Can't avoid recollecting those sublime musical landscapes of Claude Debussy: «floating imobility» aroused by 3rds enchainements; a sound caleydoscope. These lesson are a priceless contribution to understand how jazz harmonies can be created. Can't thank you more. Congrats and keep up the good work.

I've been using the descending version for years but I embarrassingly never realized how beautiful it sounds ascending. The descending one is essentially a VIm9 IVmaj9 progression modulating in 4ths. So it gets a shade darker every two chords. The ascending version, is IVmaj9 VIm7 conversely moving in 5ths, getting a shade brighter at a time. I love these chord voicings, BTW.

The Kenny Barron voicings are very useful, thanks for introducing them. I used this technique, trying to put together an own composition, in the refrain climbing chromatically from Fmaj9-Emaj9(#11), and so forth, ending at Cm9. It’s still rather tricky to write something outside the key of C, or Cm. But it’s getting easier to just improvise

Julian, your videos are always clear but this one in particular is beautifully concise. Thank you for creating these highly informative tutorials. I'm a guitarist first, but my piano playing has improved immensely from watching your content. What I enjoy most about your tutorials is the musical application that I hear. Theory/Techniques are all well and good but applying them to making music has to be the ultimate goal. Clearly you subscribe to that view ;)

This is very cool. Thank you. Isn't another way to think of those voicings a stack of 5ths in the left, with a stack of 5ths in the right, with both stacks either a minor or major 2nd apart (for minor or major chord respectively)? Maybe you mentioned this already. Probably easier to mentally construct it this way on the fly. Another neat voicing is to make the major chords with a root, 2, 3, 7 stack (2,3,7 in right hand), and the minor chord a root, 3, 4, 7 (relative to the root of each of the major or minor chords).

I think I've answered my own question. The formula Julian describes at the start ONLY works when ASCENDING in a key. So if you play a Cm, you advance a minor third BUT play a an EbMaj. However, when you want to descend in that same key, you have to REVERSE the formula. For example, to descend from Cm, you go down a Maj 3rd, not a minor, in order to play the AbMaj. One formula ASCENDING, the opposite formula DESCENDING, IF you want to duplicate the same quality of the chord in both directions.
