You're going to see me work with young jumper Andrew (17 at time of making video) mostly in real-time. Hopefully in doing this you will see his progressions and in some instances hear our interaction and how he responds.
Andrew is from the US-based but actually competes for Trinidad and Tobago. He was 5th in the Commonwealth Games in 23. He has a best 100m of 10.70sec and a long jump of 7.31m. He was a hang jumper - and this technique was not effective for him. How so? Andrew was not holding his take-off nor making the most of his speed. In short he was literally falling short.
In the video - more or less filmed over one training session - you will see pretty significant changes being made - not the least that he in now a htch-kick jumper.
I still work with Andrew remotely and you may have seen in other videos that he has started to improve even more and his hitch is developing more and more.
Please note as I say in the video this is one of my Coach-Athlete ones - these are usually for paid members only on thapart of my channel. These videos are different to the ones on the main channel in that they are often a bit longer and there's more talk and explaations. Some also include training programmes - which is something that I am always asked for.
Please do consider becoming a channel member - for just £1.99/$1.99 a month you can support me make the content that's hopefully making you a better coach/athlete.

Overview of video content
Intro: 0.26sec: Video specific hitch-kick content starts:
I explain that you will and hear progressions.
Step by step progressions
Use of more bassic drills to start the session
there's a focus on arm action drills for spriting with the connection made that of you don't approach the board in the right way you won't take-off in the right way.
1.14min Andrew
Introduction to him - best 7.31m, regualar 10.70sec runner
Points about his technique - as noted earlier i.e. not holding his take-off
John-Carlo another jumper also forms part of the video - he's 21 and has similar speed and jump distance to Andrew
2.25min I explain how each unit is designed to compliment the structure of the session and make progress (hopefully) easier
2.41min: Specific session structure
2.50min: Free leg landing take-offs
There was a focus on arm separation and the take-off drive. We need to get the basics in place.
3.11min: Mat drills
A mat was placed on the third step out
3.51min I explain that the fault you are working on may be casued by issues that are not direclty related to the fault ... e.g. prior step mechanics may be affecting the take-off.
I explain how I may add and remove the mat during a session depending on what I see and what I think needs work
4.39min: Hitch-kick progressoin - first cycle
You will actually hear me talking to Andrew about this in the video
5.24min: I explain how you don't want to over coach and allow the athlete to vocalise their own thoughts.
Remember he is learning the hitch for the first time
You'll see that he regresses and goes into a hang shape sometimes. It takes time.
6.26sec: Queing the movement before the actual jump can help
6.43sec: Shoulder shrug at take-off. To do or not to do.
As a coach you need to work out what works for the particular jumper.
7.32min: Interactionn between Andrew and myself.
He talks about the landing and I clarify why he is getting problems with extension into the sand.
I further clarify using another of jumper's technique - Leigh.
9.10: Further improvements being made
9.30: Thoughts on further work needed and a couple of jumps from a future session where Andrew has moved further on technically.
Clips of Andrew from the 2nd and 3rd sessions we did - where he is jumping from a longer approach and hitting pretty good positions.
10.15min: Summing up

How do you teach the kids how far they have to be on their run up to the board?

Get them to sprint back toward you but they must not slow as they pass you. So tell them to run 10m past you. When they slow that will give you the point at where to start developing a run-up. Up to about 15-16 you can use the number of years of age as the number of steps to use. Hope that helps. You’ll have to work out the take-off leg and the start leg.
