prefer to use a bachman for ascending ropes (crevasse self rescue practice mostly) because when your rope is wet/frozen and your hands are too, or you are wearing gloves, the big carabiners are really nice as handles to break the knot and move it up. Not to mention, it can be tied with only one free end in a pinch. I like a Texas prusik for my feet so I don't have to do a s#!+ ton of pistol squats the whole way up, takes a bit more prep though. Haha
@cokeforever
@cokeforever 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Bachman seems so natural as upper knot! I'm amazed at how short his upper knot (with his lengthy hands) and why the upper one is not Bachman.

Agreed. Practiced this with someone in the gym, and guy got stuck some meters up with his knots completely jammed. Took a while to get him down. Good thing it didn't happen outside though, so trying these things indoors is actually quite nice.

What do you have the hanging rope anchored to?
@gantz4u

I dunno. Most likely an anchor. They send guys up to free climb 10 feet and install a climbing bolt and an anchor. I guess you could get your buddy to do that or throw a grappling hook up there.

Am I crazy or did he do the same knot for both but just misspoke and meant to do a different knot. The first knot he ties which he called “French Prusik” looks like what I know as a klemheist knot. Then he did the same thing for the other and said “klemheist knot”.

I would distinguish between ascending a rope and aid climbing. In aid climbing you start at the bottom of a wall with all of your equipment and you do basically whatever you need to do to get to the top of the wall from there. When ascending a rope, you already have equipment set up that you are using. Ascending a rope can be part of aid climbing, e.g. you are belaying the aid leader and then you just ascend the rope to catch up or if you set a fixed line for abseiling to get supplies.

It works well until I had to sit down a bit too hard. once the kleimheist got too much pressure on it it just refuses to come lose. It's like its welded to the rope. I eventually got it lose but it took about 20 minutes to do so.

Are prusik all that safe? isn't it possible for the two small rope just lose their grip on the bigger rope and just slide down, and you with it?
@emiltjonneland721
@emiltjonneland721 4 жыл бұрын
Paul-François Bruno hence the clove hitch as a backup when you get far enough off the ground. Also the likelihood of both prussics slipping is quite low.
@seaotter52
@seaotter52 4 жыл бұрын
It is possible that the cords slip (addressed in the video) so that's why a kleimheist was used for the main load bearing and the French prusik was the foot loop. Kleimheist loads well in one direction and runs freer the other. A regular prusik can get tough to move after loading. Take care making sure you get stuff set before you put weight on the system
@jaci0077
@jaci0077 4 жыл бұрын
You're not wrong. But mechanical devices fail too. I, myself feel safer hanging from two nylon cords because when they fail they slip, so it's a gradual failure you can recover from. If a mechanical brake fails it's usually a much more sudden outcome. This is of course only my experience, and I have no problem using either.

Right. Most people just climb up the rope u just double hand it no feet no tie ins. You think im made of money? I cant afford rope harnesses and carabiners. Just do the dulfersitz rappel on the way down. boom. Im just funning with you I dont even own rope bro..I own 1 rope. I use it to pull the chainsaws up. im like free solo in the arborist world.

This is wrong. Your main prusik should be long as ur arm reach when u sif in harness. And u can use 2 "pedals" for both of legs. U can literally walk on rope.
@brandonhutchison9864
@brandonhutchison9864 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not a climber but did do a rescue course, and as you say, that is how we prusiked up a rope. One on each foot and the 3rd caribinerred to the chest harness. It was then very easy to "walk" up the rope as you say. We had a second rope in parallel as a safety
