It would be truly helpful to have a real paraplegic in your tutorials. There is a completely different dynamic that nothing else can compare to.

Real‽ Are there fake paraplegics going around and making KZbin videos? Sorry, I had to laugh! No disrespect. T his is the most useful video for me just now.

@@DaveSpathaky I appreciate your opinion and comment. Just in my opinion, when I first became a complete, T-10 to 12 paraplegic, I watched a few videos that almost got me hurt. Take care.

@@TURTLEORIGINAL hi, and I understand but I feel we all must take responsibility for ourselves. If I fall on the floor I don’t think I can blame a video. “The video made me do it” won’t stand up as a defence in court. I hear you: there is bad advice out there. I happen to think this is sound. I like to do things slow and on my own so I don’t feel rushed. I live alone so that’s easy enough. Carers come in and help me for stuff I need help with. I have a fall alarm. Vital kit in my book. What’s your setup?

@@tdf2972 I have my left leg but not the foot. I learned to use the transfer board right after the surgery. I could not use left foot for fear of ripping stitches. After building arm strength I could transfer just fine. I think i was motivated by not wanting the nurses to see me poop.

Lindsay, these are great informational videos. A lot is taken for granted by the general public. A lot is appreciated if you are a caregiver, a patient or impaired. Very few instructions however include how to remove or manipulate the lower body dressing when maneuvering from a wheelchair to the toilet/commode either independently or with the help of a caregiver. The same for transfers in general to a commode/toilet for those with balance, dexterity and strength concerns. ReleaSe Pajamas is the solution to the issue of the lower body dressing manipulation. Not a cheap plug but no other way on contacting EquipmeOT. Look forward to your reply to provide more info on this product.

Quick question, how about slide board transfers from manual wheelchair stair lift with dycem grip in place on stair lift seat and one arm flipped up (I worry too high risk despite chair swivelling given the stairs in too close proximity, but otherwise the client will remain on upper level of home primarily). My client can safely do so with Ax1 from wheelchair hospital bed and toilet with drop arm commode in place, and is working with PT as he is not at his baseline. . What is your opinion? Thanks!

Thanks so much for these videos!! :) Should the set up angle between the wheel on the wheelchair and the toilet as well as the bedside commode always be at a 45 degree angle-would either be the same angle? Or is that just the „ideal“ angle if possible? Also, would you always usually recommend a raised toilet seat vs standard toilet seat if going to the bathroom itself? Thanks so much!!
@EquipMeOT
@EquipMeOT 3 жыл бұрын
45 degrees is the recommended angle but many will approach and position differently if they have different space allowance. I like to keep the height of the toilet and height of the wheelchair as close to even as possible. A padded drop arm commode over the toilet works great too because you can adjust the height of the commode to make it perfectly level!

Undress on the bed, then use baby powder to assist sliding on the board -easier than trying to undress on a toilet

you raised your own leg to get that tranfer board from underneath you once you got back into your chair... thats cheating.

The Problem with your transfer is not only the "Wheelchair Angle" to the toilet but it's that the Bathroom is not "Handicap Accessible" or in Plain English to Small a Bathroom. It reminds me of a Regular Toilet Stall in Macy's converted to a So called "Handicap" by putting bars on the side. The tub also "Sucks".

So, I’d like to clarify that this ugly bathroom is actually the real main bathroom at my house. I shoot all my content in real homes because the likelihood that someone searching for this info has an accessible bathroom is very unlikely.

My suggestion would be to consider a slide board with a sliding seat. It will likely save a lot of energy if he has enough core strength to maintain his balance. I like this one a lot: amzn.to/3BKhbia
@EquipMeOT
@EquipMeOT Жыл бұрын
I would also suggest using a bariatric commode to transfer on and off of for toileting using the slide board because you can set it up so that he’s always transferring towards his non-broken hip. Just drop the arm rest down and set up the slide board and wheelchair to the non-injured side and switch for going back.

@@EquipMeOT This was linked from a Bariatric Transfers CEU course. In my 34 years as an OTA/L, I have had plenty of folks who roll for staff to dress them and do transfer bedw/c with a board insist on trying this. W/C hospital bed permits a gravity-assisted slide for both phases. For toileting, one way is always going to be against gravity. NEVER have I had anyone as tiny as the woman in this video. Never has anyone disrobed sufficiently. Never has proper perineal care been possible. Never have we not had to go back to bed and change into clean clothes. That is IF we have gone that far. The vast majority of the time, even the patient realizes quickly what a trainwreck we are headed toward in the trial and training efforts and we never get to the whole megillah. How this linked from a Bariatric page is a mystery to me. I was hoping for something different, new, and useful. Not the fault of this site, but this is irrelevant.
