Your videos helped me passed my driving test last year before the major start of the pandemic. It's great to revisit and relearn the basics to become a smart driver. Unfortunately many, but not everybody still partially stop then go. I've even see people blatantly drive even tho there's a stop line/sign. Actually, 3 seconds is not a time reference but rather the time AFTER stopping to look for pedestrians, vehicles, service vehicles, obstructions, motorcycles, etc. The human eye is horrid as to evaluation of speeding vehicles. By giving time for the brain to look and detect movement a safer stop is achieved. Start the clock at Stop: look in direction of travel, look in direction of approaching vehicles, look for pedestrians, bike riders, construction, etc. All takes at least three seconds. IF there are X number of stop signs in your route, X times 3 seconds is the time it takes to be safe. Pedestrians get hit everyday by the hundreds because of lack of looking by drivers. Thanks.

Awesome, thanks Rick! I get my students to practice slowing down and coming to a complete stop and, as they do that I ask them to feel that slight kickback in their seat. When they feel that, they know they've stopped completely. Then before they proceed again, I get them to count "1...2...", and if it's safe, "Go". Or instead of counting, I just get them to scan the intersection "Left, center, right". That's about 2 seconds. If they do hard stops, I put my coffee on the dashboard and tell them to try not to spill it, lol! I never really take my hand off the cup though! :-)

You should ALWAYS bring the car to a COMPLETE stop. Not only during the test. The reason there is a stop sign, in many cases, means there are traffic coming from various directions that you cannot clearly see until you hit the stop line, sometimes you have to go beyond the stop line to see clearly. No way that you can know for sure it’s clear to proceed unless you make that stop. Also, in case there are traffic, your feet on the break is 10 times better than your feet on the gas ready to roll. If you panic, you hit the break and never move rather than you hit the gas and cause an accident. Lastly, as a defensive driver, you should never assume others intentions even for a four-way STOP. There are far too often cases where the other driver didn’t stop properly. If you don’t come to a complete stop, there is no time for you to observe and act.

Great video! But one thing I often see people miss is where to stop. A lot of drivers in my area stop in the middle of the cross walk - a behavior which many a comedian has made their salt on. I've even witnessed drivers come to a complete stop with their rear wheels on the far line of the crosswalk - essentially stopping in the middle of the intersection. I suppose it might vary by State/Province but where I am, almost all stop signs have balk lines. And the law here is you should stop with your front bumper over the balk line. As for timing, I find if I focus on [almost] nothing except where I come to a complete stop. Then look around for other drivers that arrived before me. That's plenty of time. By the way, there's also a serious problem around here of folks not knowing how to wait their turn. I tend to assume they also flunked kindergarten.

problem is I keep hearing different stories in Oklahoma now there saying at some of the driving schools three one thousand count down is now not even a long enough count ..talk about surprising there always changing the guidelines on these tests .everything we were taught growing up driving is now different lol for those renewing a license be aware of that so you can save yourself the extra bucks !,they wont tell you this stuff always til after you've spent the testing fee and paid them ..that's hiw they nake there money 💰

Yup now i know that the examiner I had was full of BS when he said I didn't stop at a stop sign for 3 seconds. The only part of the drivers license test I can blame on me was the parallel parking. But other then that the rest of the test was complete bs from the examiner and ended up giving me 280 points 🤬. If I get the same examiner again he's getting a few nice words after i pass the test thanks too your videos.

Rick, I believe the "three-second stop" originated from making sure the driver looked LEFT-RIGHT-LEFT, scanning for approaching traffic before proceeding. If a car is coming at you at a good clip, three-seconds might not be too long of a time, if you visually catch it and prevent a collision-the purpose of this stopping and looking business.

I live in Switzerland went to Driving School there. Had to Parrelel Park & Reverse back into a Space Drove out in the Country Down a Mountain Road into a City & Then Tored the End of My Driving Test I Approached an Intersection with a Stop Sign I did come to a Complete Stop longer than i should have since i was really Focused to Ensure that i had come to a Complete Stop wich is a Must. Thereafter i got on the Highway & the Examiner had me drive back to the Town where the DMV was. Past on the 1st Try🚘🚘🚘🚘.
