Helpful! I have a concert coming up with a lot of ‘folky’ songs in which I hear no piano! Thank you for the tips and I have subscribed. 😊

Sometimes I go for open voicing arpeggios root position in quasi ostinoto but with all the dynamics i can muster up. Kinda floating feel with some ambiguousness to it. And melodica is always a hit.

In American folk music (e.g . Peter paul and mary) the piano is either melodic countermelody or more often chord in counterythym to the strings. Anything by raffi will call for octave hammers as with stride. Chords will be open chords on guitar - the 1 and 2 chords in third inversion, 3, 4, 5, and 5 ( add 7) are in root inversion, the 6 chord is root position as a triad, and the 7 chord is in root position. American folk will also make heavy use of classical jazz devices in a deceivingly simple fashion and heavy use of chord inversions. There will be heavy use of add7 chords but not to the degree seen with blues. Blues tones may or may not be used (3b, 6b, and 7b). Rather the style hes talking about here is bluegrass and its varriants.
