Clarification: the word "comping" is not really short for "complimenting". It's short for "accompanying" and that's basically what you're doing when your "comping", because you're not playing the lead melody: you're accompanying it. (Years ago I heard someone [I think it was a drummer] saying that it came from "complementing" and I hear now many musicians repeating that.) Just a small contribution. And thank you for the videos: they're short but give the essence of what you need to know.

Great videos, I love your dry sense of humour. The only tip I would add is that rythm is key as well and should be focused on when comping as much, or even more than chords in my opinion. To me the key to is to strike the right key at the right moment. Rythm for jazz comping is not the same as Country or Pop rythm. In jazz comping you frequently play on offbeats not so much in other styles. You mention punctuation and it would be interesting that you delve a bit more into this question. You did this for reggae and it would be worth doing the same for the other styles. Keep the good videos coming!

Hey Michael Thanks! You covered a lot of material in a short time and made it generalized theory. Thats a breath of fresh air from other videos! I dont want to learn a song I want to apply things like your comments about using 9 & 13 over major chords. Very nice Peace and hope things are well for you!

Thank you, that's what I needed. My chords are right but don't sound right. That's hell of a trauma when you never attended a formal school and studying on your own at nights makes you think you are an unexpectedly excellent underdog except that you're not. :D

Hey Michael, you're awesome. This particular video reminded me back in the day when I was a piano major in my jazz training. You should make a longer video content on Latin jazz, jazz and afro Cuban music

Nice vid, Michael. As I've always understood it, though, the term "comping" comes from the shortening of "accompanying," (a supporting musician is usually referred to as an accompanist, not a "complementer"), "but I guess "complementing" works just as well. Potato, potahto.

I just think of them as 251s descending by a a semitone from the key of B (Dbmin7 Gb7) to the key of Bb (Cmin7 F7)
@perrosaurio7254 жыл бұрын
ITs when a dominant chord becomes a minor before resolving (i think you would say it that way on english). C7 - cm7 - F7 or in this case Gb7 (subv7 of C7) - Cm7 - F7. It would be equally good if you play Gb7 Gbm7 F7. Jazz is good. Very good.

Thank you again Michael. My question on blues concerning cadential voicings 4-5-1s pertain to the smoothness or roughness in voice leading between similar and parallel motions. Comparing the figured bass can point this out IV-V-I, ii-V-I and ii6-V-I in major or minor. This pertains to the retrograde 5-4-1 in the last 4 bars in blues form that share no common tones. I hope this is clear, you have a give for explaining and theorizing.

ChokDK Danmark Take the time to transpose to C if you need, writing the notes will help. I also like tutorials to be in C because it's easier to understand, but I find that many are not, so I got used to transposing to C when I learn (then later I practice in other keys, it's weird but it works for me)
