The reason to use coarsely ground coffee for cold brew is not because it will or will not clog up your filter! I've heard this several time now. There are other ways to make cold brew where you can just use a regular filter and you'd still want to use coarse coffee. The main reason is because of how it affects the taste. Otherwise great instructions - straight to the point!

I've been using a Toddy for well over 40 years. Mine doesn't even have a handle. I broke the carafe long ago, so I use a pitcher to drain it. Since I'm the only coffee drinker, I freeze about half the brew and keep the rest in a jar in the fridge. I will do a second brewing over the grounds, using one coffee-can full of water instead of 2 like the first one. I like French Market brand coffee with chicory, and just today, I tried it (2 TBS.) for butter coffee.
@Joannakathryn2 жыл бұрын
@@OnlyCoMpleXCS It tastes the same, except I use 2 TBS. for the first brew per cup and 3 TBS. for the second one. You can always add more if you like it stronger.

How often should I replace my filter?
@AlternativeBrewing4 жыл бұрын
As often as necessary. you'll notice it getting blacker, clogged up with fine grinds and coffee dust over-time. You can boil them to keep them cleaner for longer, but you'll eventually see that it will be very slow to filter the coffee out and this is a good time to replace it.
@jerkywez19835 күн бұрын
I pulled mine out which was over 10 years old and used a new replacement filter which was 10 years old (never used) and it drained through within 10minutes so I’m guessing the filters need replacing? I made sure the filter was placed correctly at bottom..

Seems cool. Genuine question though: what's the benefit of using a Toddy cold brew system, when I can just brew a regular pot of coffee and put it in the fridge?
@AlternativeBrewing4 ай бұрын
Not much I guess other than it is a system set up uniquely for cold brewing. It has a capacity of 2L and filters designed for getting all the grounds separated.

Yes. The main one is the fabric filter - but you can also use a paper one too to place the grounds in.

Why shouldnt you stir?
@AlternativeBrewing3 жыл бұрын
You can unsettle the filter in the base, or with stirring you have the grounds swelling up and settling directly in the middle on top of the filter that will results in it blocking up when it comes time to emptying it.
@stooge816 ай бұрын
Best remedy for this is using a disposable or reusable mesh bag. The new Toddy's come with both a few of those and a silicone lid for the top.

Stupid question, are the 200grams weighted in whole bean or ground?
@SpaneenOomlong3 жыл бұрын
Correct.
@AlternativeBrewing3 жыл бұрын
You want to place 200g of ground coffee in the Toddy.
@EdmondOliverLives2 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old comment, but I thought I should let you know anyways. Weight (200 grams) is not effected by if it is ground or not. Only volume would be effected, which is how much space the coffee takes up in the container. 200 grams of unground coffee will also weigh 200 grams once ground. I hope I don't sound rude or anything, I just wanted to give you an answer. It's not a stupid question at all.

Is 200 grams of coffee your using equivalent to the 12 oz bag of coffee recommended by Toddy? I've tried this a few times and can't seem to get the ratios right.
@AlternativeBrewing5 жыл бұрын
it's relatively close yes. 12oz is 340g - but if you work off a ratio of 1:10 then your cold brew should be tasty! so 200g coffee to 2L water. I'm using grams to millilitres.
@pjcondon4664 жыл бұрын
From Toddy, "For the best flavor, start with 12 ounces (340 g) of coarsely ground coffee and 7 cups (56 fl. oz./1.65 L) of filtered water by volume."
@saifulbahrimahfuz2 жыл бұрын
@@pjcondon466 i use this ratio. Basically 200g for 1 litre of water, room temp for up to 24 hours. Got the best coffee concentrated. Stored in the fridge for up to 3 weeks. Diluted 1:2 part of water or milk. It taste better than commercially sell cold brew coffee.
