Listen listen listen x100+ The more you have knowledge and underetanding of pitch you can go anywhere even beyond .. But first you need a lot of time to discover in side the box to find the way out...Without knowledge you will be lost...thats the idea. My personal recommendation: although you can make a same song in any scale and still it might soung some how good in some way you can compose it will not give a exact feeling of the lyrics and meaning..Because that is why a great composer chooses wisely a specific mode/raga/makam/scale of notes based on the lyrics and based on that idea he manages to go out of scale and even completely out of standard scales..just like using microtonality in Arab music and indian gamakas its all based on how they talk and the idea changes because of the cource of the emotion one wants to bring..
