How to Collect Spores from Lion's Mane Mushrooms

Lion's mane mushroom has white spores which start dropping when the tendrils elongate. The spores are hard to see until there is a massive amount of them on the foil.
I took advantage of the experiment I was running which was growing lions mane in a grow tent with no electricity, so there was no added humidity or air currents to disrupt the spore deposit.
I harvested 27 spore prints which I can use to start fresh cultures of lions mane whenever I want for many years. This method was fun and easy. If the fruit becomes so big that the foil doesn't fit under, I use some makeshift risers to raise the block up.

How do you store the spores? Do they have to be kept in the fridge or anything? How many times can you use one of those packets, like how many agar plates could one do? Aside from using agar, how else can the spores be used?

In the plastic bag in a drawer, cool room no light. Should last decades. 1 spore print packet can make thousands of agar plate cultures.

@@James-nader It is possible there will be slight contamination. The spores can be cleaned up on water agar or normal agar easily. I didn’t have any air currents or humidity system running so the spore prints are dry enough to where they are mostly clean as they can get.

I think using the castellani method of fungal preservation is far better than using spore prints. For one, spores and spore prints are susceptible to huge amounts of genetic variation, which can and usually does harm yield, whereas using agar or liquid cultures can allow you to isolate one single set of genetics that can be very high yielding. The thought process is that spore prints can be stored longer, but this isn’t actually the case if you use the castellani method on a wedge of agar.
